Our Introduction
In this text, however, we will give you space, not the city of the strait, but the places that you can visit from Reggio Calabria, places that are not just those that, beautifully, became famous for their natural and suggestive fruition, where you can enjoy it for 9 out of 12 months of the year, but also in neighboring cities, rich in culture and entertainment, such as Pentidattilo, Gerace, Scilla, Stilo and other important cities that are located near or in the province of Reggio Calabria.
1) Round trip from Reggio Calabria? MEET SCILLA
We will start from a small village a few kilometers from Reggio Calabria, Scilla, close to the sea that has always been frequented by tourists and artists. The city’s name is linked to mythology, with the legend of Scylla and Charybdis, who were, respectively, one side of Calabria and the other of Sicily in the Strait of Messina. Beautiful beach, dominated by a castle within walking distance, with a small village, located at the height of the rock, very beautiful, with an incredible view. The sunset seen from here is spectacular.
About Chianalea
The characteristic narrow streets, ruined houses leaning on the sea, small fountains, old buildings, small restaurants where you can taste fresh fish delicacies, is what this small village has to offer. All this is topped off by the sound of waves crashing on the rocks. Chianalea is like this, like a painting with houses built on the rocks overlooking the sea, they look like a painting, a beautiful painting, all of them connected together, offering tourists incredible beauty. Chianela is known as the Venice of the South and you can easily take the train from Reggio. Read more about Scilla and Chianalea.
2) Round trip from Reggio Calabria? KNOW PENTADATTILO
Another place close to Reggio Calabria that is worth visiting is Pentadattilo, a pretty village in the municipality of Melito Porto Salvo, in the province of Reggio Calabria. Of the beautiful villages in Italy, where there are many, the magic that Pentedattilo possesses is not found anywhere else. As soon as you arrive in front of this village, when you look at this stone that surrounds the houses, your jaw drops and in disbelief in front of a miraculous beauty that combines the advantages of nature and the good taste of man. Photos cannot show the true beauty of this magical place! A car is needed to reach this village. Read more about Pentedatillo.
3) Round trip from Reggio Calabria? MEET GERACE
After Pentadattilo you need to make a stop in the spectacular Gerace, another small town in the province of Reggio Calabria, placed on top of a tufa cliff in Aspromonte, in a characteristic panoramic position, on the Ionian Sea and a large part of the territory of the city of Locri . Gerace is a city of great historical and artistic interest, especially its important historic center, existing since ancient times.
About Gerace
The historic center is along the street that leads to Borgo Maggiore Gerace, where the road opens onto the stone. By the time of the Normans, Gerace had become a principality as well as an important religious center and throughout the entire territory, various sacred sites were distributed. Of great importance is also the small church of San Giovannello (10th century) and the church of Santa Maria del Mastro, with a Greek cross, in addition to the Cathedral. In the historic center, between the churches, the castle and its beautiful streets that cross the city, you can enjoy the charm that this place exudes and that only these places have, full of contrasts that look great with each other, linked by a single element, the past. A car is needed to reach this village. Read more about Gerace.
4) Round trip from Reggio Calabria? KNOW STILO
Another key place in the province of Reggio Calabria is Stilo, a small center that rises as if carved into the tuff wall at the foot of Monte Consolino. This fascinating place appears to the visitor as a rich cradle, jealously guarding secrets over the years. The Stilo origin is linked to the destruction of the Magno-Greek city Kaulon (Caulonia) through the work of Dionysius of Syracuse during the Greek period. The historic center, which still retains its medieval origins, the horseshoe shape, the walls, the Laure, the remains of the castle and many small churches, makes this center the most Byzantine in Calabria. In this area, Eastern monasticism settled in the 10th century, seeking refuge from persecution, seeking the ideal of poverty and detachment from the world.
About Stilo
The main witness of the many Basilian hermit liturgical centers in Stilo, has the Catholic church as its flagship, characteristic for its shape and for its construction with brick materials, which gives it a reddish color. Calabria is a treasure that every year is visited by thousands of Italian and foreign tourists. Stilo, among other things, gave birth to the philosopher Tommaso Campanella and is the heart of the park dedicated to him. A car is needed to reach this village. Read more about STILO.
