Introduction

Syracuse was founded in 730 BC. “Leaning on” the sea, the city seems to reverence the waters in a veiled way. Its monuments, its history, its culture are something that make this city even more special, unique and unforgettable. The city has excellent connections with nearby cities across the sea and through its rail network. Syracuse’s central railway station is a 20-minute walk from the center, making it very easy to stay in that region. Find out more about the Region of Sicily by Clicking Here!

1) Where to stay in Syracuse ? IN THE HISTORICAL CENTER

In fact, it is one of the most visited regions, of course, mainly due to its enormous cultural value. The historic center of the city is on the small island that joins the continent called Ortigia.

2) Where to stay in Syracuse?  AT THE CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION

Speaking of railway station, another region with good options to stay is between the Central Railway Station and the entrance to Ortigia. There are several excellent hotels around here and it makes getting around easier both ways, since you are literally ‘halfway’ both on one side and the other.

The city is very well structured and the tourist finds a huge variety of restaurants, bars, shops and hotels in all its areas. It is a calm, safe city with no great uphill and downhill stretches, which makes very peaceful and charming walks easier.

3) Where to stay in Syracuse? N THE SHORE OF SYRACUSE

It is also possible to opt for a hotel on the edge of Siracusa. If you like the beach and would like to stay in hotels facing the sea, the best region is undoubtedly in the peninsular part of the city. The Ortigia part also offers some options for hotels by the sea, but due to its great location, it may cost a little more.

What is the bests atractions in Syracuse?

Now let’s get to know some of the attractions in Syracuse.

Duomo di Siracusa (Cathedral of Syracuse)

In the historic center it is possible to visit points such as the beautiful Duomo di Siracusa (Cathedral of Syracuse). The Cathedral is a temple with a mixture of inheritances from various peoples such as the Greeks, Byzantines, Islamists and Christians. The Cathedral is in the highest part of Ortigia and its architectural influence is very varied.
It is possible to observe Ionic, Doric, Gothic and even Baroque influences. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of Holy Mary is an impressive building, of an almost indescribable beauty. Inside the Cathedral, the decoration, its columns and its works enchant our eyes!

Pupi Museum

Still nearby, it is possible to visit the Pupi Museum. The museum houses the entire artistic heritage of the Vaccaro-Mauceri family, a historic family that produced puppets. There, still active, there is also a theater, where there is a performance with the dolls that seem to come to life! The theater is also part of UNESCO’s list of Oral and Intangible Heritage. It’s fantastic! A souvenir tip: a small puppet, an item so characteristic of this incredible place!

Maniace Castle

Nearby we can also visit the Maniace Castle, which is at the end of the island of Ortigia, near the Great Port of Syracuse. The original plan was made in 1038 by the Byzantine general Giorgio Maniace after the defeat of the Arabs. However, his triumph was short-lived, as was his reconquest! After the retaking of the city, the Arabs were defeated by the Normans. In 1232, Frederick II of Swabia consolidated the structure of this fortress, which has a consolidated history between the 13th and 19th centuries, when he was instrumental in writing the history of the ancient Kingdoms of Naples and the Two Sicilies.

The Castle always had a defensive function, until the end of the wars. When we talk about architecture, this beautiful castle ‘breaks away’ from the Baroque style and surrenders to the medieval era. Nowadays it has become a cultural center and is where several presentations, events and festivals take place, mainly in the high season. In all that region there are great accommodation options, although they are not so cheap, mainly due to its privileged location, the accommodation offers there should not be disregarded, as it is, indeed, an excellent place!

Neapolis Archaeological Park

On the peninsular side of the city, opposite the station, to the north, is the Neapolis Archaeological Park. The park is one of the largest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean and houses artifacts ranging from the Bronze Age to the era of Norman domination. It was opened in the 1950s with the aim of protecting the countless monuments discovered there from the first half of the 19th century.

Greek Theater

A sure choice by the Superintendence of Eastern Sicily that created an excellent solution to two problems: how to protect flora and fauna? And how to protect historical heritage? Let’s make a park! In other words: this is how an open-air museum and a green lung were born in the impressive Greek Theater, the visit to the Archaeological Park of Neapolis is an extraordinary opportunity to get to know better, also, some Sicilian natural beauty!

Characteristic of the Mediterranean, and present in the park, are olive trees, cypresses, pines, palms, carob trees, pomegranate trees, orange trees, lemon trees, as well as myrtle and oregano, which are an invaluable treasure for Sicily and, of course, for Italy ! Staying in this region can be a great choice, as it is close to the train station, which makes it easy to travel to other cities if you want to make Syracuse your base city for visiting Sicily.
