Village in Calabria hosts tourists for free: come to understand everything!

Today I will talk to you about a fantastic, unique and very special project that is being developed by the Calabrian community of Parenti, located in the province of Cosenza. Well, last week, the mayor of Parenti, Donatela Deposito (by the way, I take this opportunity to publicly thank her!) invited me to make a brief visit to the city and, there, she kindly introduced me to the newest project of the city: Sei Ospite a Parenti (You are a guest in Parenti). Did you like the idea? Are you curious? I’ll explain it to you on the way! Shall we learn more? Here at Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia you make the trip of your dreams !!! Introduction

It is an unprecedented project in the region and consists of receiving visitors, and hosting them, for free. I beg your pardon? So it is! The idea is to make Parenti a reference in the Sila Park region and, thus, make tourists live the most authentic experience of life living as and with the locals

The city is very small and has about 2,000 inhabitants and, for that reason, it is an endless tranquility, which will make the ‘peace and love’ gang go crazy for this place! Parenti is just 32 km from Cosenza and has a great structure for those who want to spend unforgettable days, in the best ‘slow-motion’ style.

Shall we understand the project?

The Municipality of Parenti launched the “Sei Ospite a Parenti” project, with the aim of starting a tourist activity in the Parenti area and the cities that surround it. You can stay, for free, in a house in the historic center, that is, very well located, with capacity for up to 10 people and stay for a maximum period of 10 days.

Details are still to be defined by Parenti’s comune (you can follow updates here!) and they plan to start the project in the coming September. What I can say, according to information from the mayor, is that one of the rules will require tourists to eat at the restaurants indicated by the city hall as well as adhere to at least one of the tourist routes proposed by them.

The choice of houses that will receive tourists was also strategically thought out: the village’s objective is to ‘shake up’ the place and revitalize the streets of the historic center and, above all, create a demand for tourists who will arrive throughout the year, not only during the summer.

It is a unique, unprecedented project, as we mentioned before, and it is ideal for those who want to escape from the big tourist masses.

Why is the project important?

Because the project is not intended to benefit only the community. The project wants to introduce tourists to Calabrian life. The calm, tranquility, friendship that exists in villages with few inhabitants and authenticity of the region of Calabria.

  • Some southern Italian cities still seem to live in the past and, with the exception of some more famous and bustling cities, life here is very ‘slow’: everything is done in a calm, unhurried, ‘handmade’ way, and with great care.
  • The hospitality offered by little-known cities is fantastic! You won’t find luxury or super famous attractions, and you’ll hardly come across a VIP character on the streets: and that’s the goal! Leave the rush and the big movement behind.

If you are with children, or are passionate about nature: consider this project with affection! Remember that Italy does offer us splendid attractions! Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice… but it also offers us little-known attractions and truly magical places!

IMPORTANT:

I advise against this initiative for those who don’t like a more peaceful life, or those looking for tourism in busy cities; the same goes for those who prefer a classic tourism. I advise it, indeed, for anyone looking for authenticity, those who want to get to know the true meaning of ‘dolce vita all’italiana’!

Parenti is within the Sila Park, which is one of the largest parks in all of Europe. The air is pure, the nature is almost untouched and the possibilities for a unique vacation are impressive! To get to know the Park area better, I invite you to visit this website! We have a post about Parenti here on the blog; I invite you to get to know the city better by clicking here!

TIPS:

  • Parenti offers two very important festivals for the city: the Potato Festival and the Cart Race! The potato party has been taking place since 1980 and is always held on the last Sunday in August. The “Cart Race” usually takes place on the third Sunday in September and is a very fun competition among locals! If possible, organize your trip during this period! You will not regret it!
