How to get around inside Italian cities?

The first thing I suggest when you arrive at the hotel is: ask for a tourist map. Split the main tourist areas to be visited by the number of days you will have available in that city and then you can start your tour! Remember: always organize your time! So, today we will answer your question: How to move around inside Italian cities? In this post I will give you tips and information to get around in the best possible way inside the Italian cities. 1) How to move around inside Italian cities? WALKING

Normally all the tourist attractions are concentrated in the Historical Centers; from there, so much can be seen with a beautiful walk or if you prefer with public transportation as well. Enjoy the best of Italy; in Italy we have an open-air museum, where walking means breathing history. Not to mention the beauty of the landscapes and also the amazing gastronomy Italy offers. If you choose to move around walking, you can stop in some cafeteria, sit down and enjoy a coffee and the famous Cornetto (croissant). Or stop at a restaurant to make a delicious meal with homemade pasta and a sauce that you have never tasted like. Read our special post on How to get around in Italy?

2) How to get around inside Italian cities? PUBLIC TRANSPORT

When you don’t have too much time available (or when you are with children, or elderly people, or if we are with someone who has difficult to walk too much) the best thing is to use public transport or a taxi (consider also a private driver/transfer), for complete our itinerary, so you can visit as many places as possible in one day.

Where to buy the public transport tickets?

Remember that tickets for public transportation must be purchased before getting on buses or subways, at counters, self-service machines, ticket offices, tobacconists or publishing houses (newsstands).
Always validates your tickets!

A lot of people travel without validating their tickets, but – believe me – it is not worth it! The price of the ticket is very low and if you are surprised by the inspection and be with your ticket without the validation, you will pay a very expensive fine! Plus: you will have to get down immediately from the bus. You will even get a verbal warning; do you think it’s embarrassing?

Do you really think it’s worth it?

Always validate the tickets, or as a better alternative, buy the tickets that are valid for the whole day. The machine to validate the tickets is always inside the bus. In the case of trains you will always find the machine near the binary/platform you’re embarking in.

3) How to get around inside Italian cities? PUBLIC TRANSPORT COSTS (SUBWAY)

How much are we spending on the subway in Italy? Considering that bus and metro tickets have a low price, you’ll spend around 1.50 euros per trip, and that most cities, such as Rome, Milan or Venice, give us the possibility to buy a daily ticket (for the whole day), which will help us to save even more. Just for an idea of prices, in Rome, see below.

  • BIT (EUR 1.50) valid for 100 minutes from its validation
  • BIG (EUR 7.00) for 24 hours, unlimited.
  • BIG ($12.50) for 48 hours, unlimited.
  • BTI ($18.00) for 3 days, unlimited.
  • CIS ($24.00) for 7 days, unlimited.

4) How to move around inside Italian cities? GROUP OR PRIVATE TOUR

My first suggestion is a tour in a small group; I’m talking about a private tour. The difference is that the city tour has fixed days to make the tours. This kind of proposal is unique, in terms of quality and benefit, because you will get a much better price, since the prices can be shared with more people.

Group Tour

Group tours are a great alternative for those who don’t want to spend so much and for those who are not used to travel alone and therefore prefer to be in a group where you will have a person who will organize all the tours of the day! That way you don’t have to worry with nothing! Just to be rested and willing to visit magnificent places! And be there on time! 😉

Private Tour

The advantage of the private tour is the total freedom to decide your own time, not having to wait to leave, wasting unnecessary time that you could be using to know places. Besides, the tour leaves from your own hotel, an important thing when you have little time available to know a few places.
