Our Introduction

The Italian coast is full of splendid beaches, we know that, right?! But some of them are worth mentioning, and one of these locations with fantastic beaches is San Vito Lo Capo, in the province of Trapani, Sicily. The beginning of this jewel takes place through an ancient legend, which tells the story of the instabilities of a young Roman patrician, son of a high official in ancient Rome. His name? Vito. How about an Excursion from Trapani to visit: San Vito, Scopello and Castellammare? Click here to learn more!

A little history…

It is said that, one day, Vito wanted to escape the persecutions of Diocletian and so he decided to escape from Mazzara, his hometown, along with the nurse Crescenzia and his tutor Modesto, who converted him to Christianity. After a few days of sailing to north, a strong storm forced them to stop for days in a protected gulf for shelter. They found a rocky gulf, protected from the wind and well known to the sailors of the time, and here the three of them tried to convert the inhabitants of the village of Conturrana, which was about three kilometers from the sea, under a high rock. However, Vito, Modesto and Crescenzia were unable to convert the villagers to their faith and were banished by the locals.

After their expulsion, a landslide buried the village and many considered it a divine punishment. To this day, when arriving by car in San Vito Lo Capo, it is possible to see the area of the landslide and nowadays it is called Contrada Valanga. Since that period, no other landslides have hit the city, so many believe that the site is protected by San Vito and Santa Crescenzia.

It’s almost unnecessary tell you that the city is completely surrounded by incredible landscapes, right? However, we have chosen the most beautiful spots for you to visit in a day in San Vito Lo Capo.

1) San Vito Lo Capo: VISIT LA SPIAGGIA DI SAN VITO

La Spiaggia di San Vito is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! Periodo! Guys, it’s almost impossible to describe this place. With a sea in almost unique shades of turquoise and emerald, the set of natural beauties that presents itself here is the true protagonist and the elements together made this one of the most celebrated beaches on the planet! The place presents us with almost two kilometers of sea, white sand and a PERFECT panorama, which surpasses everything we have seen until today, and I’m not being exaggerated! 2) San Vito Lo Capo: DISCOVER SAN VITO’S SANCTUARY

Although very discreet, this Sanctuary does not go unnoticed. The San Vito Sanctuary stands out splendidly among the low white houses. With its golden shade, it is the only church in the city and, before becoming a sanctuary, it was a fortress, which was built in the late 1400s around the original chapel dedicated to the Saint. Their main objective, of course, was to protect the city from pirate invasions.

The square in front of the sanctuary is the heart of San Vito Lo Capo. This is where city life happens! Shops, restaurants, hotels and, during the summer, several attractions fill the square with life!

3) San Vito Lo Capo: VISIT THE LIGHTHOUSE

Splendid, it is imposing with its 43 meters of height. The lighthouse was inaugurated on August 1, 1959 and, since then, it has never gone out. Pride of the Bourbons, the lighthouse helped navigation and made it safe for sailors who passed by. Be sure to climb to the top of the lighthouse: the view from there is impressive!

4) San Vito Lo Capo: GO TO SANTA MARGHERITA BAY

Another must-see beach in San Vito Lo Capo is Santa Margherita. Between Castelluzzo and Macari, the two small villages in the region, you will find this pearl! The landscape here is breathtaking. Surrounded by the hills of Valle degli Ulivi, the cliffs of Cala Mancina and Monte Cofano, the beach is framed in an almost artistic way, looking like a living painting. Definitely worth a visit!

GOLD TIP:

  • Between June and September, from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, the area of this location is closed to vehicle traffic, however, if you are driving, you can park for free in one of the two parking lots available: one in Macari and the other in Castelluzzo. In both parking lots there is a small train, also for free, that goes back and forth every half hour and makes five stops along the coast.

5) San Vito Lo Capo: ENJOY THE COUSCOUS FESTIVAL

In September, every year, the city presents the couscous festival! San Vito Lo Capo welcomes chefs, guests and artists from around the world for ten days of pure fun and great food! During the festival there are several meetings, culinary challenges, tastings, music and lots of entertainment! There is even a championship that chooses the best couscous from Italian and international chefs! The next edition will be the twenty-fifth edition of the festival and this year’s theme is “Love never stops”; the purpose of this slogan is to remind us that love, despite not always being easy, remains the most sublime of feelings and transcends borders, barriers and cultures.
