The city is home to the University of Perugia for foreigners, and is a multi-ethnic center, where various cultures come together. Perugia is found from the highway, since the city is located on a hill, extending along its star-shaped slopes.

A little more about Perugia

The ancient origins of the municipality of Perugia can be seen by its “old-city” aspect, with outlines made by the Etruscan walls, visible by long stretches in which you can find the Arch of Augustus, whose construction dates from 25 years before Christ. Within the city, there are five districts of medieval origin, connected to the largest number of gates. In its exterior, the city has developed in a modern way, gaining with precision the characteristic star shape.

A city of hills and steps, it is helped by the presence of escalators and a Mini Metro – the famous Perugia subway. The municipality is rich in artistic attractions not only externally, as there are a lot of surprises hidden underground.

Medieval District

From Porta Marzia, in fact, you can visit a real, underground medieval disctrict, maintained under the now lost Rocca Paolina, which was built by the papacy that evacuated an entire neighborhood in the city. The old city is partly surrounded by Etruscan walls and partly by medieval walls: on the outside, the Middle Ages, it remained untouched for several kilometers and along the route there are several doors, such as the Cassero di Porta Sant’Angelo. Further inland, there is a true Etruscan city built of large stones. The city, unfortunately, displays only a few ruins. The remaining urban core is largely medieval. Thus, the old city, in fact, is a royal medieval village, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy.

1) What to visit in Perugia in one day? VISIT PIAZZA GRANDE

The visit of Perugia sees its peak in Piazza IV Novembre – a popular square, also known as Piazza Grande, the monumental center of the city of Perugia. In the center of the square are the Palazzo dei Priori (Priori Palace), the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence and the beautiful Fontana Maggiore (Maggiore Fountain), built by architects and sculptors Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. Palazzo dei Priori has a Gothic style with imposing 14th century portal and staircase, it was built to be the seat of the city now housing the city hall offices.

2) What to visit in Perugia in one day? VISIT SALA DEI NOTARI

Be sure to visit Sala dei Notari (“Notaries’ Hall”), originally a court decorated with frescoes from the 14th century and now a destination for tourists from all over the world. The portal from which it is accessed is dominated by two large bronze statues, symbols of Perugia: Leone guelph and Grifo perugino. Finally, on the third floor of the building, you can visit the National Gallery of Umbria, home to the largest collection of paintings in the region. In fact, there are, in its forty rooms, works ranging from the 13th to the 20th century, including the most prestigious works: Altarpiece of St Anthony of Piero della Francesca, Altarpiece of St Dominic by Fra Angelico, Altarpiece of Santa Maria dei Fossi by Pinturicchio and sculpture in the fountain by Arnolfo di Cambio.

3) What to visit in Perugia in one day? VISIT ROCCA PAOLINA

In the old town there are many monuments to visit. Going north, you’ll get to know the etruscan Arch of Augustus; return to the streets of Italy and then, thanks to the escalator, you can visit Rocca Paolina, that represents the remains of the fortress built by Pope Paul III in 1540. Rocca Paolina was a symbol of the Pope until 1860, but the most fascinating part of what remains of the fortress is undoubtedly toured from the basement, where you can walk freely or move around the escalator, inserted in the 80’s, connecting Piazza Partisans (Partisans Square) to Piazza Italia (“Italy Square”).

4) What to visit in Perugia in one day? VISIT THE BASILICA OF SAINT DOMINIC AND THE CHURCH OF SAINT PETER

All around the town square unfolds between the streets and religious buildings of importance, for example, the Basilica of Saint Dominic and Church of Saint Peter, with the adjacent convent.

Get to know the city’s events

In fact, Perugia hosts two events of great importance each year and this is the opportunity to arrange a visit to the city and participate in a European event. Umbria Jazz, in July, and Eurochocolate, in October, attract thousands of tourists every year who love music and the delicious and legendary food of the gods. Between a concert and a food stand, there is a whole city to discover, and at night you can choose to have dinner in one of the restaurants that offer regional cuisine menus. How to get to Perugia?

Being one of the most geographically centralized Italian peninsulas, Perugia is very well connected with all the main cities in Italy.

1) How to get to Perugia? BY AIRPLANE

Sant’egidio Airport is 12 km away from the city of Perugia, where there are buses that leave from Italy Square. The airport has free parking and you can rent cars from major national companies. Perugia Airport is connected with: Rome, Milan (Malpensa), London (Stansted), Barcelona.

2) How to get to Perugia? BY TRAIN

There are two different ways to get to Perugia by train. From Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina (both served by high-speed trains), you can take a train in an interregional direction by changing Foligno for Perugia, reaching it in about two and a half hours. From Santa Maria Novella (served by high-speed trains), you can take a direct train to Perugia or Foligno. Alternatively, it is possible to take a train to Rome or Naples making a change from Terontola to Perugia. Both solutions require at least two and a half hours of travel.
