1) Saint Michael the Archangel and his sanctuary in Italy – VISIT HIS CAVE

The cave where the archangel appeared is nowadays a sanctuary full of believers and possibly one of the only ones that was not consecrated by human hands. The structure has 89 steps (also has an elevator) and, going down, you can see various inscriptions and symbols on the walls. The bronze doors were made in 1076, in Constantinople, and depict biblical scenes. The floor is all covered with marble and the cave accommodates around 80 worshipers in its benches. On the altar there is a beautiful image of Saint Michael, with his arm raised, wielding a sword, and a crucifix. Below the image is a stone with a child’s footprint that is said to be from St Michael.

2) Saint Michael the Archangel and his sanctuary in Italy – VISIT THE MUSEUM

Below the Sanctuary is a museum with various Byzantine and Longobard objects from past centuries. The cave is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and is the only one in Italy.

3) Saint Michael the Archangel and his sanctuary in Italy – UNDERSTAND THE SACRED LINE OF SAINT MICHAEL

A curiosity is the ‘straight line’ that ‘unites’ seven shrines dedicated to Saint Michael. Known as the Sacred Line of Saint Michael, it passes through seven countries and, looking at the map, the precision of the line is amazing! This line is said to be the ‘mark’ of the sword stroke that the Archangel delivered to the devil to send him back to hell after the battle in heaven between the faithful and rebellious angels who, led by Lucifer, had revolted against God. In addition, it is perfectly aligned with the sunset on the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and passes through Ireland, England, France, Italy, Greece and Israel.

4) Saint Michael the Archangel and his sanctuary in Italy – VISIT THE CASTLE

There is also a Castle to visit in the city, with an impressive tower of 18 meters in height; the ‘mansioni’ of the 9th century, which are in the Junno neighborhood and were created to house pilgrims during their stays. Today, it is where stores and other commercial establishments are located, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (“St Mary Major”) and the Baptistery of St John, which together form the monumental complex of San Pietro.
