1) The most beautiful panoramic views of Florence: DOME OF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MARY OF THE FLOWER

How not to start with this jewel? To get to the top of the city’s iconic Cathedral, you have to climb 463 steps and, although it is not a very easy path, the 91 meters high pays every minute of effort! The famous dome is a unique architectural work in the world, and its design belongs to the renowned Filippo Brunelleschi. Click here to learn more about the Florence Duomo!

A little more about the Cathedral

The cathedral was built between 1420 and 1436 and has an almost indescribable, magical, divine beauty! The path to the top offers you the chance to pass between the two domes that compose the structure and to be able to look inside the cathedral, just below the frescoes by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari, which idealized made between 1572 and 1579. O ticket costs 18 euros, and is valid for 72 hours. With the same ticket, you can also visit the Giotto’s Belfry, the Baptistery, the Crypt of St Reparata and the Opera del Duomo Museum. Book the ticket through the official website click here! Alternatively, CLICK HERE FOR WEBSITE IN ENGLISH!

2) The most beautiful panoramic views of Florence: GIOTTO’S BELFRY

Taking advantage that we are already very close and with the same ticket, how about getting to know the view of Giotto’s Belfry? On the south side of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, this gem is 85 meters high and 414 steps. Giotto started the construction Giotto in 1334 and Francesco Talenti completed it in 1359. All covered in white, green and pink marble, the belfry is decorated with bas-reliefs and sculptures of great artistic value, replicas in fact, because the originals are today stored in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (which you can visit with the same ticket!). The view of Florence and the dome from here is impressive! Where is it? Piazza del Duomo.

Tip

  • If you get too tired after climbing the dome of the Cathedral, you can visit the belfry the other day! Remember that the ticket is valid for 72 hours.

3) The most beautiful panoramic views of Florence: RINASCENTE TERRACE

The view from the Rinascente Terrace is for lovers, especially for the dome of the Cathedral! From here, you have a privileged view of Brunelleschi’s masterpiece! In this area you will find several bars with views of the Cathedral – each one offers a more beautiful view, I confess that it is difficult to choose – and to get there, just take the escalator. Where is? Piazza Della Reppublica.

4) The most beautiful panoramic views of Florence: PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO (MICHELANGELO SQUARE)

Perhaps it is one of the most famous sights in the city. From the top, on the other side of the Vecchio Bridge, you have a fantastic view of Florence: Cathedral, Arno River, bridges and much more. Architect Giuseppe Poggi designed the site in 1869, when Florence was still the capital of Italy. Here you will find a large terrace on the hill south of Florence, above the San Niccolò neighborhood. It is called Piazzale Michelangelo because the space is dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti and, in the center of the square, you can admire a replica of David made in bronze. Where is it? You can walk from Lungarno: go to Porta San Niccolò and, from there, follow the pedestrian path that leads to Piazzale Michelangelo, about 15 minute walk.

Good to know

  • People, at the time just before sunset, it gets CROWDED, especially during high season! So, schedule yourself!

5) The most beautiful panoramic views of Florence: SAN MINIATO AL MONTE

If you want to go beyond Piazzale Michelangelo, from there you can go to San Miniato al Monte, where you will also find one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in the city. As it is one of the highest points in Florence, it is obvious that the view from here is also breathtaking! Climb the stairs of the church while looking at its facade and, at the top, turn around to admire the beauty behind you! Where is it? Via delle Porte Sante, 34.

Florence has much more

Obviously, it would be impossible to list all places with views of Florence: there are hotels, bars, restaurants and many others, so we have put together the top five so you can enjoy incredible panoramas of this unique city!

Curiosity about Florence

Do you know why the name Florence? Florence, in Italian corresponds to ‘Fiorenza’ (flowering) in the period of maximum ‘flowering’ of the city, in the middle of the second millennium after Christ. Fiorenza, in turn, comes from the Latin Florentia, a city founded by the Romans. The foundation of Florentia dates back to the spring of 59 BC, when the city ‘flourished’ and, therefore, until today, we call it Florence (Firenze). Always remembering that the symbol of the city, quite rightly, is a fleur-de-lis.

In the Historic Center (Old Town), is really easy to admire all the main attractions of the city very easily. The old town of Florence corresponds to the oldest and most beautiful part of the city. If you want to stay in the real heart of Florence, choose hotels in the central areas of Piazza Santa Croce, Ponte Vecchio, Cathedral, Gallery of Offices, etc.

Hotels that I recommend in Santa Maria Novella

Another interesting neighborhood to stay is Santa Maria Novella. This is a particularly exclusive area because of the proximity to the station (great if you want to do a lot of tours leaving from Florence) and the famous Church of Santa Maria Novella, a very important reference in Florence.

Another economic possibility, where you can stay in Florence, is Campo di Marte; in this area there are several well-equipped and affordable hotels. It is a quiet and charming residential area in Florence, well connected to the historic city center by public transport. Campo di Marte has its own train station where several regional and high-speed trains stop, with which you can easily reach other Tuscan cities and major cities in Italy. It is a great choice if you have rented a car too.

Hotels I recommend outside the Historic Center

And so, if you decide to breathe a less touristic air, a good choice could be to stay in Florence right outside the historic center, where hotel prices are cheaper and the most convenient solution if you come by car. Another possibility is to stay away, in some nearby town, and experience the silence of the wonderful Tuscan landscape, but in this case it is necessary to have a car.
