How about going to Sardinia?

The region is one of the most visited by tourists and is also one of the most beloved! It attracts tourists, mainly, for its cinematographic beaches and its ancient culture, maintained until today. Sardinia is the second largest Italian island (after Sicily) and enchants even the most “tough” tourists. The island offers us beauties, history, monuments and splendid buildings, in addition to the famous Nuraghe. Today we are going to discover Sardinia on an itinerary designed for lovers of two wheels!

Our Introduction

Those who are passionate about motorcycles know as much as Valentino Rossi how to deal with the “beauty” they have in their hands, but it never hurts to remember some information and do a brief review of everything before leaving.

Top priority: wear proper clothing and equipment, especially if traveling during the coldest times of the year. It is also important to remember that the IDP is mandatory and you must have specified your authorization to ride motorcycles!

Another important point:

When closing the deal, check the motorcycle insurance clauses. Make sure the motorcycle is insured against theft, accident, fire, natural disasters, etc. Also find out about parking for motorcycles at the hotel where you are staying: some hotels have their own parking spaces, others do not. If your hotel is located in a ZTL, confirm that the hotel has informed the authorities of the license plate number of the motorcycle you rented, as motorcycle traffic is also prohibited in certain places, ok? Be sure to check that the bike is in perfect condition. The roads are very well maintained, but there are some stretches, especially in smaller cities, where they are not in perfect condition, so: be extra careful!

A little about our itinerary

Let’s go! We start our tour, of course, from the mainland. As we said, Sardinia is an island and, therefore, there is no other way to get there if not through the famous ‘traghetti’, ships, or by plane (you can arrive at the airport in Olbia or Cagliari). If you want to rent a motorcycle and come with it from the mainland, you can use Moby or Grimaldi ships.

Departures with Moby are from Genova (Liguria), Civitavecchia (Lazio), Piombino or Livorno (Tuscany) and reach Olbia and Porto Torres.

With Grimaldi, departures are from Livorno (Tuscany), Civitavecchia (Lazio), Napoli (Campania) and Palermo (Sicily), arriving at Olbia, Porto Torres, Cagliari and Arbatax.

Location

Olbia and Porto Torre are in the far north of Sardinia, while Cagliari is in the far south and Arbatax is in the east, in the ‘centre’ of the island’s coast.

Should I buy the ticket in advance?
  • If you travel during peak season, yes! Pay attention to the timetables. A good option is to travel at night so you can arrive in the morning and enjoy the day.

1) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: OLBIA AND LA PELOSA

For our itinerary, I suggest you choose to enter via Olbia.

On the first day, we start our tour heading to one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia: La Pelosa, in the province of Sassari. Located in Stintino, in a magnificent region, it offers us several natural attractions. Do you want an amazing photo? Be sure to visit the Tower, which is a magnificent setting.

We continue our journey and go down the island. You can go down following the coast, which will extend your path a little, or through the interior, which leaves nothing to be desired and also presents us with breathtaking landscapes.

2) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: CHIA

Let’s go now to Chia. I know that, when looking at the map of Sardinia, you might think that it is something far and unreachable, but the trip takes about 3 hours, that is, it is possible to do two or three sections a day, ok? Of course, it will depend on your mood. If you’re, tired: don’t drive! Rest and go when you are ready.

Well, Chia is a very charming little town located on the west coast of Sardinia. This area is, without a doubt, one of the areas with the most beautiful roads on the island.

To get from La Pelosa to Chia, I suggest you head inland, via the E25 highway. But, as I said earlier, you can also choose to follow the coast, although the route will be longer.

3) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: VILLASIMIUS

After a good night’s sleep, we head to Villasimius, our first stop on the east coast. After a brief visit to the city, which is small and can be visited in a few hours, we head to the famous Cagliari, which is the capital of the region and, without a doubt, deserves a slightly longer stop – around two days.

4) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: CAGLIARI

Cagliari offers us the ‘best of both worlds’: mountains and beaches, as well as museums, monuments, a rich architecture and a lot of culture! It is an incredible city, and it offers us an excellent tourist structure, with great hotels and fantastic restaurants.

5) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: PROVINCE OF NUORO

After our strategic visit to the capital, we head to the Province of Nuoro. There you will find cities like Tortoli, Lanusei, Bari Sardo among others. The big advantage is that they are small towns and can be visited in a single day. Continuing your journey, I suggest you visit the beautiful Santa Maria Navarrese and, from there, make sure you head to the Gulf of Orosei.

6) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: GULF OF OROSEI

Well, this is one of the most famous destinations in Sardinia, so it’s likely that if you’re traveling during peak season, you’ll find a huge influx of people. The Gulf of Orosei is a true natural gem!

A boat trip there is almost mandatory, such beauty of the beaches that the locality offers us. Several of the beaches in Sardinia that we saw in splendid photos around: they are from here! That’s because the Gulf is about 33 km long and this is where, for example, the magnificent Supramonte is located, a huge cliff 40 meters high that offers us a unique view! Also remember that it is in this area that you will find the beautiful Cala Luna and Cala Goloritzé, two of the most famous in all of Italy. This region can also be visited leisurely, so I suggest you take two or three days to make the most of your time here.

7) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: SAN TEODORO

After a well-deserved visit, head to San Teodoro, using the SS125 highway, also known as the Orientale Sarda. Through this road, magic is guaranteed! You can see pastures, small ‘hidden’ towns and indescribable beauties. San Teodoro is, in fact, a real gem and, once there, you will understand everything.

Leaving San Teodoro behind, we head to another very famous and uniquely beautiful location: La Maddalena.

Gold Tip:

  • Take a boat ride there! It’s a UNIQUE experience! How about taking a 7-hour boat tour through the Maddalena Archipelago? Click here to learn more!
  • Take a day or two to enjoy the region’s beaches! It is difficult to even suggest just one beach for you, as they are all true paradises!

8) Motorcycle itinerary through Sardinia: PORTO CERVO

After enjoying your days there, head to Porto Cervo, another unmissable location! Porto Cervo is just an hour from San Teodoro and is a city known for its glamour! Here you can find VIPs during the summer, which are divided between yachts, luxury homes and expensive restaurants, but don’t be alarmed: there are excellent places where you can eat well and have fun at affordable prices.

If you travel during high season, I suggest you make your reservations in advance, especially in terms of hotels. Accommodation is not cheap, so if you don’t want to spend a lot, opt for just spending the day in the city, it’s enough.

And, from Porto Cervo, we continue to finish our motorcycle trip through Sardinia, from the same point where we started: Olbia.
