First of all, you need to know that the name Trastevere derives from the Latin ‘Trans Tiberim’, which means across the Tiber, where the original nucleus of the city developed. Initially, the Trastevere district was inhabited by the less affluent social classes in Rome. Nowadays things have changed and this district is very popular not only for its nightlife and location, but also because it contains monuments, churches and great-value works of art. La Gattabuia

It is located in the heart of ancient Trastevere, in the middle of its characteristic labyrinth of alleys and small squares, and it is certainly among the most typical and historic in Rome. The restaurant was obtained from a splendid 17th century tavern, then used as a papal prison and recently renovated. Traditional Roman cuisine reigns supreme, local ingredients are the masters of the entire menu, which, however, also offers surprises for more modern and refined dishes and desserts. Easily accessible by car and public transport and thanks to the excellent service and reputation achieved. Here you will find the perfect carbonara! Walking around you cannot miss the famous Basilica di Santa Maria (Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere), in the square of the same name, with its mosaics and medieval frescoes, a real jewel. It portrays one of the most important churches in the city, where you can admire beautiful paintings inside, so it is a rare example of Christian iconography from the 4th century, Our Lady of Mercy or Madonna Theotokos. In the center of the square, you can admire one of the oldest fountains in Rome. Restored several times, it is fed by the Acqua Paola aqueduct, which, they say, quenched Trastevere’s thrist before the construction of the city’s water network.

Continuing the tour, we find another wonderful view of St. Giles Square, the home of the Museum of Rome in Trastevere, dedicated to the popular aspects of the city. Among other great markets there is the Escala, very characteristic, next to it is the Church that bears the name of the square, where there is also the old monastery of Discalced Carmelites.

The Roman world was also known thanks to a great poet in the vernacular, Trilussa, to whom a square has been dedicated which is right in front of the Sisto bridge, which connects Trastevere to the historic center of Rome. Among the most important churches to visit besides the Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere, is the Church of Santa Maria dell’Orto (“Our Lady of the Garden”), the Basilica of Saint Agatha, the church of San Francesco a Ripa (Saint Francis Assisi in Ripa Grande), which houses the stupendous sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini of Blessed Ludovica Albertoni, and the Church of Santo Giles.

Trastevere is undoubtedly one of the most lively and characteristic neighborhoods in the city, but if you really want to know, you have to try it out at night. And it is at dusk that the neighborhood is transformed to become the center of youth nightlife. Here you can enjoy entertainment and good food from the local restaurants, pizzerias, shops, stalls and small shops of all kinds.

The main attractions are Trilussa Square and the bars in the vicinity of Our Lady in Trastevere Square, popular at dawn.

Trastevere is also synonymous with good Roman cuisine, with dishes such as the famous Carbonara, grilled pasta, Bucatini Amatriciana and many other unmissable delicacies. Trastevere now also has an enviable cultural and natural outline, like the house of memory and history, a film festival during the summer, where Sergio Leone grew up, there is also the botanical garden and, finally, the walk through Gianicolo.

Whatever your choice, whether to spend the afternoon or evening in the neighborhood, one thing is certain, once you return home you will always carry in your heart the memory of Trastevere which is, as the Romans say, always‘ the heart of Rome ‘. (“Er core de Roma” – in Roman dialect).


How to get to Trastevere


To get to Our Lady in Trastevere it is advisable to rely on public transport, because the neighborhood is located in a restricted traffic zone, including on weekends and at night.

1) How to get to Trastevere? BY AIRPLANE

If you arrive in Rome on a flight from Fiumicino, after disembarking, take the train from the airport station. Trastevere is one of the stops and will take about 26 minutes. Also on the way back, you can take the Trastevere – Fiumicino train because it is the most convenient choice. The service is available in the morning, from 6:00 am until late, around 11:00 pm. The ticket costs 8 Euros and can be purchased in advance on the Trenitalia website. Even if you arrive on a flight from Rome Ciampino, you must first go to Roma Termini, and then take the bus to Trastevere.

2) How to get to Trastevere? BY TRAIN

If you arrive by train at Roma Termini station, there will be buses in the square in front of the station. Line 170 and line H go to Trastevere.
