Introduction

The Cinque Terre are incredible! It is impossible to talk about beautiful places without thinking about Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The Cinque Terre were discovered by tourists and it didn’t take long to win over everyone’s heart! It is a sure destination for the tourist crowd, especially in the summer, so it is not difficult to find crowded cities! However, there are other tour options for those who prefer something more peaceful. It is worth remembering that, in the summer, anything is possible (probably the alternatives are also full!), so a tip: if you prefer to avoid the large crowd, give preference to do the tours early. 1) Alternative tours in Cinque Terre? COOKING CLASS

To start, we can search for the secrets of the gastronomic tradition of the Cinque Terre and take a cooking class with natives. With a cinematic landscape, there is a small place in Nessundorma (Manarola) built on the boardwalk, where you can learn to make traditional pesto with all the most typical ingredients of Liguria: basil, pine nuts and extra virgin olive oil; without leaving aside the Parmigiano! With a pestle and extra strength in your arms, you follow the teacher’s guidance while admiring an AWESOME view! The class lasts, on average, an hour and a half; includes the recipe preparation kit and lunch to prove your creation and, of course, a glass of wine. It costs around 50 euros per person. (Where? Ristorante Nessun Dorma – make a reservation at least three days in advance).

2) Alternative tours in Cinque Terre? FIELD OF OLIVE TREES WITH TASTING

In Santo Stefano di Magra, an hour’s drive from Monterosso, in the middle of the Ligurian olive groves, there is a company that produces DOP extra virgin olive oil. There the process is complete: it begins with the cultivation of olives from the Ligurian Riviera on the ancient terraces that surround it and ends with a delicious tasting. After walking through the olive groves, we will start tasting: with your glass in hand, you will learn all the official techniques for tasting oils and olive oils used by DOP oil tasting commissions. The experience lasts 4 hours and includes tastings of local gastronomic specialties that please the palate. The experience at the oil mill is unique and well worth it! (Where? Lucchi and Guastalli).

3) Alternative tours in Cinque Terre? MAKING FOCACCIA AND CROSSETTI

In Manarola, you literally get your hands dirty! How come? Making focaccia and crosetti! Genoese focaccia is the bread of sailors, as it tastes like the sea: with salt and oil, it has a simple but rigorous finish. The crosetti are medallions of pasta decorated with the coat of arms of noble families from the past and are a gastronomic rarity still kept alive by the few who still live there. There is a baker who opens the doors of his “refuge” to offer tourists a total immersion in traditional cuisine, beside him there is a young chef who teaches us how to make pasta with nut sauce. At the end of the class, the aprons are set aside and the tasting begins: everything delicious! (Where? Piè di Campu.)

4) Alternative tours in Cinque Terre? COUNTRYSIDE TOURS

How about going inland? Among olive trees and vineyards, a walk or a donkey walk will offer you another perspective of Cinque Terre. An alternative hike is along the Cai paths, away from the sea and with special guides: in Lerici, the guide accompanies tourists on a 5-hour hike – with a strategic picnic stop – going on to discover the Monte Marcello National Park. (Where: Lerici)

5) Alternative tours in Cinque Terre? MANAROLA AMPHITEATER

Another incredible tour is that in the natural amphitheater of the Manarola vineyards. Accompanied by a highly experienced sommelier guide, you will have a real lesson while admiring vines and dry stone walls, you will be able to analyze all the characteristics of the vine, the type of pruning, type of grape and its cultivation. After discovering all the secrets of Bacchus, the wine experience continues with the tasting of two wines from the Cinque Terre. To finish in the most valuable way, a sip of Sciacchetrà, a typical wine from the region made from raisins and ultra-limited production with a unique aroma that only this place can offer. (Where? Manarola).

6) Alternative tours in Cinque Terre? CAMOGLI LANDSCAPES

If you want to get away a little and go to another place nearby, choose Camogli. A small town that is an hour from the Cinque Terre. The city is not touristic, it does not even have a hotel, but it is of sublime beauty! Camogli is a city that despite “offering nothing”, offers us everything: peace, tranquility, stunning scenery. The city goes against the “famous cousins” and, even so, makes us feel the true and authentic essence of the Ligurian Riviera.

7) Alternative tours in Cinque Terre? WALK SENTIERO AZZURRO

Finally, how about a walk through the Sentiero Azzurro, from end to end? It is alternative because not everyone crosses it from beginning to end. The walk is not difficult, the panorama is wonderful and you can stop in all cities, since the path passes through many interesting points. You can go on foot or use a bicycle. Don’t be in a hurry, enjoy the scenery, the sunny day and have fun. It will be a renewal for your soul! How about a Sunset Boat Trip in the Cinque Terre? Click here to learn more!
