We must remember that, despite its modest size, Pisa has played a central role in Italian history, especially when the Maritime Republic dominated the Mediterranean trade routes. Today it is an important industrial center and brings together three of the most important universities in Europe, the University of Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore (“Normal High School”) and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies). Pisa is a city that impresses for its young and sparkling environment, but also for its architectural beauty and its traditions. So now let’s get to what really matters ??? We will know what to visit in Pisa in one day!

1) What to visit in Pisa in one day? THE PIAZZA DEL DUOMO

The nerve center of the city of art, Pisa, of course it is the incredible Piazza del Duomo (“Chatedral Square”), known as the “Square of Miracles”, built between the 11th and 13th centuries, and which brings together four monuments of great importance, so much so that they are recognized as Heritage of Humanity, by UNESCO, since 1987. Although it is obvious to say, the first thing to see in Pisa is, in fact, the Piazza del Duomo. It is where that some of the most representative monuments of the Pisan Romanesque style are concentrated.

2) What to visit in Pisa in one day? THE CATHEDRAL, THE CAMPOSANTO AND THE LEANING TOWER

You can admire the Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption, the Baptistery of St John, the Camposanto, and, of course, the famous bell tower, better known as the Leaning Tower. The Duomo is a wonderful example of the so-called Romantic Pisa, according to legend, here there is also the incense chandelier that Galileo Galilei observed to ‘draw’ the law of the pendulum isochronism, but the one seen today came after that.

About the Church

The church is a true masterpiece and testifies to the prestige and wealth achieved by the Maritime Republic of Pisa at the time of its greatest splendor. Separating the conquest, the Leaning Tower, the symbol of the city of Pisa. It is among the seven wonders of the modern world, which attracts the first look for its very steep inclination, but what is notable next is its simple architectural perfection with six levels of arcades, curved lines and white marble.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Baptistery

The Leaning Tower is actually a bell tower, which dates back to 1773 and is part of the architectural complex that is located in Piazza del Duomo (“Cathedral Square”). It is fifty-six meters high and consists of eight floors. To climb the tower there are three flights of spiral stairs, with 296 steps. Then there is the Baptistery, the largest in Italy, with 107.25 meters in circumference and absolute simplicity, the decorations, in fact, are minimal.

Camposanto

Finally, in the square, there is Camposanto, a monumental cemetery to explore, from the courtyard, full of wonders such as the Roman sarcophagi, valuable preparatory designs and large tombs in the side galleries. He recalls that Pisa is not just the Square of Miracles, it is almost an obligation to stroll along Corso Itália, through which you enter the Town Hall Square, with the Gambacorti Palace. Another place worth visiting is the Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knight’s Square), where the old Roman forum of the city used to be, and where, today, is the headquarters of the Scuola Normale Superiore.

3) What to visit in Pisa in one day? LUNGARNI

Another aspect to take into account, in Pisa, are the ‘lungarni’, which are the spectacular streets that line the Arno River. There is a strong connection between Pisa and the water. It could not be otherwise, since much of its fortune was built from the former Maritime Republic. A walk along these streets is unmissable. There are many palaces of the old lords, palaces of the past with views of the roads along the river; most structures, although inspired by the Renaissance, actually date from the Middle Ages and, anyway, they have been transformed over the centuries.

Medici Palace and the City Walls

Thus, the streets that border the river Arno, end up being the living room of the city. It is such a beautiful sight, so magnificent, that everyone wins. The best known part is the so-called ‘Lungarno Mediceo’, where the Medici Palace is located, which is now the seat of the City Hall. Finally, interesting and unmissable, are the city walls, still well preserved, with their large monumental gates, but one day it will not be enough to get to know them, so you will have to return to this beautiful Tuscan city.
