A little on history…

The history of Trieste is ancient. There are records of people who already lived in this territory since the second millennium BC; One of the best-known peoples of the region were the Castellieri, who lived in villages perched on the heights and protected by huge stone fortifications. The inhabitants of this area belonged to populations of Illyrian and Indo-European origins. Read also: Itinerary of seven days by car in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The name Tergeste is of pre-Roman origin, and the suffix terg is a typical Venetian toponym that means market. But there are those who say that the Latin origin of the name tergestum” is linked to the fact that the Romans had to fight three battles to conquer the territory, that is: Ter-gestum bellum” being ter” referring to three and gerere bellum”. ” reference to war (which would be a past participle of gestum bellum”). Let’s go on our itinerary through Triste?

1) What to see in a day in Trieste? THE MUNICIPAL SQUARE

One of the most important points in Trieste is its main square. Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia is considered one of the most beautiful squares in all of Europe and, once there, you will understand why: it is splendid! The square is surrounded on three sides by palaces, all of which are very well preserved. The most important of them are: the Palace of the Municipality of Trieste, the Palazzo della Giunta Regionale del Friuli Venezia Giulia and the City Hall. To crown all this beauty, we have a divine image of the sea. In fact, Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia is also the largest square overlooking the sea in Europe.

Golden tip:

  • When in the square, be sure to visit the historic Caffè degli Specchi. The place was opened in 1839 and is of impressive beauty, in addition to presenting delicious delicacies at any time of the day.

2) What to see in a day in Trieste? THE SOURCE OF THE FOUR CONTINENTS

In the square you can also see Fountain of the Four Continents. The Fountain took three years to be completed, from 1751 to 1754, and was made by Giovanni Battista Mazzoleni. The source, as its name says, presents us with a beautiful image of the four continents that were known at that time: Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

3) What to see in a day in Trieste? MOLO AUDACE, PALAZZO CARCIOTII AND THE CHURCH OF SAN NICOLÒ

From there, you can continue walking to the waterfront, where the magnificent Molo Audace is located. It is with this view that the city welcomes visitors arriving by train in Trieste. Strolling along the waterfront, we soon see a beautiful palace: Palazzo Carciotti. There you can also see the church of San Nicolò and an incredible walkway that seems to float in the sea, with more than 200 meters! It is magnificent, almost poetic. I don’t even need to say that the sunset seen from here is something memorable, right?

4) What to see in a day in Trieste? THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

Another place that is definitely worth a visit is the Serbian Orthodox Church. This is the most important Orthodox church in all of Italy. It is of unparalleled beauty and features a Greek cross, referring to the architectural style we know as Neo-Byzantine. It is, in fact, imposing and its façade is eye-catching, impeccably blending simplicity and elegance.

5) What to see in a day in Trieste? THE ROMAN THEATER

Another must-see in Trieste is its Roman Theater. Close to the main square, the Roman Theater is one of the most important legacies left by the Romans in Trieste. This beautiful theater had 6,000 seats and, in its heyday, had a view of the sea. With the modernization of the city, this view was lost, but it is still impressive and worth a visit!

6) What to see in a day in Trieste? RICARDO’S ARC

After visiting the Castle of San Giusto, returning to sea level, we find the famous Arch of Ricardo. This is an almost intact arch and a strong testament to the Romans’ passage through the territory.

Golden Tips:

  • In Trieste, you cannot miss having a coffee at the splendid and historic Caffé ‘San Marco. In operation since 1914, it is one of the oldest and most coveted coffee shops in all of Italy. Splendid! The location? Via Battisti 18/A.

7) What to see in a day in Trieste? THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN GIUSTO

Leaving the Roman Theater, continue your tour along the beautiful Via Di Donota. From there, we reached the top of a hill. There is the Cathedral of San Giusto. Although it has a mixed architectural style, its Romanesque influence is evident. The church is actually a junction of two earlier Romanesque basilicas. The union happened in the year 300 and, on the right side, you can see a small rose window not centered on the facade.

8) What to see in a day in Trieste? THE CASTLE OF SAN GIUSTO

Leaving the Cathedral, be sure to visit the San Giusto Castle, which is nearby. The castle was once a residence and over time it deteriorated. It was fully restored in the 2000s and today it is used as a Civic Museum by the City Council of Trieste, which has owned the property since 1930. To get there, you will pass through several ruins. These ruins are from an old basilica that used to be on the site where Tergestino Castle and the Lapidar Museum are located today, which can also be great tour options if you have more time available.

Our itinerary in Trieste

BONUS: MIRAMARE CASTLE AND RISIERA DI SAN SABBA

These two points are further away from our itinerary, but if you have time, they are worth a visit!

Miramare Castle

It is impossible not to mention the wonderful Miramare Castle. This beautiful castle was built for Maximilian of Austria who lived there with his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, until 1864. It was in this same year that he accepted, resulting in his death, the crown of Mexico: he was shot. So his brother Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and his wife Elizabeth, who many know as the historic Sissi, spent several days at this location. I suggest you visit it with a guide and be sure to observe all the details of the place! Skip-the-line ticket to Miramare Castle, click here to learn more!

Risiera di San Sabba

Another place that you cannot miss is the Risiera di San Sabba. This site was born as a rice bagging factory in the late 19th century and was the only concentration camp that had its own crematorium. It was qualified by the Nazis as Polizeihaftlager, which was a police detention camp and had, in fact, three functions: to eliminate hostages, guerrillas, Italian, Slovenian and Croatian political prisoners and Jews; screening of political deportees and to other Reich concentration camps – normally Dachau, Buchenwald and Mauthausen camps for politicians, Auschwitz (and later Bergen Belsen) for Jews; and a storage place for goods stolen from Jewish communities. I understand that it is not an easy visit, but it makes us understand a lot about the Nazi period in Italy and, historically, it is very rich in information.
