What to do in Venice when it rains?

Venice is a VERY peculiar city! In the last few days it has been highlighted in the newspaper headlines for its record of the Acqua Alta phenomenon, which you can learn more by clicking here, but Venice, even in the rainiest months, follows its normal routine: open shops and restaurants, museums, churches too ; transport functioning normally and no ‘alarm’. Both the residents and the city government are already used to the phenomenon and, last week, it was something really exceptional. But nothing to be alarmed about: this exceptional increase happens almost once a century, so you need not be afraid. Introduction

Rains in Italy between November and February are quite common and in all Italian regions; in some places it rains more, in others less, the fact is: it almost always rains! If the rain is not so strong, nothing that an umbrella or a raincoat will not solve (don’t forget your boots!), But if the rain is a little heavier, or very heavy: there is no way, you you’ll have to go somewhere ‘sheltered’ – if you dare to leave the hotel! When I am asked ‘what to do in Venice when it rains?’ I can think of several things and today I’m going to tell you what you can do in Venice when the rains come. Shall we know what to do in Venice when it rains? Also visit our section on Accommodation in Italy!

Important to Know

When the rains are VERY intense, the civil defense asks to avoid going through the city and public transport that runs through the canals is suspended for safety reasons! So, if you are in Venice and an alert is issued, follow the instructions, O.K.?! Stay at the hotel! The hotel staff will give you guidance, don’t worry! Check out our Section on Climate in Italy!

1) What to do in Venice when it rains? VISIT MUSEUMS AND CHURCHES

In this topic we need a little attention: depending on the height of the water, the museums and St Mark’s Basilica close, but it is worth remembering that this only happens as a LAST RESORT, if the city is impassable! Remember the Basilica is in the lower part of the city, so it is almost always the first area to flood when the water rises. Anyway, in case you have doubts if it is open or not, ask at the hotel front desk, they will be able to tell you precisely, O.K.?! Venice has a LOT of museum and everyone is VERY cool! The coolest museums * in the city are the Ca’Rezzonico, the Mocenigo Museum – typical Venetian fabrics and costumes, the Museum of Art History and the Naval Museum.

The City Star

Of course the star of the city is St Mark’s Basilica, and it is unmissable! Venice also hosts an Art Biennial and, during the period, it is possible to visit several works of art around the city; to find out when it will be the next one, you can access the official website of the Venice Biennale. On the website you can find the complete program, since there are several cinema shows as well. Another very special place to visit is the splendid La Fenice Theater! Historic, the theater is an impressive beauty!

Tip

  • Some museums offer a special guided tour for children! Inquire if you are with your little ones!

2) What to do in Venice when it rains? HAVE A SPECIAL COFFEE

One of the most different programs you can do in Venice is to visit a place called Torrefazione Marchi. It is a historic place, since it was founded in 1930 and still works, and offers a fantastic cafe! The place is super charming and the perfume of coffee is inebriant! Definetely, it is worth a visit!

3) What to do in Venice when it rains? TAKE A VAPORETTO TOUR

You may think: what an obvious thing! Not when it’s raining! To start, write down the coolest lines: line 1 and line 2, and this is where the “magic” happens! The journey of the traghetti lasts about 75 minutes, which is the duration of the ticket and they pass through all the most interesting points of Venice! Or even better, buy the ticket for the whole day by clicking here and enjoy getting to know as many places as possible !! When it is raining, it is a delight, since you can see almost the whole city without getting wet in a very creative way! Read the post: How to use the vaporetto in Venice!

4) What to do in Venice when it rains? LISTEN TO JAZZ!

Do you like Jazz? Venice has a very special place for lovers of this unique musical style! We are talking about the Venice Jazz Club. Just in case, make a reservation to visit the place, but be sure to do it! With very intimate and delicious jazz sessions, it’s the kind of place that jazz lovers are going to freak out about! The atmosphere is incredible and you can spend hours there without watching the time go by!

5) What to do in Venice when it rains? SPEND THE DAY IN THE LIBRARY!

Who doesn’t like a good book? In Venice you can visit one of the most beautiful in Italy, the Querini Stampalia Library. With incredible titles and in several languages, the library houses real jewels of world literature. There is also a very nice kids space for those with little ones and, speaking of them… take a look at the next topic! ; )

6) What to do in Venice when it rains? WITH KIDS? FOLLOW OUR TIPS …

Venice has playrooms totally dedicated to the little ones at two addresses: one is La Luna nel pozzo, located at Castello 450 and La cicala e la formica, in Cannaregio 3161, within the Parque di Villa Groggia. Entrance costs 10 euros, but the kids will have fun! They provide books, toys, puppets and everything else that keeps our loved ones focused and distracted! They will LOVE it! Tip

  • If you want to stay in bed all day under the covers at the hotel… DO NOT FEEL GUILTY! Venice is the type of city that offers us a multitude of programs for its tourists, but we know that when it rains, the city is not the most inviting to a walk in the open air, because with rain it is not the easiest city in the world to if you travel, then: throw yourself on the bed with no guilt! (I would do the same! hahaha).

Important to Know

Let’s reinforce it because it never hurts: PAY ATTENTION TO THE CIVIL DEFENSE WARNINGS OF THE CITY and keep in mind that, due to Acqua Alta, unfortunately it is not always possible to predict when the rain will come in full force, so be informed before leaving the hotel to the chosen destination, okay ?! Hotels I recommend in Castello Area

Castello is the largest of all the “sestieri” (neighborhoods) and has an incredible waterside for good walks, in addition to being full of cafes, bars and shops. They are not cheap places to stay, but it facilitates access to the most famous tourist spots and, with that, saves on transportation, as it is possible to do everything on foot!

Don’t want to stay on the island? No problems! Search for Mestre, Campalto or Favaro Veneto, which are the mainland cities of Venice and offer excellent accommodation options. A little further from Piazzale Roma, about 20 minutes by water transport, they do not have magnificent views from the bedroom windows, but it is ideal for those who want to save on accommodation.

Tips

  • The tip to save A LOT is to book your hotel in advance.
  • As we also mentioned: beware of excess baggage! It is very complicated to get around with large volumes in Venice because of the bridges, stairs and narrow streets.
