GOOD TO KNOW…

Is there a difference between Alps and Dolomites? Yes and no! Calm down, I’ll explain! The Italian Alps  are located in the regions of Veneto, Trentino Alto-Adige and Friuli Venezia Giuliua, in northern Italy, the Dolomites are an integral part of the Alps, that is: they form a mountain range located in the eastern Alps, in northern Italy. The Dolomites extend between the provinces of Belluno, Bolzano, Trento, Udine and Pordenone, and they also border two neighboring countries: Switzerland and Austria.

The Skyway to Monte Bianco and its charms in the heart of Courmayer!

First of all: wear appropriate snow clothing! Wear waterproof clothing and remember to wear sunglasses (if the day is sunny!) – The reflection of the sun on the snow can be disastrous for our eyes and make them very sensitive. Also read our special post The seasons in Italy: how to pack?

But what is the Skyway anyway? The Skyway is actually the name of the cable car that departs from the city of Courmayeur! Yes, dear ones: Courmayer’s iconic Skyway to Monte Bianco is a cable car! The town of Courmayer is located about 1500 meters above sea level, from there the cable car reaches 3500 meters, going from Punta Helbronner and arriving directly at the heart of the Monte Bianco glacier.

It is impossible not to be impressed by the engineering work that stands imposing before our eyes: in perfect integration with nature, the work carried out by the hands of Man marked the history of humanity, since it seemed impossible to build something with such perfection in a place , in a way, so inhospitable and remote. A SPA in the middle of the mountain!

Courmayer’s iconic Skyway to Monte Bianco also has some good tour options! Nearby, still in the town of Courmayer, we find another unmissable attraction: the baths of Pré-Saint-Didier. In this area we find these incredible hot springs.

According to some studies, the springs were already known since the Roman era, around 1600, and between 1834 and 1888 it was very frequented by the Italians themselves, especially by the royal family.

It remained closed for more than 30 years, however it was completely renovated and also gained a complete SPA structure, which makes the experience something unique! The most interesting thing about the place is that, despite the modern restructuring, the architecture of the time, that is, from the 19th century, was preserved, leaving the place with an incredible charm.

An impressive structure!

The structure has 500 square meters spread over three floors and offers excellent treatment options. There you will find swimming pools, bathtubs with water and steam games, waterfalls, Turkish baths, saunas, outdoor pools with panoramic views, and much more! Whirlpools are a favorite with visitors and serve to tone the muscles of the back and shoulders, the back and buttocks, and the abdomen.

There are also dry saunas flavored with essential oils, purifying and regenerating baths, and Orrido hot water falls – which offers a magnificent view of Monte Bianco.

Saussurea Alpine Botanical Garden: interesting, different, and charming!

When we think of botanical gardens, we would never think of a garden in the middle of the highest mountain in Italy… Well, here is the Alpine Botanical Garden of Saussurea!

This garden was born in 1984 on a glacial headland that is part of the Mont Blanc massif, Mont Fréty.

The site was supported by the State Forestry Corps and the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta and is the highest in Europe, as it is located at 2175 meters above sea level. Its name, Saussurea, is the name of an alpine flower, which was named after the Geneva scientist Horace Bénédict de Saussure, the promoter of the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786.

The place is beautiful to live in and is perfect for those traveling with children as well. They LOVE the variety of colors and shapes of flowers and other specimens of flora present there! Definitely worth the visit!

Lunch in the clouds!

How about a special lunch with a breathtaking view? Well, it’s not difficult to find excellent restaurants there with impressive views, but one of them deserves to be highlighted, the delicious Bellevue. With a very special cuisine, it offers typical dishes of the region, and is open for lunch and dinner. Reservation is suggested.

A classic wine made in the heart of the mountain!

After 30 years of experience in the production of sparkling wines using classic methods in the Aosta Valley, La Cave Mont Blanc has been dedicated for 10 years to the production of sparkling wines at high altitudes.

This production is only possible due to a super partnership between Cave Mont Blanc and Courmayeur Guides, who came together to promote this magical territory! Also read: What are the types of Italian wines?

This special wine was born on the 20th of July 2009, it was a bottle of Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle Classic Method Extrabrut “Cuvée des Guides” and was opened and tasted at the top of Monte Bianco, in honor of the mountain and its guides.

Prié Blanc is the only white grape variety native to the Valle d’Aosta and finds its natural interpreter in Cave Mont Blanc, which offers us one of its best versions: sparkling wine made using the Classic Method.

This sparkling wine is special because its grape grows at high altitudes, with a specific atmospheric pressure, low temperatures and other unique processes, which offer us rare and impeccable grapes.

How much does it cost to visit the Monte Bianco complex?

It depends on what you want to know, the places you want to visit and what you want to do in the heights! To have access to all values, access the official website by clicking here!

When is the best time to visit the Monte Bianco complex?

If you are going to visit Monte Bianco for skiing, snow sports, or enjoying the famous “white tourism”, obviously the best time to visit the complex is during winter, between December and March; however, if you prefer milder temperatures and don’t like to ski, for example, you can visit the place with complete peace of mind during spring and summer, that is, between April and August.

Whichever period you choose, it is good to remember that you are heading to one of the highest points in Europe, that is: the lowest temperatures at the top of the mountain are almost constant, even in the hottest months, and it is very windy in the top of the hill, so, as we said, wear appropriate clothing.
