1) Where to stay in Agrigento – IN THE HISTORICAL CENTER

If you want more excitement, a great option is to stay in the historic center of the city. The historic center of Agrigento is full of very interesting churches. Of course, one of the main ones is the city’s Cathedral. It is beautiful, imposing and dedicated to Saint Gerland. On the south facade, decorations with blind windows and the coat of arms of Montaperto enchant our eyes.

The combination of styles took place according to the passage of different peoples through the city, which means that there is an overlap of styles ranging from Norman to Gothic, passing through Baroque and Renaissance. There are a multitude of hotels and all are well located. Around the region there are other churches, bars, shops and restaurants, there is a great tourist structure!

The facade features a beautiful portal in the Gothic style of Chiaramontano and the works of art displayed inside the church are of rare beauty.

2) Where to stay in Agrigento ? AT THE CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION

As always, another excellent request for accommodation is close to the central railway station. It makes the detachment a lot easier and offers good options. In Agrigento, the central station is 15 minutes from the historic center, so it is very close. There are some small climbs, but nothing difficult. There you can choose to stay on the side of the historic center or on the other side of the station. There are SEVERAL accommodation options on both sides.

3) Where to stay in Agrigento ? RISERVA NATURALE ORIENTATA DI TORRE SALSA (“TORRE SALSA’S ORIENTED NATURE RESERVE”)

If you don’t mind staying far away (quite far away, but nothing that an one-hour trip by bus won’t do!), You can choose to stay close to the Riserva Naturale Orientata di Torre Salsa area. It is IDEAL for those who like the sea, peace, nature and tranquility and is close to bus stops that take you to the center. Hotels around here, of course, cost a lot less, so it’s a great option if you want to save money; the negative point is that you will be far from the center and the main sights.

If you are driving, an option to consider is hotels by the sea, especially in Viale del Dune, and along the entire shore of Agrigento. The beaches are beautiful and there are a multitude of hotels that face the sea.

The city, an ancient Greek city, is famous for its temples. It is one more beautiful than the other and the landscape around them is impressive! Agrigento was founded in 580 BC, and has a territory in which several peoples passed, all of them leaving their mark on the Island in some way. During the Punic Wars it was conquered by the Romans, who renamed it Agrigentum, to Latinize the city and show that it was dominated. Later the city came under Arab rule and was called Kerkent and, in 1089, it was the Normans’ turn to take over the territory. They called it Girgenti, a name that remained until 1927, when it was finally renamed Agrigento. It is known as the City of Temples and, the Valley of the Temples region, was included, in 1997, in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Temple of Zeus

The most visited temple is also the most important: it is the Temple of Zeus. Unfortunately, only a small part of it remains intact, but none of it detracts from its beauty. It is a colossal work, with 112.70 x 56.30 meters, seven Doric columns on the short sides and fourteen on the long sides. The architects of the time innovated, for the time, and studied even perspective, to create a structure not proportional, but that maintained the visual beauty.

Nearby are other Temples and it is difficult to say which one deserves and which one does not deserve to be visited, when in doubt, and if you have time, do not hesitate to go through them all! There are not that many hotels in this region, but for those who want to visit the Temples it is the ideal region.

Tip

Visit the temples at the end of the day! It is emptier and the setting sun seems to play with the ruins creating indescribable images! In the summer, some stay open until 8 pm, meaning: plenty of time!
