First of all, it is important to say that the best way to get to know the Italian Alps, that is, the Dolomites, is by car. About the Dolomites

The Dolomites, also known as Pale Montains, for their white-covered peaks, are mountains on several levels. The area is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and covers 141,903 hectares of territory in the regions of Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, passing through five provinces: Trento, Bolzano, Belluno, Udine and Pordenone. The mountain range has eighteen peaks that rise 3,000 meters above sea level. The white snow on the mountains enchants our eyes and invites us to make the most of this incredible place! The region is full of lakes, ski resorts, hotels, restaurants and attractions for all ages.

That said, let’s find out which are the best cities to stay in the beautiful Dolomites! I’ll advance: it is not a cheap region to stay, this is because it is an area considered elegant and a point of celebrities, especially in winter. ALL cities in the region offer great accommodation options and an enviable tourist structure! They are not big cities, so, opting for a hotel right in the center of the cities or some hotel that requires a short walk to the center, rest assured that you will be very well located with no major problems to get around. 1) Where to sleep in the cities of the Dolomites? CORTINA D’ AMPEZZO

Cortina d’Ampezzo is the pearl of the Dolomites, a famous tourist center, surrounded by beautiful mountains that make it a unique destination and a mandatory visit in summer and winter. Cortina d’Ampezzo is the main tourist resort in the province of Belluno and is one of the most popular sights in the Dolomites. It Is the most expensive city to stay, but one of the best!!!

2) Where to sleep in the cities of the Dolomites? IN TRENTO

If you want a charming city, you can choose to stay in Trento. The political, religious and monumental center of the city is the beautiful Piazza del Duomo (“Cathedral Square”), which “shows itself” imposing to majestic noble palaces in the city such as Cazuffi-Rella, for example. In this square also stands the Cathedral of Saint Vigilius. In Romanesque style it was built in 1212 by order of Bishop Federico Vanga. Also not to be missed are the Pretorio Palace and Vanga Tower, which dates from the 13th century. Together with the city’s Cathedral, they form a spectacular complex that dominates the square, which is also where the 18th century Fountain of Neptune is located.

Be sure to see the Buonconsiglio Castle, which was the residence of the bishops of Trento from the thirteenth to the end of the 18th century. Today it houses a number of museums. Also worth mentioning are the buildings with facades in Venetian styles on the elegant Via Belenzani. Two that deserve special mention are: the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (“St Mary Major”), all in red marble, and the Tabarelli Palace, which has 22 profiles of sculpted local historical figures on its facade; both are from the 16th century. Last but not least, visit the 15th century Pona Geremia Palace. In its impressive facade, the decoration is made with frescoes that reproduce scenes from city life.

3) Where to sleep in the cities of the Dolomites? IN BOLZANO

Bolzano, located in the extreme north of Italy, borders Switzerland and Austria (if you want to visit these two countries, check the need for a visa!) and is still called Bolzen by the Germans. The Dolomites are in the eastern part of the city and are impressive in the eyes of tourists! In the region are some of the most popular ski resorts in the area and, therefore, it is a very well attended town, including VIPs, especially in winter. Piazza Walther (Walther Square)

The city’s nerve system is the incredible Piazza Walther. This is where cultural events, nightlife and the best shops, restaurants and hotels in the city are concentrated. This is also where the Bolzano Cathedral is located, which is a must! Another important location is Piazza Delle Erbe (“Herbs Square”), which, with its charming streets, delights its tourists! Bolzano, however, is famous for its impressive Archaeological Museum, almost entirely dedicated to Ötzi, also known as the Iceman.

Ötzi was found in the 90s and died more than 5,000 years ago! Extremely well maintained, the mummy is in a temperature-controlled chamber and is one of the most visited attractions in Bolzano. The discovery of Ötzi’s body created a real uproar in the scientific world precisely because it was so well preserved; this made life easier for scientists who were able to analyze how they lived, what they ate, how they protected themselves from the cold and how the people of that region hunted at that remote time. It is an unmissable tour!

4) Where to sleep in the cities of the Dolomites? IN BELLUNO

Belluno is a very (VERY!) Quiet city! Even with the movement of tourists, the city is one of the calmest in the Dolomites, ideal for those who want less movement. The historic center is incredible and, of course, very peaceful. One of the few cities that has maintained its mountain lifestyle. It is surrounded and protected by the majestic walls of the Dolomites with the famous Schiara Gusela de Vescovà, a 40 meter high tower, symbol of Belluno.

The city’s architecture impresses with its medieval buildings. The Old Market Square, which was once a Roman fort, competes in a healthy way with the beauty of Piazza Duomo (Duomo Square), which also houses the Palace of Rectors, the Cathedral and the Palace of Jurists, which today is the seat of the Civic Museum. Also in the city we find the beautiful Dolomiti Bellunesi Natural Park, characterized by an almost untouched nature, still wild and fascinating that presents us with rocky peaks and ‘enchanted’ valleys, watered by pure and crystalline water!

In the northern part of the city is the so-called Queen of the Dolomites, the city of Cortina d’Ampezzo. It is one of the most famous places for those who want to ski and enjoy winter sports, in addition to having a lively nightlife, especially during the winter season. This area is full of very interesting resorts that brings together fun, good food and sport in one place.

5) Where to sleep in the Dolomites? IN UDINE

Udine is home to many 18th century masterpieces, especially in its main tourist spots such as the city’s Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Oratory of Purity. The city lies between picturesque squares and canals and the oldest part involves elegant palaces in Venetian Gothic style, such as the Palazzo Comunale or Loggia del Lionello, which testify to the secular connection with the Serenissima State, Venice. The Castle and the Civic Museum are unmissable.

6) Where to sleep in the Dolomite? IN PORDENONE

Perhaps it is one of the least sought after cities for accommodation in this region, so it may be that the prices here are more affordable. (not as a rule, O.K.?!). Here it is possible to visit the City Hall area, where the clock tower and the city’s Cathedral are located, which houses an imposing bell tower.

The main street of the city is Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, which is full of historic buildings such as the famous Mantica – Cattaneo Palace and Ricchieri Palace, which today functions as the Civic Museum of Art. The small towns around Pordenone are also worth a visit! They are beautiful and present pleasant surprises to the tourist. It is ideal for those who like to be in contact with nature and, by car, it is possible to visit beautiful lakes that are around this area.
