Emigration to northern Italy began in the 13th century and Jews increased significantly in 1492, when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel of Spain, rulers of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, exiled southern Jews for refusing to convert to Christianity. At the time of the Spanish Inquisition, Jews began to “ascend” to Rome and other regions in Central and Northern Italy such as Milan, Turin, Genoa, Florence and Venice. The Jewish population reached 50,000 in the 17th century, and from World War II onwards, the Jewish population underwent great declines. Below is a list of the main synagogues across Italy.

  • La Sinagoga di Firenze – built in 1882, it is still open to the public and is one of the most beautiful.
  • Address: Via Farini 4, 50121 – Florence.
