Introduction

In one of the most beautiful regions of Italy, Trento presents itself in a discreet but attentive way to its visitors. It offers beauty, history and is an easy city to walk through. It is essentially a university city, but offers its tourists a great structure with excellent hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions.

1) What to do in Trento? VISIT PIAZZA DUOMO

We start our tour through the heart of the city: the place where everything happens and, in the summer, offers outdoor shows! We are talking about the wonderful Piazza Duomo (“Cathedral Square”), which is the most famous and frequented place in this very special city. Close to the train station, you can get there within 5 minutes of walking.

Piazza Duomo offers a splendid view of the equally beautiful Duomo, which is the Cathedral of St Vigil , sumptuous and beautiful, blending its mix of Gothic and Baroque elements in an irreproachable way. Inside, you can admire this beautiful place in all its artistic and historic splendor, as the famous Council of Trent was held here. 2) What to do in Trento? VISIT THE PALAZZO PRETORIO AND THE CIVIC TOWER

Leaving the towers, explore the Duomo Square a little; there you will find the important Palazzo Pretorio (Pretorio Palace), which today houses the Cathedral Treasury and the Diocesan Tridentine Museum. It is worth the visit if you like art and history: it is rich in paintings that tell the whole story of the Council of Trent and illustrate the economic, political and social growth of the city. There, next to the Palazzo Pretorio, you will notice the Civic Tower: climb it! It is worth it and the view is a stunning panorama. There are 156 steps, nothing absurd, and it costs 10 euros to admire the view from the top and visit the Tridentine Museum.

3) What to do in Trento? VISIT THE BUONCONSIGLIO CASTLE AND THE TORRE DELL´AQUILA

After visiting Piazza Duomo and its attractions, you can head to Buonconsiglio Castle . It’s close by, a 10-minute walk. Impeccably signposted, it will leave you almost speechless when your eyes meet the incredible Castle; it is monumental and deserves an internal visit. Symbol of the secular power of the bishops who chose it as their residence. When looking at the Castle, we notice the oldest part of the structure, Castelvecchio, the part added in the 16th century, Magno Palazzo and Giunta Albertina in baroque style. At the end is Torre dell’Aquila (“Tower of the Eagle”). The visit there includes several rooms, the courtyard – which is open – and has three rows of galleries: the Gothic-Venetian gallery overlooking the city, the bishops’ room and the Roman gallery with splendid frescoes depicting biblical and mythological episodes.

The Torre dell’Aquila always remains the most beautiful part of the entire Buonconsiglio castle and is well worth a visit! Here is the fresco ‘Cycle of the Months’, painted at the end of the 14th century by an anonymous painter and is a masterpiece of international Gothic, which narrates the life of Trent in the 14th century. There you can admire scenes of peasant works and aristocratic leisure activities, represented in the succession of the seasons, in the changes of nature, in the works of man and, of course, over the months. Notes: taking photos is prohibited. The ticket price for the Castle is 10 euros; to visit the Tower, pay an additional 2 euros.

4) What to do in Trento? VISIT MUSE AND THE PALAZZO DELLE ALBERE

Leaving the Buonconsiglio Castle, proceed to Via Verdi. From there, take a walk to the MUSE, an ultra-modern building that you will see in front of you in an impressive way! Before entering the Science Museum, take the opportunity to admire the Albere Palace; the old fortress has a fresco cycle that is still preserved inside. The rest of the time you can use to explore and visit the famous MUSE as we mentioned earlier: the ticket costs 10 euros and offers a very interesting visit, especially if you are traveling with children!

5) What to do in Trento? VISIT VIA BELENZANI AND ITS ATTRACTIONS

Be sure to walk along the elegant Via Belenzani, which houses imposing buildings with facades with frescoes like the one at the Colico Palace, recognizable by the portal topped by a beautiful triple lancet window! At the end of Via Belenzani, there is the church of Saint Francis Saverio, one of the few examples of the Baroque in Trento and where we can enter without fear of disappointing them: its interior is very beautiful! We continue on Via Manci, full of Renaissance palaces, including the Galasso palace, also called the Devil’s Palace, about which Goethe wrote; it has that name, because, legend has it, that the Devil would have built it in just one night.

Unmissable

After visiting the historic center, take the Sardagna cable car, just 200 meters from Piazza Dante, towards the Adige river. With a few minutes’ walk, you can reach a viewpoint 600 meters above sea level, which shows us an incredible view of Trento and the Val d’Adige. The best time? At sunset! It’s incredible!
