Visiting the Trevi Fountain

The “biggest and the most famous”, the Trevi Fountain is the most majestic of Rome’s fountains. The little square around it is perhaps the most crowded place of tourists in the city. Rome, the Eternal City, is famous for its many churches and monuments. The Trevi Fountain is one of the most visited monuments by tourists. Full of charm, history, and beauties, Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world! Nowhere else in the world celebrates the wonderful and changing world of water as the Trevi Fountain does.

1) Visiting the Trevi Fountain: ITS LOCATION

This extraordinary work of art is much more than a sculpture: it is the triumph of Baroque aesthetics embodied in natural forms, and contemplates in the movement itself the soul of the world. It was designed by Nicolò Salvi in ​​a happy union of classicism and baroque. Located on the side of the Poli Palace, in Piazza di Trevi (Trevi Square), 00187 Roma RM (nearest metro station is Barberini), Italy, it is the most imposing and thunderous structure in the small square in which it is located – space is limited and it is necessary crossing the crowd in the bustling streets of the surroundings, making the fountain even more exciting.

2)Visiting the Trevi Fountain: LEARN ITS HISTORY

The history of the fountain is parallel to the construction of the aqueduct Aqua Virgo from the era of Emperor Augustus), when in 19 B.C. General Agrippa, son-in-law of Emperor Augustus, ordered running water to the Pantheon and its thermal baths. This gallery was built with the aim of creating free spas for Roman citizens, dedicated to God Neptune. The central pipeline still circulates underground until today and the Trevi Fountain bears witness to this, marking the end of the aqueduct.

According to legend, the term “Virgin” came from a case with Agrippa’s soldiers. Being thirsty, they were guided to the source by a girl (a virgin, of course) – perhaps it was the goddess Diana, Apollo’s sister, who loved to bathe in the fountains with her nymphs after exhausting hunts. The name may also have been simply an association with calm and pure waters, free of limestone. Agrippa’s Fountain was surrounded by an enormous wall, on which three holding tanks were supported, and remained so until 1453, when Pope Nicholas V entrusted the restoration of the fountain to Leon Battista Alberti.

The Fountain Reform

It was with Pope Urban VIII Barberini that a reform for the fountain was considered. In fact, the Pope wanted a scenic fountain to be able to see it from his residence at the Quirinal Palace. In 1625, Pope Urban VIII commissioned Bernini to demolish the old façade and start a new fountain, this time more grand. After four years, with the Pope’s death, the work was suspended. Ninety years later, it was Pope Clement XII, in 1730, who announced a competition for the realization of the fountain. Whoever won was a stranger named Nicola Salvi – they say he made his work of art by stealing Bernini’s first project. The works lasted thirty years and were completed in 1762, under the papacy of Clement XIII. Giuseppe Pannini laid the last stone.

3)Visiting the Trevi Fountain : SEE THE FOUNTAIN DETAILS

The façade of the Trevi Fountain is based on three architectural elements: the front is made of travertine marble, the statues are made of Carrara marble and the fountain is also made of travertine. The dominant theme of all sculptures from the source is the marine world. The great statue of Oceanus, the god Neptune, was sculpted by Pietro Bracci. Of equal beauty and elegance is the shell-shaped carriage, pulled by some seahorses, which in turn are handled by tritons. Such mythological characters give movement and dynamism to the composition.

Right in the center of the monumental complex, in front of the palace, is the statue of Oceanus, represented in a shell-shaped carriage hoisted by winged horses. There are also, among other sculptures, figures of tritons and marine animals, mythological and real. The sculptures that make up this wonderful fountain narrate a sequence of events linked to the discovery of the same fountain, from which comes the water that feeds the fountain. The four allegorical statues located at the top of the mansard represent the benefits of rain in relation to the fertility of the land and the four largest productions that depend on the availability of water, are:

  1. The first statue on the left carries a basket of fruit, which expresses Abundance.
  2. The second holds corn cobs in the hands, representing soil fertility.
  3. The third has a bowl and grapes, symbols of the Autumn Harvest.
  4. The last one represents the Joy of Meadows and Gardens and is all decorated in flowers.

Some Curiosities about the Fountain

This fountain represents everything most magnificent in a true work of art. There is no shortage of curiosities and legends connected to it. In the center of the fountain we see a miter in travertine marble, which seems to have been thrown without care – probably a criticism against the papacy. The fountain was the scene of several films, it is worth remembering the unforgettable scene of “La Dolce Vita”, by Fellini, in which the sensual Anita Ekberg wears a black dress and soaks in the waters of the fountain, calling Marcello Mastroianni.

For those who want to find cheaper alternatives in quiet areas, but at the same time close to the means of transport to the center, I suggest the region of San Giovanni or Monti (near the metro stations San Giovanni, Castro Pretorio and Circus Massimo) – which it is a more residential neighborhood; therefore, more economical and quiet! And with just 15 minutes by subway you will be in the center too!
