A little bit of Sicilian history
Sicily has always been a privileged destination, mainly because of its strategic position that served as a “home” for various civilizations, which made its historical heritage become very rich. In 735 BC, the first Greek settlers arrived on the island and, with this, caused the withdrawal of the Phoenicians from western Sicily. In 265 BC, the Romans arrived in Messina and, under their rule, Sicily was divided into provinces and became the “granary” of the empire. After the Gothic-Byzantine war of 552 A.D., the island was incorporated into the Roman Empire as a peripheral province until the 9th century and from 827 onwards, the Arab invasion of the island began, from Mazara del Vallo to Taormina. From here, Sicilian history begins to flourish and Palermo becomes the capital of the Emirate of Kalibi.
Civilization
In the Val di Noto and Val Demone area, however, the Greco-Latin civilization remains. In 1061, the Normans conquered Sicily and Ruggero d’Altavilla was crowned king of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily. In the meantime, the struggle for power made Sicily lose some of its luster; only with the Treaty of Utrecht, of 1713, the end of the Spanish kingdom made Fernando IV of Bourbon, king of Naples, unite the two Sicilies and, finally, abolish the feudal privileges in 1812. With the revolutions of 1848, the government Bourbon went to the ground, in the movement led by Garibaldi.
Migrations
After several disastrous events, Sicily begins to decline and migrations from Sicily to America begin, mainly because of the economic crisis. In 1948, Sicily became autonomous and, years later, thanks to tourism, Sicily regains all its splendor, presenting visitors with priceless cultural heritage. Furthermore, the island became a major agricultural producer, which contributed to its financial stabilization. In this paragraph you haven’t read even half the story of this incredible region, but you can already get an idea of what you will find there!
