Our Introduction

When we talk about Sicily, we indirectly talk about the history, culture and heritage of different peoples who left their mark on one of the most famous regions of Italy. The region, located in the south of Italy, is also home to true natural gems, with splendid beaches and cinematographic panoramas. For those who like the beach, mountains, museums, history and architecture, it is a complete region, with a multitude of attractions.

Tip:

  • Before we start our itinerary, it’s always good to remember: rent a motorcycle from a reliable rental agency! There are specialized companies that only rent motorcycles, so finding the ideal motorcycle for your needs will not be a problem! With a quick search on the internet, you will find several companies of that type.

Important:

Motorcycle lovers know how to deal with the “beauty” they have in their hands, but it never hurts to remember some important information and review EVERYTHING before leaving. The top priority, in addition to renting the motorcycle from a reliable company, is to use appropriate clothing and equipment, especially if traveling during the coldest periods of the year. It is also important to remember to bring your IDP, which is mandatory and you must have specified your authorization to ride motorcycles!

Another important point:

When closing the rental agreement with the company, check the clauses referring to motorcycle insurance. Make sure the motorcycle is insured against theft, accident, fire, natural disasters, etc.

Also, find out about motorcycle parking at the hotel where you are staying: some hotels offer their own parking spaces (sometimes free), others do not. If, by chance, your hotel is located in a ZTL, confirm that the hotel has informed the authorities of the license plate number of the motorcycle you rented, as motorcycle traffic is prohibited in certain places, ok?

Be sure to check that the bike is in perfect condition, right? Italian roads are very well maintained, but in some parts, especially in smaller cities, you may find roads that will require more attention – especially if the weather is rainy or snowy – so: double care!

A little about our itinerary

Well, being an island, Sicily offers us some options to get there: that is, we start from the mainland.

From there you can go by plane or by ship, the famous ‘traghetti’ or ‘ferry’. As for the airports, I suggest you arrive via Catania or Palermo. If you want to rent a motorcycle and come with it from the mainland, you can use the ships of the following ferry operators: Grandi Navi Veloci, Grimaldi Lines, Caronte&Tourist, Tirrenia, TTT Lines and Liberty LinesAs. Departures take place from the following ports: Naples (Campania), Livorno (Tuscany), Genova (Liguria), Civitavecchia (RomeLazio), Salerno (Campania), Vibo Valentia (Calabria) and Reggio di Calabria (Calabria). Arrivals are at the following ports (depending on your departure): Palermo, Catania, Messina or Milazzo.

One of the most common questions is “should I buy the ticket in advance?”

If you travel during high season, yes! Pay attention to the timetables. A good option is to travel at night so you can arrive in the morning and enjoy the day. Regarding values: it depends on where you are going from and what your destination is. There are faster trips and others not so much, so: get organized, ok? How many days will it take? It’s up to you, of course, the more days, the better!

Tip:

  • Remember to rest! Don’t drive when you’re tired or sleepy, okay?

Itineraries

1) Motorbike itinerary through Sicily: MESSINA AND PALERMO

Let’s start our tour from Messina. Messina is where you find the beautiful Strait of Messina, and from here, the Calabria region seems almost touchable with your fingertip. The beaches in this area are fantastic, so if you like the beach, take a day or two to enjoy the locality. Furthermore, the city is very rich in history and its Cathedral, Palazzo Zanca and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele III are worth mentioning.

Leaving Messina and following the A20 highway, we arrive at Palermo. Palermo is one of the most incredible destinations in all of Sicily! The city is incredible, full of attractions and also deserves special attention.

On the way to Palermo we can make several stops along the way in other locations such as the fantastic Aeolian Islands; we can visit Capo d’Orlando and make a strategic stop in Cefalù, which is one of the most peculiar villages in all of Italy, offering us an impressive beauty.

Arriving in Palermo, enjoy! Visit the historic center of the city, don’t be afraid to get lost walking through its old streets and choose one of the many bars on the seafront to watch the city go by. Palermo deserves a stop of at least a day. Let yourself be fascinated by its architecture rich in history and which presents buildings from the Byzantine era to Art Nouveau. Be sure to visit the city’s Cathedral, the Norman Palace and the Theater. It is impossible not to try some typical Sicilian dishes such as arancino, a cassata and a cannolo. Palermo will win you over!

2) Motorbike itinerary through Sicily: MONDELLO, TRAPANI E ERICE

The next day, we continue our journey to Mondello. Mondello is the busiest beach, and one of the most beautiful, in this area. After a quick drive there, take the SS113 and use the Salvina 187 exit. We are heading to another fantastic place in Sicily: Trapani.

Tip:

  • If you want to add another stop to your trip, take a quick detour and head to San Vito lo Capo. It is SO worth it!

We arrive in Trapani

Trapani is known as the ‘city of salt’, because this is where there are numerous salt pans that make its landscape unique and enchanting. In Trapani, it is also worth mentioning, of course, its historic center. Predominantly in Baroque style, a place that offers us a very rich architecture, full of beautiful buildings. The Cathedral is also worth mentioning and can be visited right after lunch, for example. A must see nearby is the splendid Erice. In Erice, the mandatory stop is its castle: impressive. After a nice walk, rest, because the next day we’ll head to another very interesting destination!

3) Motorbike itinerary through Sicily: MARSALA, MAZARA DEL VALLO, SCIACCA E NOTO

We head to three incredible locations between Trapani and Agrigento. Today we will make stops in Marsala, Mazara del vallo and Sciacca. If you prefer, head straight to Agrigento. Needless to say, a mandatory stop in Agrigento is the famous, beautiful and historic Valley of the Temples. The Valley of the Temples bears witness to centuries of history, offering us beauties that are truly unique and priceless. This is one of the most important places in the world, in historical terms, and it is definitely a must-see! If you want to explore the city calmly, stay there for at least one day.

From there, we go to another very interesting location:

The charming Noto – another city that deserves a visit. Noto is the symbol city of the Sicilian Baroque. Its architecture is very refined and well preserved; if you want, spend a day or two there, because in its surroundings there are many very interesting places that can be visited in half a day.

Syracuse

Leaving Noto behind, following the SS115, we arrive at another symbol city of Sicily: Syracuse. A MUST-SEE around here is the Ortigia Cathedral, which is located in the oldest part of the city, and the Greek Theater.

Gold Tip:

  • Do you want to spend a day at the beach? Rest assured that you have found the ideal place!

4) Motorbike itinerary through Sicily: CATANIA, ETNA E TAORMINA

Almost concluding our tour, impossible not to visit Catania. Few know, but Catania is known as the Milan of the south, as it is a city full of life, with an intense nightlife, not to mention that it is beautiful! Catania may require two or three days to visit, but it’s not a sacrifice. From there you can also pay a visit to Etna and ‘climb’ its slopes, reaching 3,000 meters in height and be dazzled by the unique view offered from above.

We have reached the last leg of our itinerary!

From Catania, we go up through the beautiful east coast of the island using the SS114 and we can visit: the Norman Castle of Aci Castello, the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi – in Aci Trezza, the Naxos Gardens and, of course, the unique Taormina. In Taormina, be sure to make a strategic stop at the beautiful Piazza IX Aprile and the spectacular Isola Bella. Leaving Taormina, we head back to Messina, concluding our motorcycle itinerary through Sicily.
