Our introduction

Milan breathes fashion and, consequently, shopping! The city brings together the world’s top fashion in several strategic points and all of them are extremely attractive. A good example of this is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II which is considered the first mall in Italy. Also read: Where to shopping in Milan?

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II dates back to 1861, when it began to be designed. The site took 12 years to complete and opened in 1877. It is a four-story complex named after the first king of Italy and houses luxury stores from all over the world. Click here and learn everything you need to know to Visit Milan.

The Galleria is considered the “living room” of Milan and due to its proximity to the La Scala theater, it was frequented not only by those who went to see the shows, but also by actors and artists. From the beginning, the first shops in this gallery were boutiques and elegant cafes. In fact, its elegance remains to this day and there is a rule for the stores present there: they must have the plates written in gold on a black background.

If you’re not a big fan of big crowds…

Avoid peak periods, which are usually on weekends – Saturday and Sunday, from lunchtime around 12:00. Also remember that malls have movie theaters, so it is quite common for malls to be fuller due to their opening hours – especially in the middle and late afternoon on weekends. How were shopping malls born in Italy?

Called“centro commerciale”, malls in Italy began to become popular in the 1970s, nearly 30 years after they became a US sensation. This “selling machine” was born in the USA at the hands of the architect Victor Gruen, in the early 1950s. That was when mass consumption began to gain strength and shopkeepers liked the idea of “concentrating” in one space.

However, there was a lack of structure and, thus, the idea of creating a place with parking, a variety of products and, why not, a food court? I don’t even need to say which formula worked, right?! And thus, malls were born!

Is it worth shopping in the malls of the Italian fashion capital?

It depends! If you take the sales period – from the first business day before Epiphany (January 6th) to March 1st, and from the first Saturday of July to the end of August – it could be VERY worth it! And yes! Sales in Italy are excellent and offer discounts of up to 70%! Remembering that, it is obvious that during these periods, the malls are crowded with people, and you will not always find what you are looking for, however, it’s worth the tour, even if it’s for a different lunch or dinner! Good to know…

During the sale period, some stores do not allow exchanges, so – if you want to buy clothes: try the item you intend to make sure it fits!

Are the prices the same as in the USA?

It also depends on what you’re looking for. Some Italian brands already have stores worldwide, but it is good to remember that some of them do not have the same price in some countries. My suggestion: research what you want to buy; check if the value practiced in your country is the same practiced in Italy, if it is, it’s not worth leaving there to buy here, right?!

What is worth buying?
