Experience tourism: the spectacular Fontanafredda Winery

A few weeks ago I took a fantastic trip to the Langhe area, in the Piedmont region, but, first of all, let’s get to know the Langhe area better. When we talk about this area, we are talking about a very special place: it is in this region that the so-called King of Wines, the celebrated Barolo, is produced. The Langhe is a geographic territory of lower Piedmont and is located between two provinces: Cuneo and Asti. In this post I’ll let your know everything about Experience tourism: the spectacular Fontanafredda Winery. Also read: Let’s Visit Barolo And Learn More About Its Wines

The territory, however, is made up of an extensive mountain system that is delimited by the course of the rivers Tànaro, Belbo, Bòrmida di Millesimo and Bòrmida di Spigno, bordering the ‘Astesana, Monferrato and Roero. Our Introduction

So, this post, Experience tourism: the spectacular Fontanafredda Winery, is a very special one! I don’t even need to say that the territory is breathtakingly beautiful, right? The Langhe are rich in cultural history and, of course, enogastronomy. The area is famous for producing some of the most celebrated wines in the world such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto and Barbera d’Alba, not to mention the unique delicacies from there such as the White Alba Truffle and the Tonda Gentile hazelnut, and others.

IMPORTANT TIP
To take this tour I suggest you do not go by car! Hire a private driver or use a transfer, as the tour involves consumption of alcoholic beverages.
If you drink DO NOT drive! Never, under any circumstances, ok?

The Langhe Area

The cities that belong to the list of Barolo producers are: (total territory) Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba; (partial territory) La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Roddi, Verduno, Cherasco, Diano d’Alba, Novello and Grinzane Cavour.

It is worth remembering that the production of Barolo follows a strict specification that provides for the exclusive vinification of Nebbiolo grapes, and it is essential that they are grown within the borders of the territory of the cities mentioned above. This is one of the most important wine producing areas in the world, if not the most important. Also read: Where to sleep on the Piedmont wine route?

The Fontanafredda Winery and its magic!

The Fontanafredda Winery is the most important in the entire region. It is located in Serralunga d’Alba, province of Cuneo, and is of mesmerizing beauty.

The Fontanafredda Winery was founded in 1858 and is closely linked to a famous love story: the story of Vittorio Emanuele II and Rosa Vercellana. Vittorio gave this place as a gift to his beloved, so that she could live far from prying eyes and, here, the so-called “Wine of the King and the King of Wines” began to be produced: the unique, incomparable, splendid: Barolo.

Why is Barolo so special?

But why is this wine so special? Well, the answer could be very simple: because it is perfect, but the answer goes further! Also read: Let’s visit Barolo and learn more about its wines.

The key point that makes this wine a masterpiece is the terroir – and what is terroir? The word terroir has French etymology and comes from “terr”, a French root found in words like terre, which means earth or soil; terrain, which means terrain; and ‘land’, which translates as terrace. His concept for wine production brings a link between factors such as land and the agronomic space where wine production takes place.

The grape for the production of this jewel in the form of a wine is Nebbiolo, which has perfectly found the ideal conditions in the 11 locations in the Langhe where it is produced. In fact, Barolo, is the name of one of these locations, as well as the name of its ‘brothers’: Barbaresco, Soave, and Bardolino.

Some details about Barolo

  • Barolo is a red wine produced with 100% Nebbiolo grapes. The rule says that it must be aged for at least 3 years – of which, at least, 18 months in barrel. With 5 years of aging the wine is considered Barolo Riserva and its “twins” are Nebbiolo Lampia, Michet and Rosé.
  • In the mouth it is elegant and gentle; don’t expect a strong flavor bomb, fruity flavors or an excess of acidity: you will get something with an earthy flavor, with hints of liquorice and coffee notes.
  • Its color is intoxicating to the eyes: it presents itself with a transparent ruby, which gains orange tones over the years.
  • And, last but not least: Barolo’s bouquet is pure poetry! Full of small frutti di boschi like raspberries and currants, cherries, elegant flowers, lacquer, spices, leather, green pepper, anise, nutmeg and licorice, but – above all – earthy aromas like hazelnut, leaves and truffles. It really is a gift to our sense of smell!

I felt really good; the staff was very friendly at all times and was extremely kind to everyone present!

Returning to the Winery itself: the property has 120 hectares of vineyards, produces 2,500,000 bottles of wine a year, and has more than 300 employees (direct and indirect); the winery exports to more than 60 countries worldwide and is, in fact, considered the most important in the entire region.

For the tasting, it is worth remembering that, during the tour, you will have a real lesson on wines, grapes, production and, of course, stories about the Italian royal family.
