One of the most isolated and beautiful places in Italy, Selinunte is the largest European archaeological park. The Park is in the Province of Trapani. Introduction
It is said that the ancient city of Selinus in Sicily, today Selinunte, was founded in 651 BC by the Greeks. For 200 years, the city developed and caused envy in neighboring Segesta, which declared war on Selinunte. In short: 16,000 Selinunte people died and 5,000 were enslaved. After 150 years, unable to rise, and defeated, the city was completely abandoned. In 1802, excavations began at the site and they continue to this day. 1) What to see in the Selinunte Archaeological Park? VISIT THE TEMPLE OF HERA
The monuments there are divided into groups: three temples are on the eastern hill of the park, five are on the ancient acropolis and the last on the Sanctuary of Demetra Malophoros. The best preserved temple there is the temple dedicated to Hera. Built in Doric style, the temple was built in 409 B.C. and is of a unique beauty!
2) What to see in the Selinunte Archaeological Park? VISIT OTHER TEMPLES
Other temples that, although not so well preserved, present a breathtaking panorama are the temple dedicated to Athens and the temple dedicated to Zeus. On the other hill of the park, there are the temples dedicated to Castor and Pollux, a temple without a clear dedication and the temple dedicated to Apollo. The temple dedicated to several gods has several altars.
3) What to see in the Selinunte Archaeological Park? VISIT THE SANCTUARY
West of the Acropolis, in Gaggera, there are the remains of a shrine dedicated to a female deity, perhaps Demeter, the Shrine of Demetra Malophoros. The access to the sacred area is through a covered prop, with two pediments at the ends: here were two altars for sacrifices, a well and the Malophoros temple. Built and expanded several times, it combines Doric, ionic and Punic elements.
