How to get to Assisi from Rome?

Assisi, in Umbria, is one of the most beloved medieval towns in Italy, unfortunately as I had already specified in the post “How to get to Cassia?, the travels in Umbria territory are not as good as, for example, in Tuscany or Veneto, so I am going to introduce you to the five best options to reach the city of Saint Francis, patron saint of Italy! Introduction

Italy is beautiful, I challenge anyone to say the opposite. Its picturesque towns make Italy unique, these towns were also born due to particular geophysical conditions, since most of the territory consists of mountains and hills, so the man had to make a global network of villages, far from each other and each one with its own characteristics, but all united by a common denominator: the more or less accentuated difficulty in reaching them. 1) How to get to Assisi from Rome? WITH A GROUP TOUR

My first indication is a small group tour that offers, more or less, what a private tour offers. The difference is that the city tour has fixed days to carry out the tours. This type of proposal is unique, in terms of quality and benefit, as you will get a much better price, since the values can be shared with more people. Also read “What to do in a day in Assisi?”

Economical Tour

Group tours are a great alternative for those who do not want to spend so much and for those who are not used to traveling alone and therefore prefer to be in a group, where there will be a person who will organize all the day’s tours! That way you don’t have to worry about anything! Just being rested and willing to visit magnificent places!

There are several tours that depart from the center of Rome, near Termini Station, right next to the station they have a place that sells this type of tour, so just go there and hire the service! You wanted to do a city tour, didn’t you?

Advantages

  • IDEAL option if you are alone, as a couple or with up to seven friends;
  • To save on the time you would spend going to the train stations to take the trains, or with transportation to reach the tourist places to be visited in Assisi;
  • Visit of TWO cities on the same day (Assisi and Cassia or Orvieto);
  • Less time spent traveling, fees for taxis, trains and transportation;
  • Service with the charm that the Italian can offer and with the excellence that you seek;
  • You will be able to enjoy a “bicchiere di vino” (a glass of wine) during lunch without having to worry about driving later :), since in Italy the laws are strict against those who drive after they drank (even a small amount of alcohol) ;
  • If you have children, great! In addition to having a discount, with the assistant guide speaking in English, they will, in addition to understanding, questioning and learning much more about the local culture and life! They will love it;
  • If you are with elderly people or people with limited mobility, this option is ideal, as it requires little displacement and, when necessary, you will have all the necessary assistance.

Disadvantage

  • There is practically none! Just the matter of adapting to the program of the day, and meeting the tour schedule!

Note

  • Remember, always read customer testimonials before proceeding with the reservation.

2) How to get to Assisi from Rome? BY TRAIN

It is certainly the most economical way, the average travel time is 2 hours (approximately), but unfortunately, there are no high-speed trains to Assisi, only Intercity and Regional, see this post on the “Difference of Trains in Italy ”to understand the differences that are well explained, including prices! Just go to Termini Station, and buy the ticket ONE DAY BEFORE or BOOK ONLINE, through the railway companies’ website.

Discount Ticket

Buy your ticket online in advance and save a lot, read the Post “How to buy a train ticket in Italy?”. Unfortunately in Italy, trains (with the exception of high-speed trains) can be delayed, especially in winter! So be prepared for that possibility. As my husband says, just as it is true that in Italy you eat VERY well, it is certain that trains are always late!

I have lived in Italy for several years and I am used to these types of trains, but I prefer to warn readers about this; if you want to travel on clean, comfortable trains and without delay (especially in southern Italy) you should always use high-speed trains, which cost a little more, but, in my opinion, the difference in price is really worthwhile.

Advantages

  • Ideal option for people who like to do things at their own pace;
  • For people who are used to traveling, mainly by train;
  • For young people, for those who are backpacking;
  • And especially for people who want to save money and are in no hurry.

Disadvantages

  • For families with young children and for elderly people it ends up being very tiring;
  • Having to adapt to the fixed round-trip schedules of trains (or buses);
  • Having to go to the sights alone, without knowing the city or speaking the local language;
  • Time wasted on public buses from railway stations to places where tourist attractions are located or extra money you will spend on taxi once you arrive at your destination;
  • And the time that is wasted with all these trips, which could be used to make the most of the visited city.

3) How to get to Assisi from Rome? BY BUS

My third suggestion is the bus, the average distance is 2 hours and 45 minutes, but the bus does not depart from Termini Station, it departs from Tiburtina Station (which is also a metro and train station). I see as the main disadvantage the fact that there are few departures from Rome and, for this reason, I suggest you buy the ticket the day before or, if possible, up to two days in advance! That way it will be easier to find availability and, hopefully, you will find departures at better times! The advantages and disadvantages are the same as the option with the Train.

4) How to get to Assisi from Rome? WITH A RENTED CAR

You can go to a Rent a Car and rent the car for a day to go to Assisi, and if you don’t get lost (lol), if there is time, you can also slip over to other cities that are nearby, like Cássia, Perugia or Orvieto! Among the first three options, precisely because there is no fixed schedule for sure the rental car, it is the ideal choice if you do not worry about taking a few, say, unnecessary turns. It is always complicated to drive on roads that we do not know, it depends on each person and the type of trip you are used to.

Advantages

  • If you are in 4 or 5 people it will be a great option in relation to the train or the bus;
  • Great for visiting more places on the same day, at your time and pace;
  • It is the best means of transport for people who are used to drive anywhere and have an easy time “locating” themselves

Disadvantages

  • You will need an international driver’s license (IDP) to be able to drive in Italy or the driver’s license from your country with certified translation;
  • Those who drive do not enjoy the beautiful scenery during the trip!
  • Extra expenses with GPS (average price of € 15.00) to avoid getting lost so much;
  • Another thing, people: to travel in Italy, as I have explained several times, it is necessary to have an international driver’s license or your driver’s license with certified translation, O.K.? If you don’t have it, DO NOT DRIVE, as you will have a lot of problems if you are stopped by the Italian police! READ THE POST DO I NEED AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE TO DRIVE IN ITALY?
  • Those who drive cannot drink, the Italian laws on this are very strict and you run the risk of getting a really huge fine. So if you intend to taste great Italian wine during lunch stay tuned about it! Don’t risk ruining your vacation !!!
  • It is not suitable for people who do not have the security to ask for information, especially if they do not speak Italian, as with the train or the bus not knowing the territory, you may end up wasting precious time that could be used for tourist visits.

5) How to get to Assisi from Rome? WITH A PRIVATE TOUR

The last option is a private tour. The advantage of the private tour is the total freedom to decide your own time, not having to wait to leave, wasting unnecessary time using it to visit other places. In addition, the tour departs comfortably from your own hotel, which is important when you have little time available to visit a few places.

Absolute Comfort

In addition, of course, the arrival will not be at the train or bus station, but directly at the sight you want to visit. And if you book in advance, you will often be able to have the driver in your own language, so you can easily ask for clarification about the trip.

This type of tour is ideal for VIPs, who want comfort from start to finish, for small groups of friends or for the elderly. This type of service guarantees absolute comfort for those who travel. Basically, you should just enjoy the tour without the stress of attending train, subway, bus schedules, or worrying about where the main places to be seen are!

  • Great for visiting more places on the same day, at your time and pace;
  • You won’t have to worry about train or bus schedules, you won’t have to worry about whether you will be able to return to Rome or not;
  • Do not need to “stick” to schedules and itineraries;
  • You will save a LOT of time, which you would lose with commuting by bus and train.
