In fact, the project for the square was the work of Michelangelo Buonarroti, who took care of everything (including the floor).

In the center of the square was placed the bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius (which at the time was in the San Giovanni Gate Square), today it has been replaced with a replica – the original is preserved in the Capitoline Museums.
