La Spezia serves as a starting point for anyone who wants to visit Cinque Terre, but it should not be overlooked and deserves a visit, even if it is a quick one. La Spezia is a city in Liguria with around 95,000 inhabitants. It is not a tiny city, but it does not require many days to visit. 1) Where to stay in La Spezia? IN THE HISTORIC CENTER

Among the best areas to stay is the historic center, which is where most of the tourist attractions are located, as well as being close to the sea and making it easy to walk to other parts of the city. If you still want to be close to the center, but not really in the historic center, a good option is the port area of the city.

Safe and busy, it is an excellent option to find great hotels at very fair prices. Another excellent region, especially if you want to make round trips to other cities, is the region of the central train station. Self-explanatory, isn’t it ?! The accommodation in this area is a little more affordable, but leaves nothing to be desired, despite not being the most charming area in the city.

2) Where to stay in La Spezia? CLOSE TO CASTELLO DI SAN GIORGIO

One of the main points is the Castello di San Giorgio, which today houses a museum and is one of the most visited tourist spots. The Castle is the monument that best represents the historical events of the city of La Spezia. Located on the small hill of Poggio, the neighborhood dominates with its late medieval architecture. The castle underwent numerous construction phases that have been documented since the second half of the 14th century.

In 1443 the castle underwent a renovation and was equipped and perfected for the use of firearms. In 1554, the construction of great importance in the castle was for defensive support, called Bastia, whose ruins have appeared recently. In 1607, another renovation took the castle to its current form and it was used as a defense against the Spanish. The museum that the castle now houses is dedicated to Ubaldo Formentini, who was director of the Library and Civic Museum, between 1923 and 1958. It is one of the most renowned in Italy and has become the cultural center of La Spezia.

The medieval architecture of the castle

The medieval architecture of the castle extends to the city center and is another strong point here: well maintained, the buildings seem to have refused to modernize and have retained all the splendor of the older times. Passing Via Prione it is possible to reach the maritime area of the city. At sea you can see military ships that tell the history of this city. Nearby is the city’s botanical garden, it is small, but it has very beautiful specimens of different plants.

3) Where to stay in La Spezia? CLOSE TO THE CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST KING

The Cathedral of Christ King is the main religious interest in the city. Located in the majestic central Piazza Europa (Europa Square), after the creation of the new diocese of La Spezia in 1929, it was decided to build a new cathedral and this was the chosen place. There was a contest and the project that won the competition was the one proposed by architect Brenno Del Giudice, which remained on paper until 1956.

It was consecrated in 1975 and is distinguished by its circular plan, which resembles a host. Surrounded by twelve strong columns bearing the names of the Apostles, the columns serve to support the huge dome, the interior is adorned with marble decorations on the altar and works by Lia Godano. In the middle is a beautiful wooden crucifix from the 18th century, while in the baptistery are the Choir chapter and the bronze statue of the Deposition of Christ, by Angiolo Del Santo. In the vaulted crypt are the relics, the remains of Saint Venerius, the tomb of the mystic Itala Mela and the first bishops of the diocese.

4) Where to stay in La Spezia? CLOSE TO THE CHURCH OF SAINT MARY OF THE ASSUMPTION

La Spezia is also home to the oldest church in the city: Saint Mary of the Assumption, which is beautiful. The first document that mentions St Mary is dated 1343. In addition, some relics such as the glazed terracotta piece, representing the Coronation of the Virgin, by Andrea della Robbia, and an image showing the multiplication of bread, by Giovanni Battista Casoni, which today stands on the balcony and is dated 1642, in addition to ‘The Martyrdom of St Bartholomew’, by Luca Cambiaso, there is also the baptismal font and all the works of the church and convent of St Francis.

There is also the marble tomb of Baldassare Biassa, captain of the Republic’s fleet in 1475 and, in 1503, was the elected commander of Pope Julius II. In the apse, note the chapel of the Sacred Heart, painted in the thirties by Luigi Agretti and the image of Christ the Redeemer, made in 1936 by Angiolo Del Santo.

5) Where to stay in La Spezia? CLOSE TO THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF HEALTH

Nearby, it is also possible to see the Church of Our Lady of Health. The construction of the sacred building began in 1887 and was completed in 1900, although some architectural elements were still missing on the facade: the two bell towers with neo-baroque domes were only completed in 1912. The plaque memorial inside the baptistery was placed there in 1910 on the occasion of the solemn consecration made by Bishop Giovanni Carli.

The first service took place in 1900. The interior has a single vaulted nave with galleries on the sides of the presbytery and a large baroque marble altar dating from 1771, the interior decorations were made by Costa, Navarrini and Bifoli. The throne, located about eleven meters from the ground, is protected by four yellow marble columns from Verona with sculptures and decorations in Carrara marble, where there is the venerated effigy of the Madonna della Salute, oil on canvas that was previously kept in a unknown location. In fact, origin and author are unknown, however, it seems to be a work that dates back to the 16th century. The canvas was adorned in 1925 by gold tiaras made by merging jewelry donated by parishioners.

6) Where to stay in La Spezia? CLOSE TO THE CHURCH OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS

Last but not least, it is possible to visit the Church of Our Lady of the Snows. At the top of the imposing staircase leading to the church, it is possible to see the facade decorated with white and gray stripes presented in its highlights with three portals: a central one, which has a richly decorated balcony and is enriched by mosaics and various ornaments. Then there are a pair of false side towers that complete the ensemble, while the royal bell tower rises to the bottom on the right side, on Via Napoli.

The suggestive interior has three naves with coffered ceilings, divided by masonry pillars, interspersed with pairs of red marble columns from Verona and Corinthian capitals of Byzantine inspiration. The walls of the central nave at the top, covered with Byzantine paintings, communicate with the side corridors through arched openings supported by elegant columns with a capital and fine finish. The pulpit (by Angiolo Del Santo), in light, polished stone, with writings and emblems, is also supported by red marble columns from Verona.
