1) How to go to Tivoli from Rome? WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT

We present the options with Public Transport below.

Public Transport – TRAIN

The first option that we will present is, of course, the train: The train station in Tivoli is a little far from Villa D’Este and you will have to walk further in relation to the bus alternative, but nothing absurd (about 1 km ).

  • You can take the Tivoli-bound train in Rome both at Termini Station and at Tiburtina Stationi.
  • You can buy tickets online and I really advise you to buy them in advance, so that everything is more planned and, with that, you save a lot of time (not to mention the possibility of saving so much with the advance purchase of tickets).
  • Always remember to validate your tickets at the stations.
  • Trip duration: average of 1 hour with departures every approximately 60 minutes.
  • You can get off: at the Tivoli train station.
  • From the station you can go: walking to Praça Garibaldi, for about 1 km, where it is very close to Villa D’este. If you have time walking, stop by one of the many bars for coffee. Or you can take a taxi: if you find it interesting, when you arrive in Tivoli by train, take a taxi to Praça Garibaldi, which is next to Villa D’este. Remember to take only official taxis, O.K.?

  • One very important thing: be prepared because regional railroad trains are often very bad and, sometimes, very dirty, so don’t set high expectations regarding the south trains because, vis-à-vis, you can have a huge disappointment! Public Transport – BUSES

Incredibly, to go to Tivoli, this is the best option, as the bus leaves you five minutes walk from Villa D’este.

  • In Rome, take the metro and go to Ponte Mammolo Station, which is on line B.
  •  From there, take the COTRAL bus: just go up two levels from where you get off the metro. It has indication and is well signposted. When you go up, you will see an empty terminal, make no mistake: it gets filled up in minutes!
  • Look for the Tivoli-bound bus and wait for the departure. They leave every half hour and the trip lasts approximately an hour.
Attention
  • Train and bus timetables change during the winter and also in the summer, check before leaving!
Advantages
  • Ideal option for people who like to do things at their own pace;
  • For people who are used to travel mainly by train;
  • For young people, for those who are backpacking;
  • And especially for people who want to save money and are in no hurry.
Disadvantages
  • For families with young children and for elderly people it ends up being very tiring. I do not recommend!
  • Having to adapt to the fixed schedules of trains (or buses) for the trip;
  • Having to go to the tourist spots alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language;
  • Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or extra money you will spend on taxi once you reach the destination;
  • And especially the time that is wasted with all these journeys, which could be used to make the most of the visited city!

2) How to go to Tivoli from Rome? WITH A GROUP CITY TOUR

In a group tour that offers, more or less, what a private tour offers, the difference is that the city tour has fixed days to carry out the tours. This type of proposal is unique, in terms of quality and benefit, as you will get a much better price, since the values can be shared with more people.

  • Less time spent traveling, with taxis, trains and transportation;
  • Service with the charm that only Italian people can offer and with the excellence that you are looking for!
  • If you have children, great! In addition to having a discount, with the guide speaking in English, they will, in addition to understanding, questioning and learning much more than with a local guide! They will love it;
  • If you are with elderly people or people with limited mobility, this option is ideal, as it requires little movement and, when necessary, you will have all the necessary assistance.

Disadvantage

  • There is practically none, just the fact of adapting your plans to the program of the day.

3) How to go to Tivoli from Rome? WITH A RENTED CAR

If you prefer to do things with more tranquility and freedom of time, you can choose to rent a car to take this tour. But read carefully all our tips and information for renting a car! How to get there: from Rome, take the A24 highway; then take exit A24 / E80 and follow signs for Via Maremmana Inferiore / SP51A and SR5, until you reach Tivoli. TIP: Use a GPS. Despite being well signposted, the roads can confuse those who are not used to driving on Italian roads.

Among the first options, precisely because it does not have fixed schedules, the rental car is certainly the ideal choice. It is always complicated to drive on roads that we do not know, it depends on person to person and the type of trip you are used to. This option is ideal if you like to drive!

Attention

In addition, it is important to know that in tourist cities there are places (historic centers) where PARKING is PROHIBITED, and can only be used by residents of the region! That is why it is important not to go to these places to avoid unnecessary fines. STAY TUNED! In Italy it is common for them to tow the car or put that hubcap that blocks the vehicle’s exit!   • Extra expenses with GPS (average price of € 10.00 / € 15.00 – A DAY) so you don’t get lost so much.
  • Another thing, folks: to drive in Italy, as I have explained several times, is it essential to have an International Driver License AND your original driver license (in English) or with an official translation, ok?! If you don’t have these documents: DO NOT DRIVE, as you will have a lot of problems if you are stopped by the Italian police! READ ALSO: DO I NEED THE IDL TO DRIVE IN ITALY?
  • Those who drive cannot drink, the Italian laws on this are very strict and you take the risk of getting a really huge fine. So if you intend to taste great Italian wine during lunch pay attention! Don’t risk ruining your vacation!
  • It is not a suitable option for people who do not have the confidence to ask for information, especially if they do not speak Italian, as with the train or the bus not knowing the territory you can end up wasting precious time that could be used for tourist visits.
