What to know about Italian habits
On the internet, from time to time someone talks about strange, bizarre habits and “unusual” attitudes of Italians, but some things said are not always true. Probably the person had a bad experience and left with a totally distorted picture of reality. The question is, how did this person behave? Did she or he give a reason, even not meaning it? Did this person judge the “buddy” without even getting to know him or her? Let’s get to our post of the day: What to know about Italian habits! Here at Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia you make the trip of your dreams !!! ALSO: see our “Accommodation in Italy – Tips for your holidays!”
Introduction
Always remembering that clueless, impolite people exist all over the world, it is not only in Italy; without further ado, let’s get to the subject: MYTHS and TRUTHS about Italians! Also read the habits of tourists in Italy that are worth a fine! and Cultural differences between northern and southern Italy?
1) What to know about Italian habits – THE ITALIANS DO NOT BATHE
This is one of the biggest lies about Italians! The Italian people are one of the most clean, scented and careful-about-appearance people in the world, including men. It is not difficult to get into some perfumery and see a sector entirely dedicated to male care. The story that Italians do not bathe is utopian: Italians take, on average, three baths a day, even in winter! So it’s MYTH!
2) What to know about Italian habit – ITALIAN PEOPLE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SMOKERS
Another lie! Italy is closing in on smokers and, in recent years, the result has been a severe drop in the number of Italian smokers! Today “only” 22% of the Italian population smokes and that number tends to fall, since the Italian Ministry of Health is very committed to this issue, that is: MYTH!
3) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS GREET YOU WITH KISSES
MYTH! Perhaps one of the biggest lies ever told by those who do not really know the Italian people! Italians are very affectionate, indeed – although they don’t always seem to be – but only with people close to them, both men and women! It is unlikely that a ‘stranger’ will ‘fill you with kisses’ without being intimate with you; then it’s MYTH! A handshake is enough for them!
4) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS ONLY DRINK CAPPUCCINO COFFEE IN THE MORNING
They think it is absurd to have a cappuccino after 10 am, but don’t worry: if you go into a bar and order a cappuccino after that time, no one will judge you, but they will know that you are not from there! Hahahaha… So, it’s true! Read also How is breakfast in Italy?
5) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS ABOMINATE KETCHUP AND OTHER CONDIMENTS
TRUTH with capital letters, in neon, shining with glitter, especially if we talk about pizza and other typical dishes! It is not difficult for you to receive an exterminating look from the waiter if you order condiments for your dish, especially ketchup. The condiments that ‘can be used’ are on the table and are usually: olive oil, salt, grated cheese and, in some places, pepper; apart from that, don’t ask for ANYTHING, as they feel really offended! They eat ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and other sauces with fries and sandwiches only. Read also How is pizza in Italy?
6) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS BLOW THE NOSE WITHOUT THE MINIMUM EMBARASSMENT
They say that the Italians make a real scandal when it comes to blowing their nose and that makes everyone notice the act: LIE! Italians are very polite about it, and they will give you a dirty look if you do it ‘wide open’. Another MYTH!
7) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS LOVE TO TALK
Italians love to talk and can tell you their whole lives in one conversation! Partially true! The truth is: it depends on where you are; in northern Italy this is not so common, as they are very reserved, in southern Italy: yes! They LOVE talking and it is very likely that they will tell you about their lives, their children, their grandchildren, invite you to lunch at their house without even knowing you, do something for you to take as a souvenir, etc, etc, etc … you will feel part of the family in minutes! The southern people are very friendly and don’t mind making friends in literally anywhere with anyone!
8) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS WILL CALL YOU FOR YOUR SURNAME
It also depends on where you are! Usually they use Mr and Mrs, to be polite, unless you ask to be called by your name; but, for example, in hotels, you will be Mr / Mrs ‘your surname’. They love surnames and all of them are VERY proud of theirs surnames, so in their heads, the rule holds true for the whole world! Read also Why do Italians gesticulate?
9) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS AND BLASPHEMIES
For the most fervent Catholics this is absurd, but for many Italians it has no ‘weight’ at all. They believe that religion has nothing to do with ‘revolt’ and, when it comes to anger, yes, they blaspheme! But, I ask you, where in the world does that not exist, isn’t it? However, this does not always happen, not everywhere, so this is half-true!
10) What to know about Italian habits – ITALIANS AND THE IMPOLITENESS
To end our list: they prefer you to fart rather than burp! Absurd of the absurdities of all the absurdities I’ve heard about Italians! They DETEST impoliteness and doing, both, will leave you in trouble, that is: it is LIE!
