Unfortunately in Italy, trains (with the exception of high-speed trains) can be delayed, especially in winter! So be prepared for that possibility. As my husband says, just as it is true that in Italy you eat VERY well, it is certain that trains are always late!

I have lived in Italy for several years and I am used to these types of trains, but I prefer to warn readers about this; if you want to travel on clean, comfortable trains and without delay (especially in southern Italy) you should always use high-speed trains, which cost a little more, but, in my opinion, the difference in price is really worthwhile.

Advantages

• Ideal option for people who like to do things at their own pace;
• For people who are used to traveling, mainly by train;
• For young people, for those who are backpacking;
• And especially for people who want to save money and are in no hurry.

Disadvantages

• For families with young children and for elderly people it ends up being very tiring;
• Having to adapt to the fixed round-trip schedules of trains (or buses);
• Having to go to the sights alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language;
• Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or extra money you will spend on taxi once you arrive at your destination;
• And the time that is wasted with all these trips, which could be used to make the most of the visited city.

3) How to get to Assisi from Rome? BY BUS

My third suggestion is the bus, the average distance is 2 hours and 45 minutes, but the bus does not depart from Termini Station, it departs from Tiburtina Station (which is also a metro and train station). I see as the main disadvantage the fact that there are few departures from Rome and, for this reason, I suggest you buy the ticket the day before or, if possible, up to two days in advance! That way it will be easier to find availability and, hopefully, you will find departures at better times! The advantages and disadvantages are the same as the option with the Train.

4) How to get to Assisi from Rome? WITH A RENTED CAR

You can go to a Rent a Car and rent the car for a day to go to Assisi, and if you don’t get lost (lol), if there is time, you can also slip over to other cities that are nearby, like Cássia, Perugia or Orvieto! Among the first three options, precisely because there is no fixed schedule for sure the rental car, it is the ideal choice if you do not worry about taking a few, say, unnecessary turns. It is always complicated to drive on roads that we do not know, it depends on each person and the type of trip you are used to.

• If you are in 4 or 5 people it will be a great option in relation to the train or the bus;
• Great for visiting more places on the same day, at your time and pace;
• It is the best means of transport for people who are used to drive anywhere and have an easy time “locating” themselves

Disadvantages

• You will need an international driver’s license (IDP) to be able to drive in Italy or the driver’s license from your country with certified translation;
• Those who drive do not enjoy the beautiful scenery during the trip!

• Another thing, people: to travel in Italy, as I have explained several times, it is necessary to have an international driver’s license or your driver’s license with certified translation, O.K.?
