Less than a century ago, what today appears as one of the most important tourist destinations in Rome, the Imperial Forums on the Street of the Imperial Forums, were almost nonexistent. In the early 1800s, only a part of what was below the level of the road at that time was exposed, and between houses it was possible to see some sections of the ancient Roman ruins. Introduction

Only in the fascist era, from 1924 onwards, Mussolini implemented major demolitions that brought to the surface most of what is now seen, with the intention of creating the “Empire Street”, later called Imperial Forums Street, because it connects the Colosseum to Piazza Venezia (Venice Square). Their Importance

The imperial forums represent the ancient beauty of the city of Rome, and give the capital’s numerous tourists a highly valued historical setting. The imperial forums located on the homonymous street in a spectacular position between the Flavian Amphitheater (known as the Colosseum), the Roman forum and Piazza Venezia (Venice Square), as we have already said, represent one of the most important tourist places in the capital and in the whole world. In ancient Imperial Rome, they represented the main place of public and private life and thanks to their visit it is possible to return to the most glorious time in the capital. The Daily Life of the Forums

The forum was the basis of Roman life, the center of commerce, politics and religion in ancient Rome. Large crowds gathered to attend rallies or to admire the leaders at the parade after their triumphs, with prisoners tied with chains on the wheels of cars. In the forums, the processes were celebrated and the most important decisions were taken regarding the politics and administration of the empire. The forum was the square around where the political, religious and legal life of the city ran, just as the Greeks had the “agorà”, the Romans had the forum.

Access to Forums

The Imperial Forums can be accessed through the pedestrian area, the path that starts from Piazza Venezia (Venice Square) and goes to the Colosseum, lined by the forums and the imposing Mercato Traiano (Trajan’s Market), designed by the great architect Apollodoro di Damasco and consisting of more than 150 stores. They were also used as warehouses and for the supply of goods, but now it houses the Imperial Forums Museum, which preserve the findings recovered during the excavations. 1) Let´s visit the Imperial Forums in Rome? FORUM OF CAESAR

Inaugurated in 46 aC., the Forum of Caesar was the first to be built and served as a model for the successive Forums. It is a monument financed by Caesar dedicated to the goddess Venus.

2) Let´s visit the Imperial Forums in Rome? FORUM OF AUGUSTUS

Built 42 bC, the Forum of Augustus contains the Temple of Mars Ultor, the god of vengeance. The temple was completed in the second year after Christ and inserted in a second square and along the arcades the activities of the courts were carried out. They were decorated with statues of characters from Greek and Latin mythology and the history of Rome and the Giulia family.

3) Let´s visit the Imperial Forums in Rome? TEMPLE OF PEACE

The Temple of Peace 75 a.C. Vespasian gave the order to build a square, near the forum of Augustus and Caesar, towards the Colosseum. Such a square was not considered a forum until it was built as a forum of peace. The forum has a square shape and it was originally surrounded by portals. It was built to celebrate the conquest of Jerusalem at a time when Vespasian was emperor.

The Nerva Forum or Transitory Forum 98 a.C. was ordered by Domitian to unite the area that contained the forums. The square that constitutes the Forum of Nerva put in communication all the temples that already exist between them. The temple is for the goddess Minerva, protector of the emperor. Domitian’s death by murder allowed his successor to inaugurate his name in the forum, which was almost finished. This forum was also called the Transitory Forum.

5) Let´s visit the Imperial Forums in Rome? TRAJAN FORUM

Trajan’s Forum 112 – 113 a.C. was born out of a project by Domitian that compromised part of the estate of Dacia’s campaigns. The Forum celebrated the victory of the emperor, the works of realization of the forum of Trajan were impressive. Trajan’s forum is the last and largest of Rome’s forums perfectly preserved in the stem narrated in a low relief, the two campaigns conducted by Trajan against Daci.

Lodge of the Knights of Malta

The five Forums had imposing dimensions as well as the power that the Roman Empire had during that period. Between the Forum of Trajan and the Forum of Augustus is the building where we find the elegant Lodge of the Knights of Malta, also called “Terrazza Domizianea” (Domitian Terrace).

Flavian Amphitheater

At the end of the tour to the Imperial Forums we can reach the Flavian Amphitheater, better known as Colosseum, built by the Emperors Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. In addition to the daytime visits, it is possible to visit the Imperial Forums also at night and take advantage of the specially created lighting to give even more magic to these places.
