Commerce was the great strength of the Republic of Venice, and this brought to the city, and also to St Mark’s Basilica, both an artistic culture and the influences of the monuments of Constantinople, combining forms and characters from various segments of art. However, the basilica is considered the most solemn monument of Venetian-Byzantine art that has come down to us. 4) Why visit St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice? FIVE BASILICA ATTRACTIONS

Get to know in detail the attractions of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

Mosaics of St. Mark’s Basilica

In addition to the impressive attractions and unlimited details, there are essentially five things not to be missed when you are inside the Basilica. The first is definitely the mosaics of St. Mark’s Basilica, which date mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, some were replaced in the 15th and 18th centuries by the Venetian painters Tiziano, Tintoretto, Tiepolo and Veronese. All of these mosaics represent the life and work of Jesus Christ.

The Ground of St. Mark’s Basilica

The other notable thing is the ground, in fact, the floor mosaics, that show some perspective images, figures, nice ornaments and animals. Unfortunately, today, some of the mosaics are covered with rugs, for protection reasons.

The Parish Treasure of the Basilica

You cannot miss the parish treasure on the right side, which is practically made up of artistic treasures, which were taken to Venice after the sack of Constantinople, including the marble “Saint Mark’s throne”, liturgical chalices, cups and patens of hard stone. Also not to be missed is the ‘major altar’, which houses the remains of St. Mark. The canopy pillars are also beautiful, decorated with reliefs.

Pala d’Oro of St. Mark’s Basilica

We arrive at the main attraction of the Basilica, which is the famous ‘Pala d’Oro’ (“Golden Pall”). It is located behind the main altar and can be admired just by paying a ticket. Goldsmith’s masterpiece was made in various periods, between the 10th and 13th centuries. There are numerous precious stones, pearls and enamels, inserted in the Pala d’Oro, which also contains Byzantine works and items stolen in Constantinople. It is undoubtedly a masterpiece worth visiting.

St. Mark’s Museum

From the hall, then up a flight of steep stairs, we arrive at the St Mark’s Museum. Here you have the opportunity to admire the exceptional gilded bronze carriage; unique example of antiquity, which was pulled by four horses, where you arrive after the fascinating tour of the museum. In the pavilions, inside the basilica, the museum allows to contemplate the mosaics from above, as well as a view of the terrace and admire the magnificent St Mark’s Square.
