1) How to avoid fines in Florence? UNDERSTAND ABOUT ZTL BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

Essentially, avoid ZTL at all costs. Several people ask me about the famous ZTL, but, after all, what are ZTL? By clicking on this link you can get deeper into the subject, in short, ZTL are areas where vehicle traffic is extremely restricted. Usually the ZTLs are at the entrances and in the historic center itself and were created to preserve the city’s heritage, since, as they are very old, cars passing through there could often damage the streets and, God help us, some structures in the event of an accident. 2) How to avoid fines in Florence? STAY TUNED TO THE INFORMATION WEBSITES AND APPLICATIONS

One of the “best” attitudes to make people aware is to touch their budgets: that’s why they adopted the policy on fines. If you are coming to Florence by car or are thinking of driving around the city, you should familiarize yourself with these areas, where they start and end, times, alternative routes, restrictions, etc., because if you enter a ZTL, even if for mistake at the wrong time, you are bound to get fined! To check the ZTL in Florence, you can access this website. There are also apps available to alert you to the presence of ZTLs: Waze works well and ZTL Firenze can also help a lot! Find out here Where to park in Florence!

3) How to avoid fines in Florence? GET HOTEL AUTHORIZATION

If your hotel is inside a ZTL, you will need to inform the license plate and pass on some more information so that the hotel includes you in the “desired” lista bianca (“white list”) – which is a list of vehicles authorized to travel through ZTL. Do this BEFORE arriving at the hotel, it can even be done at the time of booking. To get to know which are ALL the streets that are part of the ZTL, click here!

Tip

  • If you are coming by car just to spend the day in Florence, park OUTSIDE the historic center! In addition to being much more affordable, you are not at risk of receiving a fine. Discover our Accommodation section in Italy!

4) How to avoid fines in Florence? PARK OUTSIDE THE HISTORICAL CENTER

If you need to park in Florence outside the historic center, on this link you will find a list of ALL the parking lots in the area OUTSIDE the historic center; it is even possible to book online when available.

Important to Know

Guys, it is not because there is no guard in sight, that you escape the fine! The streets have cameras placed in strategic locations that film and photograph the “lawbreakers’! The cameras and fixed radars that control drivers, not only in the historic center, are located in the following locations:

  • At the entrance and exit of the city, at Viale Etruria;
  • At the entrance and exit of Via Marco Polo;
  •  At the Indian Viaduct;
  • Viale Matteotti;
  • Viale Lavagnini;
  • Viale Gramsci;
  • Via Senese, which is also at the entrance to the city.

They control speed, red light advance, parking in a prohibited place and other traffic violations. In Italy it is also prohibited to talk on the cell phone while driving, so stay tuned! Just like driving without a seat belt, O.K.?!

5) How to avoid fines in Florence? DO NOT SMOKE DRIVING

Attention Smokers !!!! Smoking is prohibited while driving and it generates a fine! The fine increases if in the car there is an under-age or a pregnant woman, so smoke when you are out of the car, O.K.?! The fine in the cases mentioned above varies between 27 and 500 euros, in addition to the suspension of driving permission for 7 to 30 days. Always important to remember: if you drink, don’t drive! Under no circumstances!

Cost of Fines at ZTL (the most common fines)

If by chance, carelessness or inattention you access a ZTL without a permit, it is very likely that a fine will arrive for you! Fines vary between 80 euros and 335 euros and are calculated according to the location and time. If you receive the fine and pay 5 days before your due date, you have a 30% discount. Always remember that the fine can reach your home in up to 60 days, but it arrives!

Handicapped

If you are traveling with a person with some type of disability, it is necessary to rent an appropriate car for these people, because the license plate and the vehicle indicate that the car is for people with physical disabilities, but this DOES NOT GUARANTEE TRAFFIC RELEASED: it is necessary to inform the hotel / parking lot the license plate in the same way, that is: you NEED authorization anyway, ok ?! Remember that the card used in other countries MAY NOT BE VALID in Europe. Read How is accessibility in Italy for disabled people?

Another possibility is to stay away, in some nearby town, and experience the silence of the wonderful Tuscan landscape, but in this case it is necessary to have a car.
