The best round trips from Florence

Florence is an excellent city to be chosen as a base! It is well located, has great travel options to all of Italy and, of course, it is beautiful! If you chose Florence as your base city and would like to visit places close to the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, this post was made for you! Let’s get to our post of the day: the best round trips from Florence. Here at  Your Travel to Italy with Ana Patricia  you make the trip of your dreams !!! ALSO: see our  “Accommodation in Italy – Tips for your holidays!”

Introduction

What to talk about Florence? It is practically a city that needs no introduction, but many things come to mind when we talk about this fantastic city: its Cathedral, with the incredible Dome, Vecchio Bridge, Davi, by Michelangelo, and many others. Florence is a city, in fact, UNIQUE!

Florence is beautiful and requires time to get to know it. Rich in history and culture, it offers endless possibilities for tours and, best of all, most of it is concentrated in its historic center, which makes it easy to tour on foot. In this list, we have put together some of the best round-trips from Florence, as there are a multitude of options and it would be impossible to list everything in one post! Also read, how to go to Florence from Rome?

Golden Tips:

  • If you are going to Italy and have chosen Florence as your base city, I advise you to choose a hotel close to train stations; however, it is important to know that many places, especially in the interior of Tuscany, require another means of transport to be reached, and the car ends up becoming essential. If you decide to travel by car, I will give you one more tip: be aware of the ZTLs, especially if your hotel is central. Check out our section Driving in Italy!
  • When we talk about back and forth, consider that the ideal back and forth is the one that, considering the travel times – combined – are less than, at most, 4 hours (two to go and two to return). Trips with a travel time of more than 4 hours end up not being worthwhile, because, in addition to having some unexpected circumstances, you may have little time in the destination city and need to do everything in a hurry, which I do not advise.
  • The trains that operate the mentioned sections are from Trenitalia and Ítalo and you can get tickets online and save a lot by buying tickets in advance.

Suggestion

  • If you prefer not to rent a car, but want to visit locations where we need a car to get to, I advise you to hire a private transfer. Wherever you can, take the train: it is fast, efficient and safe! Visit our section Traveling by Train!

1) The best round trips from Florence: CRETE SENESI

Do you know those postcard landscapes? They are here! Crete Senesi is considered one of the most beautiful, photogenic and romantic places in the world, not only in Italy. Located in the heart of the province of Siena, it is ideal for visiting by motorbike or car.

But what are the Crete Senesi?

There are hills and woods, including some villages, that wind along the roads in the interior of Tuscany. They include Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d’Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d’Asso. The surroundings of this area are also spectacular! Which to visit? I suggest Asciano, with its historic center; as they are small, small towns can be visited ‘in order’, or not, but it is possible to visit more than two or three in the same day. San Giovanni d’Asso, Montalcino and Rapolano Terme also leave nothing to be desired. Crete Senesi is 1h30 from Florence by car.

Gold Tip

  • I will show you 3 wonderful places to take splendid photos: the first one is on the Leolina road, which is between Siena and Asciano; another magnificent point is Poggiarone de Santa Caterina, in Asciano, and the last point, but no less incredible, is the road that leads to Baccoleno Agritourism.

2) The best round trips from Florence: FROM BOLGHERI UNTIL CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI

From Bolgheri to Castagneto Carducci by bicycle – Do you like cycling? So this suggestion is for you! You can drive from Florence to Bolgheri (read here: Bolgheri and the famous Tuscan Sassicaia wine) and, from there, rent a bicycle to go to Castagneto Carducci following the Wine Route.

Go early and, already on a bicycle, pass through Viale di Bolgheri, which is framed by two rows of centenary cypress trees and is almost six kilometers long. Following the road, you arrive at San Guido di Carducci. When in Bolgheri, allow yourself to get inebriated by the aromas of the local wine bars. The landscape along the way is seductive, romantic and of unparalleled beauty. Take the opportunity to observe the vineyards, pines and breathe the fresh air of this very special place! Driving time from Florence: 1h45.

Important to Know

  • DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE! Choose to hire a private transfer so that you can travel with peace and security! Ah, this journey can also be done by car.

3) The best round trips from Florence: VIA DEL LATTE IN MUGELLO

Mugello is an area of the most beloved areas of Tuscany; this is where the famous Mugello race track is located and offers visitors interesting points indeed. When we think of this city, it is impossible not to remember its enogastronomy; mushrooms, tortelli, honey and so many other delicacies impress our palates in an almost magical way!

Mugello’s Milk

Among the many excellencies offered by Mugello, the milk stands out; the king of products in that area, no wonder it’s known as the ‘Mugello’s white gold’. Here, several important companies produce dairy products and are part of the Mukki consortium. Many of them are on Via del Latte, which is a path where you find 29 chosen farms that are part of Mukki. Here you can see all the production of milk, cheese and more. On the consortium link, it is possible to locate the companies and schedule a visit to learn about the entire production process and, if available, schedule a tasting. You can find the list with all of them by clicking here! Travel time from Florence, between 40 and 60 minutes.

4) The best round trips from Florence: CHIANTI SCULPTURES PARK

Do you like sculptures? Excellent! Do you like ‘different’ sculptures? Then you have found your ideal round trip! We are talking about the amazing Chianti Sculpture Park! The Park is one of those places that we would never even think could exist, but it does, and it is impressive! It is close to Castelnuovo Berardenga and brings together a permanent exhibition of fantastic installations and sculptures, all of them perfectly integrated with nature and on 7 hectares of wood.

A few more about the park

Created by the Giadrossi couple, the Park houses works of art by several international artists. It is a true open-air museum, which, together with the sounds of nature, offers us an unparalleled experience! The works present us with colors and interactivity and the idea of this place was to harmonize the art of Man and nature: it worked a lot! There are bars and restaurants in the area and you can enjoy lunch there! From Florence, it takes about 1h20 by car to reach the Park.

5) The best round trips from Florence: MONTERIGGIONI

How to talk about round trip from Florence without mentioning the incredible Monteriggioni? A few kilometers from Florence, we find this city, very loved by tourists and with a delicious atmosphere. If someone describes this place as a city taken from a fairy tale book, believe it, it is not an exaggeration!

Many directors have chosen the city to be the backdrop for their productions! Among these productions, scenes from films such as ‘Gladiator’, ‘The English Patient’ and so many others were shot here! The city was founded during the 13th century as a border stronghold with its rival, Florence, and still keeps most of the 13th century structures visible, which makes this place a city full of history and culture, with a unique panorama! The historic center deserves to be highlighted: it is poetry for our eyes! Are you in Monteriggioni? If you have time, stop by Siena, it is quite close! By car, leaving Florence, you can reach Monteriggioni in just one hour. Click here to find out which movies to watch before traveling to Italy!

It is a quiet and charming residential area in Florence, well connected to the historic city center by public transport. Campo di Marte has its own train station where several regional and high-speed trains stop, with which you can easily reach other Tuscan cities and major cities in Italy. It is a great choice if you have rented a car too.

Hotels I recommend outside the Historic Center

And so, if you decide to breathe a less touristic air, a good choice could be to stay in Florence right outside the historic center, where hotel prices are cheaper and the most convenient solution if you come by car. Another possibility is to stay away, in some nearby town, and experience the silence of the wonderful Tuscan landscape, but in this case it is necessary to have a car.
