What to do in one day in Arezzo?

Hello! I hope you are all well! 🙂 Today we are going to talk about the beautiful Arezzo. Arezzo is the type of city that pleases everyone who visits: beautiful, charming, full of history, it is the type of city where everyone feels good and almost always wants to come back! So, without wasting time, let’s see what to do in a day in Arezzo? Itinerary for a day!  Here at Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia you make the trip of your dreams!!! ALSO: see our “Accommodation in Italy – Tips for your holidays!”

1) What to do in a day in Arezzo? VISIT PIAZZA GRANDE

The most busy spot in Arezzo (and one of the most beautiful places, in my humble opinion!) Is the Central Square, known as Piazza Grande (Great Square)! That’s where life happens! Surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants, it is charming! It is also there that duels (scenographic, of course!) of the Giostra del Saracino (“Carousel of the Saracene) take place. It consists of medieval duels (including period clothing and everything!) Between teams. How about taking a 3-hour Private Walking Tour in Arezzo? Click here to learn more!

The Duels and the Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo

The ‘duels’ always take place on the third Saturday in June and the first Sunday in September, it’s a unique experience! This is also where the Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo (Arezzo’s Antiques Fair) is held, which is the largest, best and most famous antique fair in Tuscany. It always happens on the first weekends, every month, especially on Sundays. I’ts very interesting!

2) What to do in a day in Arezzo? VISIT THE MECENATE ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

Another worthwhile visit is the Mecenate Archeological Museum, which is next to an amphitheater and is a jewel in archaeological terms in Italy. There are several items such as vases, relics and much more, not to mention that the place is delightful!

3) What to do in a day in Arezzo? VISIT THE CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral of Arezzo is unmissable! It is located at the top of the hill, close to the city fortress and gardens. Due to its privileged location, it is possible to see it from all over the city. Its construction began in the 13th century, but ended only in the 16th century; its entire facade was built in the 20th century. The Church is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Donatus, and it is a masterpiece of marble. The altar has a precious fresco, on the left which shows Mary Magdalene, and it also has the Ark of Saint Donatus, a work made in marble, from the 14th century.

4) What to do in a day in Arezzo? VISIT THE MADONNA DEL CONFORTO CHAPEL

It is also worth visiting the Madonna del Conforto Chapel, next to the north corridor, where there are five splendid terracotta made by Andrea della Robbia. Despite all the charms, what draws the most attention inside are the stained glass windows of the church. Make the most of it and visit the Prato gardens and the Petraca Monument, which are right behind the Cathedral. The view from the Passeggio del Prato call is breathtaking. Petraca, one of the parents of the Italian language, is portrayed in the beautiful sculpture, from 1928.

5) What to do in a day in Arezzo? VISIT FORTEZZA MEDICEA

Following until the end of the Passeggiata sul Prato path, there are the Roman remains of Fortezza Medicea, a fortress designed in the early 16th century that revolted against the Medici. It is not possible to enter the monument, as the site is undergoing an archaeological excavation!

6) What to do in a day in Arezzo? VISIT THE COMMUNALE PALAZZO

Continuing with the tour, visit the Palazzo Comunale, which has beautiful coats of arms on its facade. Finally, visit the Basilica of Saint Francis, which was erected in the 14th century. The Church is full of impressive works, but his most famous work is the frescoes that show 10 scenes, known as Leggende della Vera Croce (Legends of the True Cross), and were made among 1453 and 1464, in the Chapel of the Bacci family. The paintings depict the story of Christ and delight the eyes!
