We will explore a part of Italy, with an itinerary that will visit some of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It will be a trip, mostly, by train as a means of transport, mainly in the most important cities. Where appropriate, we will use a rental car. This trip will be made in ten days. If you read my post “How many days do I need to visit the main sights of Italy” you will find out how complicated it is to visit this country in such a short time, but with this post today I am sure it will help you decide what to do 🙂 Find out how to get around in Italy.

Our Itinerary

We will cross Lazio (Rome), Tuscany, Umbria and Veneto. All regions rich in charming villages, stunning scenery and tasty food. Florence, Siena, Assisi and Venice are just some of the destinations visited in this unforgettable tour. Important: The purpose of this tour is to get to know several cities in a superficial way, if you prefer a slower tour I advise you to remove two or three cities from the itinerary. 1) Ten days itinerary in Italy? FIRST DAY – ROME

Arrival in Rome and, after leaving your luggage, you will discover this beautiful city from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the symbol par excellence of Christianity. It is worth stopping and visiting the basilica that offers unique artistic treasures in the world, such as a majestic bronze canopy, 29 meters high, built by Bernini, also there, there is Pietà, by Michelangelo, the tomb of Clement XIII, by Canova and the mosaic La Navicella, by Giotto; then, following Via della Conciliazione, you start with Castel Sant’Angelo (“Castle of the Holy Angel”); in front of the castle, there is a bridge covered by ‘white angels’, which will allow you to cross the Tiber and go to the crowded, as well as admired, Piazza Navona (Navona Square).

And then a Pause

Here, and in nearby streets, you will find a number of ice cream parlors, pizzerias and restaurants, where you can take a break. Then, through a series of narrow streets, we reach Piazza della Rotonda (Rotonda Square) and the Pantheon. Continue your tour to the Trevi Fountain. Even from a distance, you hear the ‘roaring’ of water from the Trevi Fountain, and if you want, in this special place, you can turn your back and toss a coin in the fountain, as suggested by an ancient tradition. The first day is coming to an end, but Rome still has a pleasant surprise. From Piazza di Trevi (Trevi Square), take the street that follows Via due Macelli, to reach the spectacular Piazza Spagna (Spanish Square). At this point, after all this history, art and beauty, we just need a good dinner to satisfy the stomach and then a good night’s sleep. Where to sleep in Rome?

2) Ten days itinerary in Italy? SECOND DAY – ROME

Today we are going to discover “Ancient Rome”. We start from the Colosseum; this monument represents 2,000 years of history and is still the symbol of the city. A few steps from the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine. It is the most famous arch of the Roman triumph and a little further on, we have the Palatine Hill. Continuing on Via dei Fori Imperiali (Imperial Forums Street) you will reach the old Roman Forum, in Piazza di Roma (Rome Square), across the street, then you can see the area of the Imperial Forums. At this point you head towards Piazza Venezia (Venice Square), which is home to a large monument ‘The Vittoriano’, and which often hosts great exhibitions. The panoramic elevators will take you to the top, from where you have a breathtaking view.

Capitoline Hill

The last stage of this part of Rome is the Capitoline Hill, the smallest Roman hill, but also the most famous. The square floor is decorated with the twelve-pointed star of the famous Michelangelo and, in the center of the star, there is a statue of a great horse, which is a faithful copy of the monument to Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The original statue is kept in the Capitoline Museums, which is another tour suggestion. 3) Ten days itinerary in Italy? THIRD DAY – ASSISI

Departure to Assisi with a rental car: Assisi is the destination for visitors from all over the world, at all times of the year. It is almost a must to start the tour in the city, from Saint Francis’ Basilica, built in the 13th century, and consists of two different parts that complement each other: the lower church and the upper church. What to visit in Assisi, after this wonder? Well, you can go to the medieval Piazza del Comune (“Town Square”), where there is the Temple of Minerva, a true jewel of ancient art. Continuing the walk through the streets of the city center, there is the Chiesa Nuova (“New Church”) which, by tradition, is known as the birthplace of Saint Francis. Its exterior is a Baroque facade. After seeing so many beautiful things, you can enjoy a good dinner at a local restaurant and then go to rest. HOW TO GET TO ASSISI?

4) Ten days itinerary in Italy? FOURTH DAY – SIENA AND VAL D´ ORCIA

We leave Assisi to reach Tuscany, by car, passing through the beautiful landscape of Siena and the Val d’Orcia, where we will spend the night in one of the many agrotourisms of the villages in this fascinating area. After having a great breakfast, we took the car to go and admire the charming villages that are located near Siena, precisely in Val D’Orcia. WHAT TO DO IN TUSCANY?

Medieval Villages

This great valley is in the province of Siena and you will be surprised by the various landscapes that characterize it. Here there is an extraordinary nature, with beautiful landscapes and beautiful medieval villages. In the center of this valley runs the river Orcia, where its name comes from. Once in this brilliant valley, in addition to the wonderful flora, you have the opportunity to admire some of the most fantastic medieval villages, such as Castiglione D’Orcia, Abbadia San Salvatore, Radicofani, Montepulciano, Montalcino. This is what I suggest you do on this day: walking through these main cities, where you can enjoy the traditions and specialties of the place, and in the late afternoon we will stop in Montalcino, where you can taste the delicious wine like Brunello di Montalcino, the Rosso D’Orcia, or the Nobile di Montepulciano, accompanied by some local delicacy. 5) Ten days itinerary in Italy? FIFTH DAY – SIENA

After lunch we drive to another beautiful city, Siena. Certainly one of the most fascinating routes in our country. The city maintains its medieval flavor due to its narrow streets and the reddish color of its buildings. Once in Siena, you can reach Piazza del Campo (“Field Square”), where you can admire the Town Hall, the seat of government, and the Torre del Mangia (“Mangia Tower”). This square is known for being the stage, twice a year, of the Palio di Siena, an equestrian, historic competition, during which they challenge the seventeen districts that make up the city. From Piazza del Campo we pass to other attractions such as the Siena Cathedral and its Baptistery, in Romanesque-Gothic style that impresses for its majesty and for its white marble facade with green marble decorations, from Prato. TIPS ON SIENA? For a break between a place and a monument in the city, there are bars and restaurants ready to offer the specialties and dishes typical of Siena. 6) Ten days itinerary in Italy? SIXTH DAY – FLORENCE

Florence, capital of Tuscany, is one of the most visited Italian art cities and, in fact, has several museums, churches and places of entertainment to see and be spoiled for choosing it. You can explore the city by arriving at the train station in Florence, located in the center, just a few steps from the most important monuments. In fact, it gives you immediate access to one of the most beautiful squares in the city, Piazza di Santa Maria Novella (New St Mary Square). Here is located the homonymous church which façade, in white and green marble, was built by Leon Battista Alberti. Where to sleep in Florence when traveling by car?

Continuing along Via dei Calzaiouli, you arrive at the beautiful Piazza della Signoria (“Lordship Square”), the heart of central Tuscany. Famous for the Palazzo Vecchio (“Old Palace”) and the City Hall, Piazza della Signoria also offers visitors the Lanzi Loggia, where there are some statues that are symbols of the city, such as Benvenuto Cellini’s “Perseus”. Now, it’s time to discover the famous Piazza Duomo (Cathedral Square) and the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Saint Mary of the Flower), which overhangs Brunelleschi’s dome and Giotto’s campanile. After a break in one of the famous bars that are in the center, we will stroll through the shops and streets there in the center. It is already night, so we stop to eat in one of the many bars in the region, maybe enjoy Florentine steak, famous all over the world, with a good Chianti wine, and after going to bed. 7) Ten days itinerary in Italy? SEVENTH DAY – FLORENCE

After a good breakfast, we head to the center to visit one of the most important museums in Italy and home to some of the most important works of art in the world, the Uffizi Gallery. Inside the gallery are works by important artists of the caliber of Raphael, Michelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo. Another beautiful monument is the Palazzo Pitti, where you can visit museums full of works of art, such as paintings by Titian and Caravaggio. A few steps from the gallery is Ponte Vecchio (“Old Bridge”). It is the most beautiful bridge in the entire city of Florence and is characterized by ‘gold’, as it is a place with many goldsmith shops. After seeing so many masterpieces, all that’s left is to enjoy an incredible dinner and then enjoy a good night’s sleep.

8)Ten days itinerary in Italy? EIGHTH DAY – VENICE

Depart for splendid Venice. We will spend two days in this fantastic city. The safest means of transportation to reach Venice with ease is by train or plane. Arriving at the Venetian station Santa Lucia, you can take an airboat or a ‘taxi gondola’. What must-see monuments and attractions to visit when in Venice? Certainly the visit to the romantic city must start from St Mark’s Basilica and the famous St Mark’s Square, an undisputed symbol of Venice. Much appreciated are the medieval mosaics that make the Basilica unique; with narration from the Old and New Testaments, these mosaics are an important attraction for tourists from all over the world. Also wonderful is the Doge’s Palace, built in the 9th century, the seat of Serenissima’s power at the time of the maritime republics. Now we will take a break at one of the famous cafes in St Mark’s Square. The walk continues under the Clock Tower, in the ‘Mercerie’. 9) Ten days itinerary in Italy? NINTH DAY – VENICE

After breakfast, you will visit another indisputable symbol of Venice, the Grand Canal, which stretches for four kilometers. The Grand Canal owes its fame to the fascinating historic buildings that tell the story of Venice and the magnificent bridges that dot the lagoon, Ponte di Rialto, Ponte Accademia and Ponte Scalzi, to name just a few. The most popular, however, among these, is the Bridge of Sighs. The enchanting beauties, which make Venice unique, do not end here; there are many, even cultural palaces, that populate Venice and are worth seeing. Among them, remember to visit the Ca ‘Pesaro, the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco (“St Roch Great School”) and Ca ‘Rezzonico, which is the 16th century Venetian Museum. After such splendor, to complete the day, have a big dinner and a good night’s sleep.

10) Ten days itinerary in Italy? TENTH DAY – VERONA

This last day will be in the city of love, Verona, where we will go by train. After breakfast, on the last day of the tour, you will reach the city of Verona, always using the train as a means of transport. Just go to Verona to reach the sights of the city to visit. TIPS ON VERONA?

Verona is an ancient city, in addition to being one of the most resplendent in Italian art, rich in history, culture, architecture and shrouded in Shakespeare myths.
