Introduction

Cinque Terre offers us nature, sea and unique beauty. Strolling there, among woods, cliffs, Mediterranean brushwood and vineyards, stopping to rest in the small villages and photographing every angle, with its multicolored houses, is the ideal tour for those who love sea and mountains and want to ‘divide’ that passion in the same place. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – next to each other – the famous ‘Percorsi’ (paths), can confuse their visitors, as there are several options with different routes. However, once you know the territory, it is possible to organize and walk peacefully for all cities, because it is not at all difficult to understand how the paths work and where they take us! Find out here how to get to the Cinque Terre from Florence?

Tip

  • The Cinque Terre National Park offers walking routes for different levels: from beginners to more difficult paths, dedicated to “professionals”. Whatever your chosen path is, for safety reasons, NEVER, NEVER, under any circumstances, leave the marked trail, OK?

Important to Know

Attention to the demarcations of the trails present in the park! There are some CLOSED sections; the colors that indicate the trails and their respective difficulties are as follows:

  • Tourist route: light blue.
  • Path for excursions: green.
  • Experienced : light orange.
  • Closed: black.

Routes

As there are countless possibilities of routes, we chose the three most beautiful (and simplest) so that your tour is delightful, pleasant and with no great difficulties!

Good to know

  • Before leaving, remember to wear comfortable clothes and suitable shoes. In addition, remember to bring water, to hydrate yourself during the tour, and use sunscreen, especially if you are traveling during the summer!

Warning

  • Some trails and / or stretches are expected to be closed until 2021, because cities are revitalizing their trekking areas to offer their visitors more convenience and safety.

1) The most beautiful trails in Cinque Terre: BLUE PATH

One of the most famous trails in the country! The Blue Path runs ALL the coast that bathes the Cinque Terre and connects ALL the villages: from Riomaggiore to Monterosso al Mare, passing through Corniglia, Manarola and Vernazza. It is one of the most accessible paths and offers incredible panoramas! It also offers excellent tourist facilities, with strategically located bars and restaurants.

Itinerary

The route from Riomaggiore to Monterosso is about 12 km and the maximum altitude is 200 m. The stairs here add up to about 2 km, and the rest of the path is formed by the Via dell’Amore boardwalk, along with small internal roads in the villages. This is path No. 2.

Good to know

  • Transit on route 2 is subject to the payment of a ticket (daily) whose cost varies depending on the number of sections open, around 5-7 euros.

Attention

  • THERE ARE CLOSED STRETCHES ON THIS ROUTE, DUE TO REVITALIZATIONS! Check the map before leaving or check with the locals who will be able to inform you of the current situation on the route.

2) The most beautiful trails in Cinque Terre: THE STRADA DEI SANTUARI

The Strada dei Santuari (“Road of the Sanctuaries”) is an old road and one of the most traveled by tourists. Its great strength is cultural, as it is the path connecting the five sanctuaries of Cinque Terre. They are:

Riomaggiore – Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero:

Follow path number 593V (former 3A). It is 3.5 km long and the journey time is one hour. The exit is close to the Riomaggiore parking lot, on the upper part (Lavaccio). For a long stretch, the route follows the Riomaggiore canal in parallel, and there begins the ascent through the vineyards until reaching the sanctuary, which is surrounded by a meadow and pine trees. Journey distance: 3.5 km.

Manarola – Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health:

To get here, follow the path number 586 (former 6D). The exit is next to the Manarola parking lot, where you will find the barrier at the beginning of the ZTL zone. Then, go up the valley keeping to the right of the Groppo stream. At the exit, the trail that reaches an altitude of 268 meters begins, where path n. 6D is. Keep left and continue in the direction of Volastra. From Volastra, always on the left, through a long staircase, you reach the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute (Our Lady of Health). Journey distance: 2 km.

Corniglia – Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace:

To reach the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie (Our Lady of Grace), also called the Sanctuary of Saint Bernardine, depart from Corniglia, close to the parking lot, using the SVA trail (former n.2); from there, head to Prevo a San Bernardino, or take the road to Case Fornacchi. Following the provincial road, you will reach the intersection with path 507 (former n.7) where you will find the Sanctuary (from there you can already see the fountain!). Journey distance: 3 km.

Attention

  • Path 507 A (former n.7), which runs from Vernazza to San Bernardino and, from here to the Sanctuary, i s CLOSED INDEFINETELY!

Vernazza – Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Reggio (Our Lady of Reggio):

Leaving Vernazza on the panoramic and paved trail n. 508 (former n.8), you will find the exit near the train station, from where the road to the cemetery, which goes around, and then the stairs, follow. It is one of the steepest trails, but also one of the most beautiful in Cinque Terre. Follow along the ridge towards the east and, don’t worry, the path here is paved and corresponds to the route of Via Crucis. On the way, you can still see the chapels of Via Sacra and the church of Saint Bernard. Journey distance: 2 km.

Attention

  • Trail 581 (former n.8A) Reggio – San Bernardino has been closed since 2016 with no plans to reopen.

Monterosso – Sanctuary of Our Lady of Soviore:

Use path n. 509 (former n.9) leaving Monterosso, near the end of Via Roma. Go through the woods until you find the road and, as you progress, you can see some chapels on Via Crucis and the chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Another 200 meters and you arrive at the sanctuary. Journey distance: 2.5 km.

Via dei Santuari is a half-hill route and can be covered on foot, by bicycle or by mule. In direct contact with nature, the path is very simple and crosses small towns. If you want to immerse yourself in the life of the inhabitants of Cinque Terre, this is the perfect route!

3) The most beautiful trails in Cinque Terre: PANORAMIC MANAROLA

An excellent alternative to the Blue Path is the Panoramic Maranola . This path connects Manarola to Corniglia and is in the middle of the coast, offering us an impressive panoramic view! The journey takes about two hours and, to travel it, depart from Manarola and use the path number 506. Let’s face it: it is tiring, but nothing that takes away the will of those who have a minimum of breath and want to have an incredible view from the coast. Passing here, you will find the charming city of Volastra, which features a very interesting church. From here, take path number 586 to Corniglia, while admiring the landscapes (breathtaking!) That appear in front of you!

BONUS: Path of Liguria or Alta Via Ligure

In this way, you practically cross the whole of Liguria. It is a very long journey, which starts in Lerici and goes to Ventimiglia, obviously including all the towns of Cinque Terre, but instead of the sea, our constant companions are the mountains. The Apennines of Liguria offer a beautiful scenery, and very fresh, also ideal during the coldest seasons. Remember to walk in the mountains requires care and the terrain here is very rugged, so be careful, okay? TIP: this route is recommended only for those who already have experience with trekking! If not, you can request a guided tour!
