Today we are going to talk about the Barolo Route (Strada del Barolo), one of the most famous and visited in the world. There is no ‘order’ to start visiting the cities or ‘mandatory’ attractions (apart from tasting a wine produced there! 1) Piedmont wine route: LANGHE AND GRINZANE CAVOUR

The roads there are winding and present spectacular landscapes that mix the green of the grape plantations with the white of the top of the Alps, seen in the background. The highlight is the mountainous Langhe, a wine-growing region in the province of Cuneo. Another charming city is Grinzane Cavour, where there is a magnificent castle, in addition to La Morra.

2) Piedmont wine route: ALBA

Be sure to visit Alba! With its 30,000 inhabitants, the city is one of the most famous and bustling, very famous for its white truffles, and even hosts an international fair for this delicacy. It is also home to one of the most celebrated restaurants in the world, Piazza Duomo, which, in addition to being beautiful, with a typical menu and an extraordinary wine list, produces many of the ingredients used in its dishes. 3) Piedmont wine route: BAROLO

Passing through Barolo it is possible to visit the most important and oldest winery in the region, Marchesi di Barolo. The winery has 200 years of history and is the best known and traditional producer of Barolo. The cool thing about the region is that, regardless of the time of year, the wineries are never crowded, as they work by appointment, so the tour through any one of them is very peaceful! 4) Piedmont wine route: TURIN

Turin (Torino in Italian) is the largest city in the region and the most lively. The Historic Center is home to relics and is full of charm. With several sights such as Piazza Castello, the Basilica of Superga and Parque Valentino, just to name a few, it is also home to the famous (and delicious!) Gianduia chocolate. About Piedmont Wines

With an overview of the region, let us now talk about the kings of the region, the loves of all enologists in the world: wines! The main labels of the region are: Barolo, Barbaresco with its variations Barolo Asti and Barolo Alba, Dolcetto (which, despite the name, is dry) and Moscato. All are produced with specific types of grapes and there are some rules for the production of these labels: Barolo, for example, is made exclusively with Nebbiolo grapes and it is essential that the wine ages for at least 38 months before being marketed, being that 18 of these months must be in oak barrels.

Those considered ‘Reserve’ need 62 months in the barrel to be able to age properly and then be consumed. In addition, only grapes produced in certain cities can be used in the making of this jewel of oenology. The producing cities are: Barolo, Serralunga D’Alba, Cherasco, Verduno, Roddi, La Morra, Grinzane Cavour, Castiglione Falletto, Diano D’Alba, Novello and Monforte D’Alba.
