Work Exchange in Italy: what do you need to know?

Italy is an amazing country and getting to know this fantastic country is a unique experience! However, Italy goes beyond famous sights, culture and history; Italy is made of hardworking, strong people; they work A LOT! You can work, or do volunteer work, and get to know the most authentic side of Italy. Today we are going to know a little more about the so-called Work Exchange in Italy. Here at  Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia  you make the trip of your dreams !!! ALSO: see our  “Accommodation in Italy – Tips for your holidays!”

Our Introduction

For those who truly want to immerse themselves in Italian culture and live with an Italian ‘vero’, you can choose to do an exchange program, or work as a volunteer in several Italian locations through the Work Exchange in Italy. The aim of these different programs that offer this option is to contribute to Italian development in a natural, economical and eco-sustainable way. Read also: invitation letter to enter Italy.

The exchange is mutual…

You receive accommodation and food and literally get your hands dirty, helping on farms, inns, restaurants, etc. The work is not easy, but it is very satisfying and can be an excellent option for those who want to travel economically. There are vacancies available in several Italian regions, and they are open as needed in all seasons of the year. Also read: What to do if I lose my credit card in Italy?

Is it mandatory to speak Italian?

Not necessarily, but it’s good that you know at least the basics of the Italian language. Visit our section: communication in Italy and learn a little Italian before you travel!

A little more about Work Exchange

The term Work Exchange encompasses an audience that offers its time, knowledge and labor in exchange for room and board. This can be applied in several areas such as volunteering and social projects, ecovillages, hotels, among others. It’s a real exchange of experiences: you offer your skill and learn many others too! It’s ideal for those who want to travel without haste, and don’t mind traveling without luxury and glamour.

How to find a vacancy?

The best way to find a vacancy is through several websites that refer you to the structures that are looking for help. There is a small fee to be paid to access the information and apply for it, but it’s not unreasonable. Hours worked and working days are negotiated between the hirer and the hired, as well as accommodation and the work to be performed.

Make sure that everything is very clear and specified between you and your contractor, so you don’t have any problems. It is also important to respect the rules imposed, such as hours and the specified service, and be aware of your rights, but also your duties. Don’t let your host down, they really need you, OK?!

Is it worth it?

It is! Especially if, as we’ve already mentioned, you don’t mind traveling without luxury and glamour. Also read: cultural differences between northern and southern Italy?

Can I choose what I want to do and where I want to go?

Yea! However, I suggest that you be open to new experiences, without fear of being happy! Of course, if you don’t like being immersed in nature, avoid choosing to work on a farm. If you don’t get along with very busy places, working in a restaurant will be death for you, but if you are up for anything, you learn fast, like to exchange experiences, learn new things and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you have a much better chance of finding a super cool place to work. Good to know

  • People, remember that you can also find something related to what you already do. Are you a photographer? You can find a vacancy to work with someone who needs professional photos; are you a musician? You may find someone who needs someone to play guitar in a restaurant during dinner. The possibilities are endless and, with a good search, you can find the right job for you.
  • It’s also important to be aware that in some locations you may need to work on weekends and probably your day off will be during the week; of course you can negotiate this, but it will always be possible.

Golden Tip

  • Find out ALL the details about the desired vacancy, OK? Try to negotiate everything BEFORE traveling, ask if the room offered is private, if it is shared, if there is transport near the structure, if you will have time off, what will be the working hours, what is the meal plan, etc. Get ALL your questions answered, ALL! But, a piece of advice, keep in mind that unexpected events happen, so if you need to work a little overtime, don’t object, after all things are not always impeccably accurate, OK?! How long do the programs last?

It depends! Some last 3 to 6 weeks, and others can last up to three months! Of course, it will depend on your availability and the needs of your host. That is why it’s important to plan and negotiate your work schedule well.

Who can apply?

Older than 18 years.

I’m afraid to travel alone. Are the programs safe?

Very safe! There is no reason to be afraid. It is important to know that Italy is a very safe country, and the people who will hire you will receive you very well and with great affection, rest assured. Find out here: how to travel alone in Italy?
