1) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? GENOA

If you want to get to know Liguria, you must start your journey through the main city, Genoa, which is a city rich in art, culture, fun and tradition. The “Porto Antigo” represents the best starting point to visit the city; a few steps from the “Porto Antigo” there is the Sottoripa area, one of the most fascinating areas of Genoa. At this point, I advise you to proceed towards the historic center, one of the largest in Europe. TIPS ON GENOA!

Attractions in Genoa

The heart of Genoa has a very thick artistic heritage; one of the stops you cannot miss is the Roman-Gothic Cathedral of San Lorenzo. Going up to the top of the street, we arrive at the Doge’s Palace, which in the past centuries was the Headquarters of the Government and is currently the basis of Genoa’s cultural life. After stopping to enjoy a great “focaccia” based on Genoese cheese and other local specialties, we head towards Piazza delle Erbe (“Herbs’ Square”), the real heart of the old city. And the famous and beautiful Aquarium of Genoa.

2) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? CAMOGLI

Another place that deserves to be known is Camogli, the city of lovers. A typical seaside town with tall houses painted in bright colors that fascinate the view.

Attractions in Camogli

The place still retains a fascination and a special atmosphere, particularly livable in the old port, placed between the 17th century pier and the fishermen’s houses. A very romantic atmosphere. Among the places to visit, there are many churches, starting with the Basilica Minore di Santa Maria Assunta (“Minor Basilica of St Mary of the Assumption”), overlooking the port and built in the 12th century. Among the civil architectures, we have the small Dragonara Castle, built in medieval times to protect the village and the entire coast. The bay of San Fruttuoso absolutely deserves a visit, where it is possible to reach via a steep path or by boat. Click here and discover Portofino and Camogli: self-guided tour and Bike.

3) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? PORTOFINO

A charming place is Portofino, which, with its famous square, can be considered one of the most exclusive locations in the world. In Roman times, Portofino was called “Portus Delphini”, due to the large number of dolphins that populated this part of the sea. A jewel of the Italian panorama, Portofino has always been a place frequented by important characters from the world of entertainment, culture and finance. PORTOFINO TIPS!

Attractions in Portofino

The colorful houses are arranged side by side, like the pieces of a precious mosaic, at the foot of a hill rich in lush vegetation around elegant villas. In the small retreat of the coast is the famous “little square”, the heart of Portofino, overlooking the port, populated by small fishing boats and luxury yachts. 4) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? PORTO VENERE

Another place that I need to mention is, without a doubt, Porto Venere; with its 4,000 inhabitants, it is the smallest city in the province. Among the monuments, it is worth mentioning the Parish Church of St Lawrence, Madonna Bianca Sanctuary, the Church of St Peter, the former convent complex of St Francis, the Varignano Fotress and the Doria di Porto Venere Castle. TIPS ON PORTO VENERE!

Attractions in Porto Venere

Porto Venere is considered the jewel of the Mediterranean, which appears at the southern end of a peninsula, which is separated from the coast by the rugged coastline of the Ligurian Riviera di Levante. Ideal place not only to spend your holidays, but to live all year round. This fascinating village owes its name to the temple dedicated to the goddess Venus, which, according to tradition, was born from the foams of the sea, which are not lacking at this point, as well as countless monuments, civil and religious buildings. Among the natural places in the territory of Porto Venere to visit, there are the famous sea caves.

5) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? CINQUE TERRE

Cinque Terre, the Five Lands. Those who visit these places will hardly forget the fascination and atmosphere that emanates from the five maritime villages of Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. There are 18 kilometers of coast that have a small paradise, sea without contamination, rocks, colors and scents of the land, the whole harmoniously united to the typical unparalleled buildings. Paths and paths with lovely panoramas. TIPS ON CINQUE TERRE!

UNESCO declared the Five Lands as a World Heritage Site. The first stage of the Five Lands is the village of Corniglia. Enjoy the spectacular panoramic view and take pictures of the land and the coast. Afterwards, a stroll through the delicious village, stop at a local bar for a glass of wine accompanied by a fresh “bruschetta”.

Bonus – VERNAZZA

Then there is the village of Vernazza, perhaps the most beautiful of the five villages, with a large open port, the Castle and the Church. Have free time to stroll, have lunch in one of the restaurants open on the seafront and then book a beautiful boat ride in Riomaggiore. Riomaggiore is the southernmost city in the Five Lands and its houses are built on the cliffs. Next is Manarola, one of the oldest villages in the Five Lands, where you need to explore the narrow alleys and pastel squares that bring beauty to the area. 6) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? PIETRA LIGURE

Along the coast of Ligurian Riviera di Ponente, a stop in Pietra Ligure, a medieval town rich with fascination, is mandatory. Strolling through Pietra conveys diverse, particular and exciting emotions to the tourist. The old village, in fact, offers all the suggestions of artistic and historical discovery, while the stroll by the sea offers a free opening to a generous and exuberant nature that you will hardly find anywhere else.

Attractions in Pietra Ligure

Mimosa and broom paint the vivid green of the Pietra walk yellow. The ruins of the medieval castle, from which the city derives its name, are still visible and seem to want to rise in the panorama that extends to the sea with strokes of blue and cobalt blue. Its central city is rich with beautiful churches that are located between the famous stone “alleys” that look almost like a labyrinth for the adventurous tourists. In the central square, we find the beautiful Cathedral of St Nicholas, which stands majestically in the square.

7) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit?  SANREMO

The seventh place we reserved was Sanremo, the city of flowers, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and famous Italian cities. Between the medieval roads, you will notice with immense stupor, the balconies full of flowers of every type and color, which we find all over the city. Via Matteoti is the main artery of the city, because it is rich in fancy shops and, in particular, because here is the famous Teatro Ariston. It is the theater where, in the last week of February of each year, the Italian Music Festival takes place.

Attractions in Saremo

One of the symbols of the city of Sanremo is, without a doubt, the Casino, a beautiful building in the liberty style designed by the French Ferret. Defined as the city of flowers, Sanremo hosts the Sanremo in Fiore event (usually on the last Sunday in January). During the day it is possible to watch a parade with spectacular flowered cars, created by the city of the Riviera dei Fiori (“the coast of the flowers”). As you already understood, in Sanremo there is no way to get bored, “Sanremo is always Sanremo”.

8) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? CHIAVARI

Chiavari is an activity tourist and commercial city of the Riviera di levante, a pearl of beauty located right in the center of the Tigullio Gulf, a pleasant stage for moments of rest during your tour of the Ligurian Riviera.

Attractions in Chivari

The old core of the city is characterized by narrow roads with arcades, which today form the commercial area, busy on fair days and which stand out for their peculiarity, the modern neighborhoods. Between its coastal strip and the surrounding valleys, Chiavari offers interesting itineraries for those who love to combine the fascination of sailing holidays on the Ligurian Riviera with the pleasure of a pleasant walk in nature to discover its interior.

The ninth destination we chose was Sassello, a village of just under two thousand inhabitants at 385 meters above sea level, surrounded by chestnut woods.

The Touring Club Italiano gave the orange flag, a symbol of high tourist-environmental quality. Sassello is, in fact, a city rich in history, art and nature with churches, historic buildings and folk traditions, making this place an ideal goal to spend a day close to culture and “relax”. A tip: before leaving the city you should buy the famous “amaretti di Sassello”, typical cookies with almond paste.

10) Which ten places in Liguria you absolutely must visit? ALASSIO

Now we visit the tenth locality of Liguria, Alassio. One of the chic and sought after destinations by Ernest Hemigway, which offers quality tourism, with fine sand beach, nightlife, entertainment and shopping.

Attractions in Alassio

In the past centuries, Alassio has been transformed into an important maritime town, since the last decades of the 19th century, when the locality was “discovered” by some rich English families. In a few years, it changed its face, with splendid villages, elegant gardens, Anglican church, the library, the station, numerous buildings, alleys and squares, all in a pleasant liberty atmosphere, which remains today.

Curiosities about Liguria

Before finishing this post, I could not fail to talk about some curiosities about Liguria.

What does Apple have to do with Liguria?

It is in Liguria that is the most complete Apple museum in the world! In Piazza De Andre, in Savona, a collection that includes practically all examples of Apple products: from PCs, peripherals, accessories and even parts they never put on the market. It’s very interesting!

The Invention of Jeans

Many think that jeans were a North American invention, but no. These famous pants have a history linked to Genoa and the merchant ships that used to pass through its port. Between 1500 and 1600, this fabric was used as a bag to seal sails or to cover goods transported on boats. After the first trips to America, this material started to be used as a garment for workers, and the rest is history!

The Focaccia

Focaccia is one of the most consumed typical dishes in Liguria and, one of the traditions of the locals, is to eat the focaccia by dipping it in cappuccino for breakfast. Have you already tasted it?

The numbers

In Genoa, street numbers are separated between red for commercial establishments and black for private homes. Sometimes looking for a number is a little tricky, because few know it!

The Historic Center

The historic center of Genoa is considered the largest in Europe: it develops in very characteristic alleys and forms a kind of labyrinth. It is not difficult to get lost there, but it is always delicious, as the alleys are beautiful!
