It is possible to see from the top Trapani and Marsalla. For his privileged position, Erice was the scene of several disputes and battles. The people who lived there were Elimo, who founded the city in the 5th century BC; decades later, the city was conquered by Arabs, Romans and Normans. A little about Erice

The city lives on tourism and the cobbled streets (in fact, be careful with your steps there: some stones are slippery and trips due to their unevenness can happen!) present several churches, convents, forts, gardens and countless lovely shops, all of them very small. Ah, the small salt mountains of the neighboring islands, Egadi, contribute to an impeccable view between the white and the blue of the sea and the sky! How about taking a half-day tour of Erice? We have an Unmissable Tour here!

What to do in Erice?

They say that Erice is the city of ‘Il Nullafacente’, in inglese something like ‘who does nothing’, and that the people there are proud of this ‘title’! The city is also known for its Centro Internazionale di Cultura Scientifica Ettore Majorana (Ettore Majorana International Center of Scientific Culture), founded in the 1960s and bringing together researchers and students from all over the world throughout the year. The center’s headquarters are in a building erected in 1542 and which served as a monastery.

The city is 750 meters from sea level, concentrating its attractions and monuments in the historic center. I confess that it is not a good city to stay, also considering the difficult access, but it is worth a lunch or a sunset. If you want to shop: Via Vittorio Emanuele! The craft shops there are crazy! The city walls are almost all from the 4th century and a monument of great prominence is the Castle of Venere. If you have time, visit the Cathedral of the city: it is very beautiful! How to get to Erice?

By funivia, which is a cable car that leaves Trapani and costs 10 Euros roundtrip. The trip lasts 10 minutes and the scenery is worth every minute! Alternatively, you can go by car; if driving, drive carefully and carefully! The road is full of complicated curves. Parking is at the entrance to the city and, from there, it is no longer possible to travel by car, only residents have this access. Find out if the cable car is really working, as it may stop working in some seasons, click here to see the official Funivia’s website!
