Venice has a special magic and is worth a visit! Not to be missed, in addition to the St. Mark’s Basilica, is another Venetian symbol: the Doge’s Palace. 1) How to get to Venice from Rome? WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Below are the options with Public Transport.

Public Transport – TRAIN

The first option that we will present is, of course, the train. Once in Rome, take the train from Roma Termini Station towards Venice, to Venezia Santa Lucia Station. You can buy tickets online and, I really advise you to buy them in advance, so that everything is more planned and, with that, you save a lot of time (and money !!)! Always remember to validate your tickets at the stations.

Travel duration

An average of 4 hours with departures every 60 minutes, approximately. You can get off: at Venezia Santa Lucia Station, which is at the entrance of Venice. Also read How do I get from Venezia Lucia Station to my hotel in Venice?

Another detail which is worth mentioning

Get ready because, usually, the regional railway trains are very bad and sometimes very dirty, so don’t create high expectations! If you use the train, always choose the high speed train to avoid this type of problem. To understand the differences in trains, see the post I wrote about transportation in Italy. One more thing: the time that is wasted with all these trips, could be used to make the most of the visited city!

Did you know?

Trenitalia is the main Italian company dedicated to the management of railway transport. Find out here “What is the difference between trains in Italy?“. Buy your ticket online in advance and save a lot, read the Post “How to buy a train ticket in Italy?”.

Public Transport – BUS

Warning: this route can take up to 9 hours, depending on the bus and route chosen! Remember that Rome is in the center of Italy and Venice in the northeast, so it’s a long way. One option is to take the bus from Tiburtina Station to Bologna. You will probably need to take another bus along the way when the bus arrives in Florence. Once in Bologna, take the bus to Venice Marco Polo Airport. There, take the bus to Santa Lucia Station.

Is it possible to make a straight trip? Yes! Take a bus at Largo Guido Manzoni, 3 – next to Rome’s Tiburtina station, to Marco Polo Airport.

Attention! Important!

  • Train and bus timetables change during the winter and also in the summer, check before leaving!
  • The bus option is not the most suitable, as it is a tiring trip, and you will have little time in Venice.

Advantages

  • Ideal option for people who like to do things at their own pace;
  • For people who are used to traveling, mainly by train;
  • For young people, for those who are backpacking;
  • And especially for people who want to save money and are in no hurry.

Disadvantages

  • For families with young children and for elderly people it ends up being very tiring;
  • Having to adapt to the fixed round-trip schedules of trains (or buses);
  • Having to go to the sights alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language;
  • Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or extra money you will spend on taxi once you arrive at your destination;
  • And the time that is wasted with all these trips, which could be used to make the most of the visited city.

Did you get to Venice?

From the Station you can: go walking, but be prepared to go up and down countless steps, or use vaporettos, a typical type of transport in Venice, that work like a water bus. On foot, if you have time, stop at one of the many bars for coffee!

If you take the Taxi to Santa Lucia Station, you can then easily walk to the main points of Venice. If you prefer, use water taxis or vaporettos to reach your final destination!

2) How to get to Venice from Rome? WITH A GROUP TOUR

A group tour offers, in general, what a private tour offers, the difference is that the city tour has fixed days to carry out the tours. This type of proposal is unique, in terms of quality and benefit, as you will get a much better price, as the amount can be shared with more people.

Group tours are a great alternative for those who do not want to spend so much and for those who are not used to traveling alone and, therefore, prefer to be in a group, where there will be a person who will organize all the tours of the day! That way you don’t have to worry about nothing! Just being rested and willing to discover magnificent places!

Advantages

  • IDEAL option if you are alone, as a couple or with up to seven friends;
  • To save on the time you would spend going to the train stations to take the trains, or with transportation to reach the tourist places to be visited in Assisi;
  • Visit of TWO cities on the same day (Assisi and Cassia or Orvieto);
  • Less time spent traveling, fees for taxis, trains and transportation;
  • Service with the charm that the Italian can offer and with the excellence that you seek;
  • You will be able to enjoy a “bicchiere di vino” (a glass of wine) during lunch without having to worry about driving later :), since in Italy the laws are strict against those who drive after they drank (even a small amount of alcohol) ;
  • If you have children, great! In addition to having a discount, with the assistant guide speaking in English, they will, in addition to understanding, questioning and learning much more about the local culture and life! They will love it;
  • If you are with elderly people or people with limited mobility, this option is ideal, as it requires little displacement and, when necessary, you will have all the necessary assistance.

Disadvantage

  • There is practically none! Just the matter of adapting to the program of the day, and meeting the tour schedule!

Note

  • Remember, always read customer testimonials before proceeding with the reservation.

3) How to get to Venice from Rome? WITH A RENTED CAR

If you prefer to do things with more tranquility and freedom of time, you can choose to rent a car to take this tour! BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT !!!! THE DISTANCES ARE QUITE LONG… IT’S NOT WORTH TO GO BY CAR !!! But, anyway, I will leave all the necessary and important information for your trip!

How to get there by car?

From Rome, take the E35 highway, follow the signs for Bologna, take the A14 highway exit. Then you will take the A13, heading to Padova, follow the exit A4 / E70, following the signs for Venezia / Marco Polo . TIP: Use a GPS. Despite being well signposted, the roads can confuse those who are not used to driving on Italian roads. We will have to leave the car at Piazzale Roma which is located 5 minutes from Venezia Santa Lucia train station (just across a bridge).

Important to Know

Piazzale Roma is the gateway (on land) to Venice, so if you arrive with a taxi, car or bus, you will always reach Piazzale Roma and from there you will have to move on foot or with a water transport (vaporetto or private transport) that will take you very close to your hotel).

Tip

Parking at Piazzale Roma costs an average of 30 euros per day, I always advise leaving the car in Venezia Mestre, a city next to Venice, and from there take a bus that usually passes every 20 minutes and will take you to Piazzale Roma (the ticket costs on average 2 euros). Do this if you want to save but, obviously, with this scheme you end up wasting time, so you must evaluate if it is worth it.

Advantages

  • If you are in 4 or 5 people it will be a great option in relation to the train or the bus;
  • Great for visiting more places on the same day, at your time and pace;
  • It is the best means of transport for people who are used to drive anywhere and have an easy time “locating” themselves

Disadvantages

  • You will need an international driver’s license (IDP) to be able to drive in Italy or the driver’s license from your country with certified translation;
  • Those who drive do not enjoy the beautiful scenery during the trip!
  • Extra expenses with GPS (average price of € 15.00) to avoid getting lost so much;
  • Another thing, people: to travel in Italy, as I have explained several times, it is necessary to have an international driver’s license or your driver’s license with certified translation, O.K.? If you don’t have it, DO NOT DRIVE, as you will have a lot of problems if you are stopped by the Italian police! READ THE POST DO I NEED AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE TO DRIVE IN ITALY?
  • Those who drive cannot drink, the Italian laws on this are very strict and you run the risk of getting a really huge fine. So if you intend to taste great Italian wine during lunch stay tuned about it! Don’t risk ruining your vacation !!!
  • It is not suitable for people who do not have the security to ask for information, especially if they do not speak Italian, as with the train or the bus not knowing the territory, you may end up wasting precious time that could be used for tourist visits.

4) How to get to Venice from Rome? WITH A PRIVATE TOUR

The last option is a private tour. The advantage of the private tour is the total freedom to decide your own time, not having to wait to leave, wasting unnecessary time using it to visit other places. In addition, the tour departs comfortably from your own hotel, which is important when you have little time available to visit a few places.

Absolute Comfort

In addition, of course, the arrival will not be at the train or bus station, but directly at the sight you want to visit. And if you book in advance, you will often be able to have the driver in your own language, so you can easily ask for clarification about the trip.

This type of tour is ideal for VIPs, who want comfort from start to finish, for small groups of friends or for the elderly. This type of service guarantees absolute comfort for those who travel. Basically, you should just enjoy the tour without the stress of attending train, subway, bus schedules, or worrying about where the main places to be seen are!
