Bologna Airport is officially called Guglielmo Marconi Airport and it is the main airport in the Emilia Romagna region. In the 2019 season the airport opened new routes with cities such as Philadelphia, Helsinki, Heraklion, Karpathos, Stuttgart, Reggio Calabria, Corfù, Crotone, Marseille and Podgorica (Ryanair), in addition to new arrival and departure frequencies.

Some routes will operate only in the summer as flights to and from Amman, Düsseldorf, Kaunas, London and Vienna. You can understand all its importance, can’t you? And, amazingly, there is only one runway!

Bologna Airport has a single terminal and is divided into two floors. Downstairs are the smoking points (outside the building), the airline check-in areas, which have 64 counters, a general information desk, six restaurants, four bars, two ATMs, a drugstore, a tobacco shop, a supermarket , a currency exchange, an office to welcome tourists, duty free, car rental companies, arrival and assistance with lost luggage area. On the upper floor, there are two bars, shops, another currency exchange, security check and baggage check and boarding gates (there are 15 in total). All areas of the airport offer points with plugs to recharge your cell phone and free Wi-Fi.

Transport options for the city

Getting to the city center from the airport is super easy and there are a few options: train, bus, taxi or transfer. The city center is only 8 km from the airport and the connections take and bring in a fast, safe and comfortable way.

1) How to get from Bologna airport to the city center? BY TRAIN

By train, leaving the airport, go down to level 0 and follow Via del Triumvirato. From there, you can see the train station on the right. Get off at Central station. The train ride takes about 5 minutes. It may not be as comfortable because of the bags, but it is still a good option for those who want to save money. One of the downsides is that the train leaves hourly, so depending on the time, you’ll have to wait a little longer.

Tips

  • Avoid peak times, many use the train as their primary form of transportation to get to and come from work, so trains sometimes appear crowded at stations. To go or come by train to the center and from the center, you will pay 3 euros, more ou less.
  • Did you know that Trenitalia is the main Italian company dedicated to the management of railway transport? Find out here “What is the difference between trains in Italy?”. Buy your ticket online in advance and save a lot, read the Post “How to buy a train ticket in Italy?”.

2) How to get from Bologna airport to the city center? BY BUS

One of the best ways to get to the center is the Aerobus service. It is a bus that connects directly to Bologna’s central train station. They offer transportation every 11 minutes and they operate from 5:00 am to 11:35 pm. The service costs 6 euros and it is possible to buy on site (you pay directly to the driver) or online. It takes 15 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic and the chosen times.

3) How to get from Bologna airport to the city center? WITH PRIVATE TRANSFER

If you want even more comfort and don’t want to worry about waiting, buying tickets or looking for a taxi, you can choose to use a private transfer. It is a great option for those with children or people with mobility problems. Not to mention the convenience of having someone waiting for you when you disembark. Even if it is a slightly more expensive service, being aware that you will already have someone waiting for you when you arrive at the airport certainly will ‘calm you down’, as it will take you straight to your hotel, without delay, safely and the driver can even give you some tips about the city or the region where you are.

Accessing the link “Transfer Service”, you can get more information about this option. It is safe, comfortable and the value for money is excellent!

4) How to get from Bologna airport to the city center? BY TAXI

You can also take a taxi. The service costs about 20 euros and the journey takes about 15 minutes. Some taxis charge a volume of luggage, around 10 euros per ‘extra’ bag, so be sure to check before taking the taxi so that you won’t be surprised at your final destination, O.K.?!

A little bit of Bologna’s history

Bologna was an Etruscan city from 510 BC. It became a Roman colony in the 2nd century BC, and with the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was taken over by the Byzantine Empire. In the 12th century, it was an independent and constantly growing city. Between 1796 and 1815, the city was occupied by Napoleon Bonaparte and, later, until 1859, it was part of the Pontifical States. In the Monarchy period, Bologna was the emblematic republican center.

The city was heavily bombed during World War II and, as the war ended, it became the Italian center of socialism and communism. In addition to tourism, the city is an important center for the production of various products: agricultural, steel, ceramic, chemical and food. Due to its excellent location, Bologna has connections with the whole country and is home to one of the oldest universities in Bologna. Dante Alighieri and Petraca have studied there.

Attractions in Bologna

The city is an open air museum, with a very beautiful and very classic architecture! Its buildings tell a fascinating history, full of key moments for the whole history of Italy. We can start the tour at the central station. There, exit via Via dell’Indipendenza. From there, walking (about three blocks), you can reach the main square of the city, Piazza Maggiore. It is possible to realize that you got there when you come across the beautiful Scala Della Montagola (Montagnola Staircase). Once you have overcome the staircase, you will see the square, which is one of the symbols of the city and where famous and important Palaces are located, with a unique beauty such as Palazzo Podestà (Podestà Palace), from the 13th century, Palazzo Re Enzo (Re Enzo Palace), Torre dell’Arengo (Arengo Tower) and the Palazzo Comunale (Municipal Palace).
