Italian wines are famous all over the world and one of the regions most celebrated by wine lovers is, without a doubt, Tuscany. It is there that we find the area of the beautiful Val d’Orcia, but which localities does the Valley comprise? Starting in Montalcino and Montepulciano, the Val d’Orcia region is home to the following municipalities: Buonconvento, Castiglione d’Orcia, Pienza, Radicofani, San Giovanni d’Asso, San Quirico d’Orcia and Trequanda, as well as part of Abbadia San Salvatore, Chianciano Terme, San Casciano dei Bagni, Sarteano and Torrita di Siena.

What is a D.O.C. wine? D.O.C wines are those governed by a series of production rules, as well as the area of origin, which must be distinct and precise, and which may include sub-areas that delimit it to a particular location, village, winery or type of vineyard (types of grapes). When you find a label with the word D.O.C. on the label, you can be sure that you will have an official wine that has followed all the recommendations of the consortium that defines rules and standards of excellence to offer the final consumer an impeccable, top quality wine.
In this region, we find two traditional vineyards, typically Tuscan: those of Sangiovese, which offers the raw material for the wonderful red wine, and the vineyards of Trebbiano, which offer us impeccable white wines.
According to the consortium rule, D.O.C. wine is composed of at least 60% Sangiovese and the remaining 40% can be a blend of local grape varieties. Some of the typical (and famous!) wines of this region are:
- Orcia and Orcia Riserva (with a ruby red color that becomes a dark red with age, it has a fruity aroma, dry flavor, full of flavor and harmonious);
- Bianco d’Orcia (a white wine, which can have a yellowish hue and sometimes a little green, with a delicate, fruity aroma and a dry, well-balanced flavor);
- Orcia Rosè (with a pink tone, which varies between light and a little darker, presents a delicate and fruity fragrance, presenting a dry and fresh flavor);
- Orcia Sangiovese and Orcia Sangiovese Riserva (it is imposing, with a beautiful ruby red tone that becomes even darker with age, its aroma is vinous and can have a fruity background with a cherry or violet scent, offering us a dry flavor and full-bodied);
- Orcia Vin Santo (intense wine, straw yellow in color that can come close to golden or dark amber, giving us an intense and characteristic aroma, a dry flavor, but with sweet notes, velvety on the palate, and soft).
It is impossible not to mention that, in this production area of Orcia D.O.C., we find, of course, two renowned products: Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano. Both are produced at around forty local wineries and are two of the region’s most famous wines.

::::Poderi Boscarelli – This is one of the most celebrated wineries in the entire Val d’Orcia area, because it is a family business (and historic!) and is very well located in Montepulciano.
The Poderi Boscarelli winery is located in an important area for the production of Nobile DOCG wine, 300 meters above sea level, in a region that has a perfect climate to promote quality viticulture. Here we can still find several grapes such as Mammolo Canaiolo and Colorino, the international Merlot and Cabernet.
The Boscarelli made here has a production of around 100,000 bottles a year and in this cellar the past is present, as several ancient traditions are maintained to this day. The winery is located between hills, woods and gorges, its founder was Mr. Pasquale Forte, who, in 1997, decided to invest in the region by founding a company named after him. Passionate about wines, coming from Calabria, he opened the canteen without any pretensions, but with love and passion.
With 168 hectares of land divided into 19 hectares of vineyards, 23 of olive groves and the rest of arable land and woods, since 2011, the property also extends to the area between Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia, where there are 110 hectares of cultivated fields. .
