Introduction

Florence has Etruscan origins and was ruled by the powerful Médici family from the early 15th century to the mid-18th century. The city is home to several beautiful cathedrals from very different eras and styles, but all impressive. It is also in Florence that there are priceless works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rafael, Donatello, among other important names. Florence, by itself, is a charming city, but its tourist attractions make it even more unique and authentic. Among the various monuments, churches, squares and other attractions, there are five which deserve to be highlighted and today we will know what they are.

1) What are the five must see places in Florence? UFFIZI GALLERY

Gallerie Degli Uffizi – Uffizi Gallery – Perhaps it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Florence. Entering there can be like a trial by fire, it is true, since the lines are huge and make us wait, but once inside, walking through its corridors, going up the steps that access the second floor (there are 141 steps) and watching the frescoes on the ceiling, everything will be much better and you will forget the world outside! Learn more about the Uffizi Gallery, clicking here!

Built to house offices, a theater and absolutely private spaces, which only the Grand Dukes had access to, in addition to members of the Medici family, construction began in 1560, under the (magical!) hands of Giorgio Vasari, who designed the Gallery to improve the Palazzo Vecchio Tower (“Old Palace” Tower).

Tips

  • There are three access doors to the Gallery and they can change the entry without prevoius notice, so, before entering the line, ask for information to know if you are in the correct entrance.
  • Another thing: I know that we see the photos showing an empty gallery, but, of course, it is not so, so be patient! If you notice that one of the rooms is very crowded, go straight ahead and come back later to visit it calmly, O.K.?!

Address

  • Piazzale degli Uffizi, 6 – Florence.

Schedules

  • Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:30 am to 6:50 pm. It doesn’t open on Mondays.

2) What are the five must see places in Florence? ACCADEMIA GALLERY

Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze – Florence’s Accademia Gallery – The Accademia Gallery is home to many very important works of art. This is where one of the most beautiful works of all time, David, by Michelangelo is located. David is one of the most famous works in the world and portrays the biblical hero with a detailed and impressive realism. The magnificent sculpture is 5.17 meters high and was originally commissioned by the city as part of a series of other statues that depict prophets and biblical heroes. Palazzo della Signoria (“Lordship Palace”)

David was actually commissioned to be used as decoration on one of the facades of Santa Maria del Fiore (St Mary of the Flower), but, after its completion, the sculpture was taken to the Palazzo della Signoria, seat of the government of Florence and was presented to the public on 8 September 1504. The image represents the freedom of civilians and David’s eyes are on Rome. In 1873 the sculpture was taken inside the Academy and a replica was placed in the square. In addition to its main attraction, the Gallery offers a range of incredible works of art by various artists. The rooms are full of beauty and the place is a field day for art lovers.

Address

  • Via Ricasoli, 58/60 – Florence.

Schedules

  • Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:15 am to 6:50 pm. It doesn’t open on Mondays.

3) What are the five must see places in Florence? MEDICI CHAPELS

Cappelee Medicee – Medici Chapels – The Medici Chapels are part of the monumental complex of the Church of Saint Lawrence, which was the family church while they lived in the Via Larga building, which today is Via Cavour. There is a mausoleum belonging to the Medici family. The first to be buried there, beside his wife, was Giovanni Medici, he was buried in Brunelleschi’s small sacristy. Later, his son Cosimo was buried in an underground crypt under the central altar and was made by Michelangelo and Buontalenti between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Main Chapels

The main rooms are the New Sacristy and the Chapel of the Princes, with independent access, through the back of the Church of São Lourenço. The project for the construction of the family tomb dates back to 1520, when Michelangelo started working in the New Sacristy, from the plan of Brunelleschi’s sacristy (which nowadays is called the Old Sacristy). The structure was completed in 1524 and is characterized by white walls and stone details.

Upon entering the back of the Church, it is noted that the Chapel is divided into three parts, the crypt, the Chapel of the Princes and the New Sacristy. In the Chapel of the Princes, it is possible to observe a large dome designed by Buontalenti, which dates from 1604, but it was only fully completed in the 20th century. Six Grand Dukes of the Medici are buried here. Everything in the chapel attracts attention: the sculptures, the spaces, the peace and the beauty!

Address

  • Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini, 6 – Florence.

Schedules

  • From Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:15 am to 1:20 pm. It doesn’t open on Mondays.

4) What are the five must see places in Florence? CATTEDRALE DI SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE

Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower) – The Cathedral of the city is of unparalleled beauty! The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower is the main church in Florence and it is the symbol of the city, being one of the most famous in Italy. When it was completed at the end of the 15th century, it became the largest church in the world, but it lost its post to the Church of Saint Peter in Rome and to the Church of Saint Paul in London. Find out more about Florence Cathedral by clicking here!

Nowadays it is the third largest in Europe. The construction of the Cathedral was ordered by Signoria in 1296, and ended only in 1436. The initial work was entrusted to the architect Arnolfo di Cambio and was interrupted several times over the decades. When the Brunelleschi dome was completed, it was finally consecrated by Pope Eugene IV on March 24th, 1436. The Church’s dedication to Saint Mary of the Flower took place in 1412.

The cathedral

The plan of the cathedral consists of a basilica of three naves welded to an immense triple cone that supports the immense dome of Brunelleschi, which is also the largest masonry dome ever built. Inside it you can see the largest surface ever decorated with frescoes: they are 3600 m², executed between 1572 and 1579 by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari and, despite all the paintings, it is a very simple interior compared to other Cathedrals in the world.

At the marble base, there is a panoramic terrace with a (beautiful!) View of the city which is 91 meters from the floor. The facade of the cathedral is in polychrome marble from the modern age and dates back to 1887. It was made by Emílio de Fabris and it is an important example of the neo-Gothic style in Italy. It is really an impressive beauty! There you can also visit the museum, the baptistery, the dome, the crypt and the campanile.

Tip

  • The times of the attractions are different, but it is possible to buy a single ticket for all areas!

Address

  • Piazza Duomo, 17 – Florence.

Schedules

  • Every day. Cathedral, from 10 am to 4:30 pm; Summit, from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm (reservation is mandatory); Baptistery, from 9:00 am to 10:15 am and from 11:15 am to 7:30 pm; Campanile, from 8:15 am to 7:00 pm; Crypt, from 10 am to 5 pm and the Museum, from 9 am to 7 pm.

Attention

  • The structure does not open on the first Tuesday of each month.

5) What are the five must see places in Florence? PALAZZO PITTI

Palazzo Pitti – The Pitti Palace was designed by Brunelleschi, despite the fact that it has never been proven, there are not even documents that state that he was responsible for the project. The fact is that the construction of this building was made in the second half of the 15th century and was commissioned by a merchant, Luca Pitti, who was a friend and ally of Cosimo de Medici.

Boboli Gardens

Its facade does not allow us to imagine all its internal splendor, including the magnificent Boboli Gardens, which are inside, in an open area. Eleonora de Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de Medici, bought the palace and during the next 2 centuries, it was remodeled and expanded to take on the shape we know today. The palace became the property of the House of Savoia in 1860, when Tuscany became one of the provinces of the Kingdom of Italy and King Vittorio Emanuele II used the Pitti Palace as a residence during the period when Florence was the capital of Italy.

In 1919, his grandson, Vittorio Emanuele III, donated the Pitti Palace to the Italian State and, thus, the Palace ended up being the headquarters of important museums of the city. It has several rooms and the works of art are of immense cultural value, in addition to being of great beauty and historical value.

Address

  • Piazza de ’Pitti, 1 – Florence.

Schedules

  • Galleria Palatina, Appartamenti Reali, Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Museo degli Argenti, Museo della Moda and del Costume – from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:15 am to 6:50 pm; Giardino di Boboli, Museo delle Porcellane, Giardino Bardini – every day, from 8:15 am to 4:30 pm (in November, December, January, February). And so, if you decide to breathe a less touristic air, a good choice could be to stay in Florence right outside the historic center, where hotel prices are cheaper and the most convenient solution if you come by car. Another possibility is to stay away, in some nearby town, and experience the silence of the wonderful Tuscan landscape, but in this case it is necessary to have a car.
