Introduction

The city’s cathedral is beautiful and worth the visit, in addition, you can have a panoramic view of the city climbing either the Guinigi Tower or the Torre delle Ore (“Tower of the Hours”). A golden tip: try the cannolo! It is a Sicilian sweet, famous all over the world and very tasty, which is popular in this region of Tuscany! To learn more about the Tuscany Region, click here!

1) How to get to Lucca from Florence? WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Below are the options with Public Transport.

Public Transport – TRAIN

The first option that we will present is, of course, by train: Line Firenze – Lucca – Viareggio, leaving from Santa Maria Novella, in Florence. Lucca Train Station is right in front of the entrance to the walled city, where the main attractions and sights are. You can buy tickets online and, I really advise you to buy them in advance, this way you plan better and save a lot of time! Always remember to validate your tickets at the stations.

  • Trip Duration: average of 1 hour and 30 minutes, departing approximately every 30 minutes. You can get off: at Lucca Train Station.
  • From the station, you can go to the Historic Center, which is very well maintained, and does not show its 400 years of history. You can visit the cathedral of the city, which is one of the most beautiful places in Lucca, and observe the city from the top of the towers that we mentioned at the beginning of the post. In addition, on foot, if you have time, stop at one of the many bars for coffee!
  • If your option is to take a taxi, in all fairness, it is not worth it! The best option is the train, and the station is in front of the city entrance.

Public Transport – BUS

Line A-11, from Vai-Bus, leaving from Porta al Prato-Leopolda Station, Firenze, tram on line 1. The bus passes through the airport and the final stop in Lucca is at Piazzale Verdi, within the city walls. The bus passes every hour. ATTENTION: Train and bus timetables change during the winter and in the summer, check before leaving!

Tip

  • If you have the energy to face the “marathon” you can also take the opportunity to visit Pisa. From Lucca train station, head to Pisa San Rossore station, which is about 20 minutes away.

Advantages

  • Ideal option for people who like to do things at their own pace;
  • For people who are used to traveling, mainly by train;
  • For young people, for those who are backpacking;
  • And especially for people who want to save money and are in no hurry.

Disadvantages (and not advisable)

  • For families with young children and for elderly people it ends up being very tiring. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!
  • Having to adapt to the fixed schedules of the round-trip trains.
  • Having to go to the sights alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language.
  • Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or money you will spend extra on taxi once you reach your destination.

Another worth-mentioning detail

Get ready because, usually, the regional railway trains are very bad and sometimes very dirty, so do not create high expectations! If you use the train, always choose the high-speed train to avoid this type of problem. To understand the differences in trains, see the post I wrote about transportation in Italy. One more thing: the time that “wasted” with all these trips could be used to make the most of the visited city!

Did you know?

Trenitalia is the main Italian company dedicated to the management of railway transport. Find out here “What is the difference between trains in Italy?“. Buy your ticket online in advance and save a lot, read the Post “How to buy a train ticket in Italy?”.

2) How to get to Lucca from Florence? WITH A GROUP TOUR

A group tour offers, in general, what a private tour offers, the difference is that the city tour has fixed days to carry out the tours. This type of proposal is unique, in terms of quality and benefit, as you will get a much better price, as the amount can be shared with more people.

Group tours are a great alternative for those who do not want to spend so much and for those who are not used to traveling alone and, therefore, prefer to be in a group, where there will be a person who will organize all the tours of the day! That way you don’t have to worry about nothing! Just being rested and willing to discover magnificent places!

Advantages

  • IDEAL option if you are alone, as a couple or with up to seven friends;
  • To save on the time you would spend going to the train stations to take the trains, or with transportation to reach the tourist places to be visited in Assisi;
  • Visit of TWO cities on the same day (Assisi and Cassia or Orvieto);
  • Less time spent traveling, fees for taxis, trains and transportation;
  • Service with the charm that the Italian can offer and with the excellence that you seek;
  • You will be able to enjoy a “bicchiere di vino” (a glass of wine) during lunch without having to worry about driving later :), since in Italy the laws are strict against those who drive after they drank (even a small amount of alcohol) ;
  • If you have children, great! In addition to having a discount, with the assistant guide speaking in English, they will, in addition to understanding, questioning and learning much more about the local culture and life! They will love it;
  • If you are with elderly people or people with limited mobility, this option is ideal, as it requires little displacement and, when necessary, you will have all the necessary assistance.

Disadvantage

  • There is practically none! Just the matter of adapting to the program of the day, and meeting the tour schedule!

Note

  • Remember, always read customer testimonials before proceeding with the reservation.

3) How to get to Lucca from Florence? WITH A RENTED CAR

If you prefer to do things with more peace of mind and freedom of time, you can choose to rent a car to take this tour, but in my opinion it is worth it only if you are going to visit Pisa and Lucca, if you are going to visit only Pisa, I think it is easier to do with train!

How to get there by car

Take the A11 motorway and then go to E76, following the signs. TIP: Use a GPS. Despite being well signposted, the roads can confuse those who are not used to driving on Italian roads.

Prohibited places to park

This option is ideal if you like to drive, however, it is important to know that in tourist cities there are places (historic centers) where PARKING is PROHIBITED, and only residents’ cars can circulate! That is why it is important not to go to these places without knowing timetables and traffic limits, so as not to take unnecessary fines. STAY TUNED! In Italy, it is common for them to tow the car or put that hubcap that blocks the vehicle’s exit! Take care, O.K.?

How to understand what these places are?

See the post How not to get a ticket in Italy – ZTL that talks about it but, anyway, another tip for those who are unsure about it, is to park a little outside the center and go to the center on foot or, spending a little more, taxi or other public transport.

Advantages

  • If you are in 4 or 5 people it will be a great option in relation to the train or the bus;
  • Great for visiting more places on the same day, at your time and pace;
  • It is the best means of transport for people who are used to drive anywhere and have an easy time “locating” themselves

Disadvantages

  • You will need an international driver’s license (IDP) to be able to drive in Italy or the driver’s license from your country with certified translation;
  • Those who drive do not enjoy the beautiful scenery during the trip!
  • Extra expenses with GPS (average price of € 15.00) to avoid getting lost so much;
  • Another thing, people: to travel in Italy, as I have explained several times, it is necessary to have an international driver’s license or your driver’s license with certified translation, O.K.? If you don’t have it, DO NOT DRIVE, as you will have a lot of problems if you are stopped by the Italian police! READ THE POST DO I NEED AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE TO DRIVE IN ITALY?
  • Those who drive cannot drink, the Italian laws on this are very strict and you run the risk of getting a really huge fine. So if you intend to taste great Italian wine during lunch stay tuned about it! Don’t risk ruining your vacation !!!
  • It is not suitable for people who do not have the security to ask for information, especially if they do not speak Italian, as with the train or the bus not knowing the territory, you may end up wasting precious time that could be used for tourist visits.

4) How to get to Lucca from Florence? WITH A PRIVATE TOUR

The last option is a private tour. The advantage of the private tour is the total freedom to decide your own time, not having to wait to leave, wasting unnecessary time using it to visit other places. In addition, the tour departs comfortably from your own hotel, which is important when you have little time available to visit a few places.

Absolute Comfort

In addition, of course, the arrival will not be at the train or bus station, but directly at the sight you want to visit. And if you book in advance, you will often be able to have the driver in your own language, so you can easily ask for clarification about the trip.

This type of tour is ideal for VIPs, who want comfort from start to finish, for small groups of friends or for the elderly. This type of service guarantees absolute comfort for those who travel. Basically, you should just enjoy the tour without the stress of attending train, subway, bus schedules, or worrying about where the main places to be seen are!
