Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome?

Tourist Rome is already known to the public . When we search about ‘what to visit in Rome’, the traditional one always appears. Colosseum, Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica, etc. However, Rome has many more attractions than you think and many of them unknown to most tourists. Today we are going to talk about ‘Roman Rome’, incredible (‘secret!’) Places frequented, mainly, by the ‘owners of the house’ themselves. Divided into 12 neighborhoods, Rome can surprise us even by accident! Shall we get to know the ten least tourist attractions to visit in Rome?

1) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? NEIGHBORHOOD MOUNTAINS

Monti Neighborhood: it is, literally, next to the Colosseum and other great monuments, but the neighborhood, itself, is always ’empty’! The neighborhood looks like a tiny city in the middle of ‘nowhere’ and holds some precious Roman treasures. An aperitif over there at nightfall is delicious! Be sure to see the Madonna dei Monti Church, in the Main Square. The neighborhood is a reference for the most ‘cool’ people and its shops, full of art, attract all eyes. In Monti is also where several medieval towers are located. With a short walk, it is possible to see them all. The best of all? It is next to the Cavour metro station! It is worth the ride! 2) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? OLD VIA APPIA

Old Via Appia , a cheap tour full of history! Taking a walk or cycling through the old Via Appia is incredible and almost nobody does it! With several stretches where the original pavement is still visible, Via Appia was the main avenue in ancient Rome. Enjoy the ride and have lunch there: you will love it! To rent the bike, go to number 58 on Via Appia. Don’t forget to stop to admire the monuments. On the map available in the Visitors Center, there is all the information so you don’t miss any details! To learn more, click here! TIP: Don’t buy water, take a bottle because the park is full of fresh and clean drinking water sources!

3) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? GIANICOLO

For those who LOVE a panoramic view, this is one of the best places for that glimpse of Rome. The Gianicolo is a hill where Rome is shown in all its splendor! Fontanone (which is called Fontana dell’Acqua Paola) is located there and is considered one of the most beautiful fountains in the city. Trastevere district is, literally, one of the highlights of the city and deserves an unassuming visit. Do not miss visiting the beautiful Church of St Peter in Montorio; it will surprise you! How to get there? Walk around the neighborhood and follow the signs; if you prefer, go by bus: take line 870; the final stop is on Via Paola. Read also Is it worth it to use Uber in Italy?

4) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? ORANGE GARDEN

Giardino Degli Aranci: The wonderful Garden of Oranges is fantastic! With an incredible view of the Tevere River (Tiber, in English), it is a rectangular garden full of orange trees. The garden is inside the Sevelli Park, which was one of the most influential families in Rome. The fountain that is there was built in 1593 and is beautiful! Be sure to see the Lock of the Gate of the Knights of Malta (the ‘lock’) which has a magnificent view! Oh, nearby is also the Baths de Caracalla. How to get there: Circo Massimo metro station. 5) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? DOMIZIANO STADIUM

The Stadio di Domitian (Stadium of Domitian): First, I advance a tip. Take the tour with a guide! Things get completely different! The guides there are all archeologists and the explanations are sensational! An incredible history class! Although the explanations are in Italian, it is not difficult to understand and to be enchanted by each ruin, special corner and events that occurred there! The tours take place only on weekends and for more information, click here!

6) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? VIA MARGUTTA

Via Margutta: built to serve as an entry and exit service for the buildings on the parallel street, the elegant Via del Babuino, today has become a reference of beauty and luxury. The street is full of shops, art galleries and beautiful buildings. The best? It is close to Piazza di Spagna. The street was the setting for the film ‘The Princess and the Commoner’, by Federico Fellini (who lived on the same street, at number 100). It is possible to visit the garden that served as location for the film, which is at house number 52. It is a very different tour and the rustic style of the street makes you feel in the past! Everything very beautiful!

7) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? VIA DELLE QUATTRO FONTANE

Via delle Quattro Fontane: as the name implies, it is a street with four (beautiful) fountains! With its four Renaissance fountains, Via delle Quatro Fontane is somewhat ‘ignored’ by tourists simply because it’s not part of the ‘main passageways’… And it’s a mistake to leave it out! With images of Diana, Juno and figures representing the River Tiber and River Arno, the fountains are almost in front of the Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (“St Charles in the Four Fountains”) and are imposing, grand and charming, in addition to drawing the attention of those who pass by! How to get there? Get off at the Barberini subway station and take a walk through the neighborhood!

8) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? VIA NICCOLÒ PICCOLOMINI

Via Niccolò Piccolomini. It is one of the most interesting places in Rome and, sadly, little frequented by tourists. Here, because of an optical illusion, the further you walk towards the Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, the smaller and farther it appears to be; and the farther you go, the closer and bigger it looks! It is worth knowing for the WONDERFUL view that one has there. When you get to the belvedere, at the end of the street, don’t be alarmed: the dome seems to be miles away, but the view from the top is full of beauty! To get there, take the metro and get off at Ottaviano station; from there, take the bus line 982 Stz Quattro Venti, and get off at the Piccolomini – Albani stop.

9) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? PERSPECTIVE OF BORROMINI

Perspective of Borromini: another curious optical illusion! Being much smaller than it looks, the set of columns mingles with the floor and makes the corridor look huge, gigantic, but it is actually much smaller than it looks! Yes, it’s small! The corridor is inside the Spada Gallery (which is also worth a visit, as it is beautiful and also known as Palazzo Spada) and to get there use bus lines 46, 56, 62, 64, 70, 81, 87, 492 or 628 It is in Piazza Capo di Fero number 3.

10) Ten less tourist attractions to visit in Rome? VIA ARCO DEI BANCHI

Via Arco dei Banchi: a sky of stars inside a small tunnel! The small passage connects Via Paola with Via del Banco di Santo Spirito and is little known by tourists. In fact, many people pass by without looking at the details: look up! The interior of this small passage is beautiful! Ah, it is next to the Tiber River, so take the opportunity to have a coffee over there! TIP: at night it is much more beautiful because of the special lighting inside the ‘tunnel’! ; )

Hotel I suggest near the Historic Center

If you are passionate about art and would like to stay in the center where you can move around walking, as well as having countless possibilities for places to have lunch / dinner or a snack, I advise you to stay in the historic center. Regions near the Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Imperial Forum and the Villa Borghese, Piazza Spagna and Piazza Navona can be considered as “historic center”. These are the most expensive areas, but you will be close to everything, literally!

Hotels that I suggest near the San Giovanni Region

For those who want to find cheaper alternatives in quiet areas, but at the same time close to the means of transport to the center, I suggest the region of San Giovanni or Monti (near the metro stations San Giovanni, Castro Pretorio and Circus Massimo) – which it is a more residential neighborhood; therefore, more economical and quiet! And with just 15 minutes by subway you will be in the center too!

Hotel I suggest near Termini Station

For those who prefer to stay in neighborhoods that have good access to the rest of the city and at a better price, then you should choose accommodation in the surroundings of Termini Station (from where a dense network of public means of transport starts, serving both: the local people and tourists).

Hotels that I suggest in Trastevere

For those who prefer to “taste” authentic and characteristic Rome, there is nothing better than booking a hotel in Trastevere (on the outskirts of the city’s historic river), full of typical Roman history and traditions, known for the tortuous streets of sampietrini stones and the centers medieval style housing.

The neighborhood is in the historic center and to the right of the Tevere River, in the midst of a spectacular landscape, where each visitor can observe the countless churches and squares (such as Santa Maria in Trastevere). In addition, this neighborhood offers several local restaurants and canteens for those who want to try typical Roman cuisine.
