Our Introduction

“I remember as if it were today the first time I saw the Coliseum. I arrived in Rome at night, I was tired and trying to understand what the excited taxi driver was saying, in a mixture of Italian and English, when the monument simply appeared in front of me. So it was true! I was right there, in the Eternal City, fulfilling the dream of meeting the one that had been the center of the greatest empire in the world.

It was stepping on those orange streets to fall madly in love, and forever. I’ve been back a few times, and I want to keep coming back, both to revisit my favorite spots and to discover new treasures. They say one life is not enough for Rome, and I have to agree. In this post, I’ll tell you my Top 10, the things that make me happy in Rome”

1) TOP 10 Rome with love COLISEUM

The Colosseum, obviously! It is the city’s main postcard, having been the center of Roman life for a long time, with its gladiator fights and grandiose spectacles. You have to see it from all angles, and at different times, as the light changes beautifully throughout the day. For me, the sunset is the most special moment, dyeing the place golden – a spectacle that will stay in my heart forever. It is worth going inside and exploring the amphitheater, if possible with a guide (or audio guide) so you can better enjoy the trip through the time tunnel.

The Colosseum ticket entitles you to visit the Palatine and Roman Forum, impressive ruins of the political heart of the ancient capital of the world. It is worth setting aside a day to explore – without haste – this historic complex. Also read How can I visit the Colosseum underground?

2) TOP 10 Rome with love – TREVI FOUNTAIN

The Trevi Fountain, the most beautiful in the city. Look, what’s not lacking there are beautiful fonts, huh? I still remember the emotion of seeing it for the first time, after turning a corner. The setting for so many movies, it’s even more charming in person. Yes, you have to throw the coin to visit the town again! I did that and came back in the same year, try it! Again, the place is worth seeing day and night.

My suggestion

  • Arrive during the day, flip the coin, take several photos (selfie paradise, lol) and then choose a restaurant nearby, with a table on the sidewalk, and enjoy a nice pasta and vino. Take your time, enjoy the meal and enjoy the people coming and going. Don’t order dessert. At dusk, go back to Fontana, buy a gelato (any kind, don’t worry: they’re all tasty) and see the magic that the lights do to the place. Know here Must-see places for aperitif in Rome

3) TOP 10 Rome with love PANTHEON

The Pantheon is one of the best preserved marvels of Roman architecture. It was once a temple of pagan gods, today it is a Catholic church, in which personalities such as the artist Raphael and King Vitório Emanuelle II are buried. The oculus in the ceiling makes the sunlight move through the interior, marking the passage of time. When it rains, the water enters and reaches the ground as a delicate veil of drops, quickly drained by the subtle drainage system of the place. My favorite place to say a prayer thanking life.

4) TOP 10 Rome with love – VATICAN

The Vatican, with the ‘combo’ Sistine Chapel + Piazza San Pietro + the Pope. An impressive place whether you are Catholic or not. Everything is big, beautiful, rich there. The museum has many rooms full of wonderful works – buy the ticket online for the Vatican Museum + Sistine Chapel, for the first time, and arriving there, go against the flow of tourists, going straight to the Sistine Chapel, with the magnificent paintings by Michelangelo on the ceiling. That way, you have a better chance of avoiding the crowds that jostle to admire the place where the Popes are elected during conclaves.

A little more about the Vatican and its attractions

How many hours of work did the genius take, hanging from the scaffolding, to produce one of humanity’s masterpieces. The piazza, designed by Bernini, makes us feel like an ant, given its size and beauty. The sensation only increases when entering the Basilica, with Michelangelo’s Pietá and Bernini’s Baldacchino, among so many masterpieces, in a kind of overdose of beauty and grandeur. There is also the statue of Saint Peter, in bronze, with its foot worn out by the thousands of people who pass by in search of blessings. Pope John Paul II, now a saint, is buried in the Basilica. In the crypt, under the basilica, is the tomb of Saint Peter, the stone on which the church was built”. If you are there on a Wednesday or Sunday, you will be able to see the Pope in the piazza – a blessed energy circulates there, full of faith and gratitude.

5) TOP 10 Rome with love TRASTEVERE

Cross the Tiber River to explore the charming neighborhood of Trastevere. There, after getting lost in the alleys, choose one of the many restaurants and mangia che te fa bene – they say that real” Roman food is eaten there, with very attractive prices. After all this eating, it’s worth stopping by the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere to ask forgiveness for the sin of gluttony (which, in Rome, will be repeated to exhaustion). I also tell you The 10 best restaurants in Trastevere

6) TOP 10 Rome with love VILA BORGHESE

Do the double park + museum” in Villa Borghese. The galleria has works by Bernini, Caravaggio and Raphael, among others. Compared to the others, it’s small and compact, easy to explore, without that oh my God, I can’t see everything” feeling that the Capitolini and Vatican Museums give. You need to buy tickets in advance, because the number of visitors is controlled (oh, glory!). The gardens are beautiful, an oasis in the middle of the city. Ticket to Borghese Gallery.

7) TOP 10 Rome with love PIAZZA NAVONA

Enjoy delicious drinks in Piazza Navona. The place is always very lively, full of artists exhibiting their paintings (a nice souvenir of Rome, by the way). Choose a restaurant (table on the sidewalk, per favore!) and toast to the joy of living – and being in Rome – with an aperol spritz or a nice glass of wine. Ah, that’s where my second favorite fountain is, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (four rivers), by my sculpture crush, Bernini.

8) TOP 10 Rome with love CHURCH SANTA MARIA IN COSMEDIN

Visit the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. An interesting contrast to the giant, luxurious basilicas of Rome. Small and almost without decorations, ideal for a few moments of silence and peace. In front of you, in yet another typically Roman contrast, the Temple of Hercules. And, at the entrance of the church, the famous Bocca Della Verità, a figure carved in marble that, they say, bit the hands of liars – that’s right, a medieval lie detector. Tourists line up to take a picture with their hands over their mouths. Yes, I put my hand. No, I didn’t get bitten.

9) TOP 10 Rome with love THE FOOD

Mangia che fa bene! Italian food is one of the best in the world, generous, colorful and very, very tasty! It has something for all tastes and budgets, from street food to sophisticated restaurants. And, look, even when it’s bad, it’s good, because Italians know how to spice up life. Pizzas, pastas and, of course, gelatos, restore your strength after endless wanderings around the city. I’m one of those people who likes to follow my intuition when choosing the place to eat. If there’s a table on the sidewalk, it’s charming and the dishes are beautiful (yes, I’m one of those people who look at someone else’s plate, lol), I’ll stick around. If I love it, I’ll come back. If not, just dance away in tarantella rhythm. There is no shortage of options there. Discover all the Typical foods you must try in Rome

10) TOP 10 Rome with love – “DO NOTHING…”

Dolce far niente. That’s right, doing nothing…Rome is a city with a maddening pace, always on the move, with chaotic traffic and lots of people (one of the most visited cities in the world, right loves?) vying for space on the orange streets. There’s a lot to see, a lot to do, but I love taking breaks to watch life – and Italians – go by.

It can be in a restaurant with a table on the sidewalk, having a glass of cold white wine, or in front of the Coliseum, on the wall itself, waiting for the sun to end the day, or on the steps of Piazza Spagna, with a soundtrack by street musicians that are always around, or at the fountain in front of the Pantheon, sipping my 10th gelato of the day and thinking about how many stories have happened there since when the Roman emperors decided in Rome the fate of the empire. Feel, watch, listen, live Rome.
